My invention relates to a combined folding and guiding stitching device and its novelty consists in the adaptation and arrangement of parts as will be more fully hereinafter pointed out.
The folding and feeding of a material and a braid or piping and stitching them together, whether it be a braid or piping on a dress or a glove or similar article, has heretofore required three operations whereas my device eliminates two operations and does the complete work continuously in one operation and with a unitary structure.
Under the prior art it was necessary to first stitch the braid or piping flat to the edge of the fabric on one side and then turn back both the fabric edge and the piping thereover and again stitch it through both the turned fabric edge and turned piping and thereafter trim the edge of the piping with shears by hand.
This method which is still generally used, particularly in connection with gloves as well as with dresses, gives an unsatisfactory finished edge as the hand trimming by shears is always irregular so that the finished article is seldom uniform.
My device is a single unit; adapted to be rigidly mounted on the presser bar of a sewing machine of usual factory type so that it guides the braid or piping through so as to fold each edge back on the piping with the upper edge overlapping tne lower edge and then as the fabric or glove edge is fed into my device it is turned back on itself to make a completed edge and it feeds therethrough on top of the folded piping continuously under the presser foot by means of the usual feed dog of the sewing machine. The braid or piping is fed through my device automatically once it has been started therethrough and the fabric or glove edge is fed into my device by hand and the regular feed dog of the sewing machine feeds this combined piping and turned edge of the fabric in the usual way under the threaded needle so that they are stitched together continuously along the edge of the fabric or glove to its end when another piece of fabric or glove is fed in as described, the feeding of the Referring to the drawing Figure 1 is a perspective looking at the inner side of the head of a sewing machine showing my device, with material therein, rigidly secured to the presser bar of said machine and the rest of the sewing machine being broken away for convenience in illustration.

In the drawing I0 is a stitching table of the usual factory or manufacturing type of sewing machine on which is a head portion ll of usual construction carrying the regular presser bar I! positioned by lever l3 in the usual manner and a feed dog |4 mounted and oscillating in the usual manner in said table I0.
My single piececontinuous folding and guiding device I5 has a slotted portion l6 which is adapted to slide over said presser bar |2 and be rigidly secured thereto by a set screw I1 and the hole IS in said folding and guiding device l5 allows needle I9 of usual construction to pass through and stitch in the usual manner the materials held thereunder in said folding and guiding device l5.
In the folding and guiding device l5 there is at one end a downturned lip 32, an open slot 20, an inturned flange 2| which is turned down on one side and an inturned flange 22 which is turned down on the other side so that said flange 22 as it runs inwardly toward the glove or fabric guiding portion 23 will come to a position where it overlaps the flange 2| and has an underturned guide lip 33 at its outer edge so that as the tape or piping 28 feeds through the edge following the inturned flange 22 and limited by guide lip 33 it will overlap the edge following the inturned flange 2| an exact amount and said overlapped tape or piping 28 will gradually flatten out as it-approaches the glove or fabric guiding element 23. This fabric or glove guiding portion 23 comprises the curved guide or feeding plate 24 which extends at 25 beyond the bracket portion 26 on which said plate 24 is rigidly mounted and a flared circular guide plate 21 runs from said bracket 26 around and over the inner end of said extended plate 25, thereby forming a groove 30 under said extended plate portion 25 whereby the glove or other fabric 29 being fed in by hand by the operator will pass over said plate 24 and the extended end 25 and thrusting against said flare guide 21 will push down under the extended end 25 into said groove 30 thereby turning back on itself as it is fed forward through opening 34 between device l and the feed dog l4. In this way the overlapped piping or tape 28 being fed through my device as described will thereby be met by the folded fabric or glove 29 thus being fed so that said folded glove or fabric portion 29 will lay on top of said overlapped tape or piping 28 and as the feed dog pulls them along together through opening 34 in the usual manner they will pass under'the operating needle l9 which will stitch them together in this described position continuously.
The operation of my device is simple. The folding and guiding mechanism I5 is first mounted on a presser bar of a sewing machine by means of the slotted portion l6 fitting over said presser bar l2 and being held rigidly thereon by means of set screw [1 and the piping 28 which has been previously fed through l5 and out through opening 34 will be held in position for the operating of the sewing machine head It as the lever I3 is pressed down so as to lock said piping 28 under the presser bar 12 and device or foot I5 in the usual manner.
The glove or fabric 29 will be fed by the operatorover the feed plate 24 so that the inner edge of said fabric or glove wlil pass around the extended end 25 of said plate 24 and turn back thereover in groove 30 so that as said folded edge of fabric or glove 29 passes on to the overlapped folded piping 28 under the presser bar 12 and device 15 they will be fed along together unlformly through opening 34 by the oscillation of the feed dog 14, which is set into operation. by the regular operation of the sewing machine head H.
The finished piping 28 mounted on the turned edge of the fabric or glove 29 is shown in Figure 3 stitched together at 3! in their completed condition and the cross section inFigure '4 shows the tion Hi to the particular presser bar on which it is mounted.
I claim:
1. In a single piece device, means for rigidly securing said device to a sewing machine presser bar, means for folding and guiding a tubularly formed overlapped folded edge piping therethrough comprising a downturned lip at the outer end, a tubular opening adjoining said lip and an inturned flange adjoining said tubular opening turned down and under on one side and a second inturned flange on the opposite side from said first flange turned down so that it runs inwardly towards a side guiding portion as it overlaps said first flange in an edge turned back on itself, means for folding and guiding a fabric edge therethrough so that said piping is guided in its folded tubular position under said folded fabric edge comprising a side guiding plate and an undercut groove under the inner end of said plate immediately over said inner tubular end openmg.

In a single piece device, means for rigidly securing said device to a sewing machine presser bar, means for folding and guiding a tubularly formed overlapped folded edge piping there-. through comprising a downturned lip at the outer end, a tubular opening adjoining said lip and an inturned flange adjoining said tubular opening turned down and under on one side and a second inturned flange on the opposite side from said first flange turned down so that it runs inwardly towards a side guiding portion as it overlaps said first flange in an edge turned back on itself, means for folding and guiding a fabric edge therethrough so that said piping is guided in its folded tubular position under said folded fabric edge and fed into said sewing machine and stitched together in said position by said sewing machine feeding and stitching mechanisms comprising a :side guiding plate and an undercut groove under the inner end of said plate immedi-. ately over said inner tubular end opening.
