(oil s1 1-9-) Thisinvention relates broadly to vises'and more specifically to improvements in jaw holders for yoke Vises.
Heretofore in the construction of yoke vises, such as are used for holding pipes, bars and other tubular objects, the adjustable'jaw has usually been secured within the socket or housing member by a bolt or rivet extending through the jaw and socket member. Such an arrangement not only increases the cost of manufacture of the vise, due to additional machining operations, but also tends to weaken the jaw member, thus materially reducing its efiectiveness and efficiency.
One of the objects of the present invention resides in the provision of a yoke vise having a slidable socket member of complementary sections which are secured together for locking the jaw member therein.
Another object of the invention is to provide the socket member with inwardly extending projections for engaging and retaining the jaw member therein.
Another object is to provide a jaw which is a solid member without openings therethrough.
Another object of the invention is to provide a yoke vise which is of simple and rugged construction, economical of manufacture and reliable and efficient in operation.
Other objects and advantages more or less ancillary to the foregoing and the manner in which all the various objects are realized will appear in the following description, which considered in connection with the accompanying drawing, sets forth the preferred embodiment of the invention.
Referring to the drawing wherein the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of the improved yoke vise;
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the yoke vise shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing the socket or housing member with the jaw member disposed therein, the section being taken on a plane indicated by the line 33 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view of a fragmentary portion of the vise showing the jaw member secured within the socket, the view being taken on a plane indicated by line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
As shown in Fig. 1, the yoke vise comprises a base or stationary frame member H having an adjustable clamp means II for securing the vise to a suitable support l2. An upper yoke member I4 is provided with bifurcated end portions and I B which engage a pair of diametrically disposed, upwardly extending" lugs I 1 and I8 formed on the'ba's e member H3. The up er yoke member l4 ispivo'tally secured to the base member H! by a bolt l9' extending through the bifurcated end portion l5 and the lug H. A' hook-2| pivotally mounted upon the upper yoke member l4, super'jacent the bifurcated end portion 16 is adapted for quick detachable engagement with the lug l8 on the base for securing the yoke member to the base member Ill. The bifurcated end portion l6 may be secured to the lug I8 by a pin, not shown, to facilitate the locking of the yoke upon the base member.
A hardened pipe engaging jaw 22 is formed on the base member I0 intermediate the lugs I! and I8 and provides a cradle for the reception of a pipe 23. An upper jaw member 25 having recesses 26 in opposite'ends is mounted within a socket or housing member'formed of a pair of complementary cup sections 2'! and 28. Inwardly extending abutments 29 are formed in the sections 21 and 28 for engaging the recesses 26 to aid in the retention of the jaw member 25 within the socket. The section 21 and 28 of the socket are provided with a pair of aligned laterally extending arms 30 which terminate in angular lips 3| for slidably engaging opposite ways 32 provided by the sides of the yoke member It. The jaw member 25 is securely locked within the cup sections 2'! and 28 by bolts 33 extending through the arms 31! and having nuts threaded on the free ends for drawing the cup sections together.
Formed on the top surface of the cup sections 21 and 28 there are upwardly extending semicylindrical portions 35 having an inwardly projecting flange 36 defining a chamber 31 superjacent the jaw member 25. A screw threaded member 38 having an enlarged head 39 formed on one end extends through the apex of the upper yoke I4 and the enlarged head is positioned within the chamber 31 for engaging the jaw member 25. A suitable bar, not shown, is secured within the outer end of the member 38 to facilitate the movement of the socket or housing within the dpper yoke l4. V
In the use of the improvedyoke vise the base member I0 is secured to a suitable support by the clamp l2 and the upper yoke member M is pivotally mounted upon the lug H. A pipe or other tubular object 23 is then supported upon the jaw 22 subsequent to which the upper yoke I4 is pivoted about the lug I! until the hook 2| engages the lower portion of the lug l8. Upon the engagement of the hook 2| with the lug l8, the screw threaded member 38 is rotated by the bar for moving the socket member upon the ways 32 and the jaw 25 into engagement with the upper surface of the pipe or tubular object to insure the retention of the pipe within the vise stand.
The enlarged head 39 formed on the screw threaded member 38 engages the jaw member 25 for retaining th pipe within the vise. The force or pressure developed by the screw threaded member 38 for securing the pipe in the Vise is applied directly to the jaw member 25 so that the socket member is practically devoid of any stress or strain and thus remains free to move on the ways 32. The only force or pressure that might be imparted to the socket member would be through the abutments 29 engaging the recesses 26 of the jaw member 25.
Although the foregoing description is necessarily of a detailed character, in order that the invention may be completely set forth, it is to be understood that the specific terminology is not intended to be restrictive or confining, and that various rearrangements of parts and modifications of detail may be resorted to provided they come within the scope of the claim. 7
