AT'ITORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEO ALEXANDER K. SUDDOTH AND WILLIAM L. GANFIELD, OF FRIARS POINT, MISSISSIPPI.
ELEVATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,118, dated August 10, 1880.
Application filed June 19, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ALEXANDER K. SUD- DOTH and WILLIAM L. GANFIELD, of Friars Point, in the county of Ooahoma and State of Mississippi, haveinvented a new and Improved Elevator, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple and efficient device for loading wagons, storing goods in warehouses, 860.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device. Fig.2 is an enlarged crosssection of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, A A represent the skids, held together with the cross-bolts B B and their tightening-nuts a a. On the end bolts, B, are fixed the sheaves (J 0, while the windlass D is set on the crank-shaft E, that passes transversely through said skids A A.
F is a ratchet keyed on the crank-shaft E, and F is a pawl engaging therein.
Along the upper edges of the skids A A are secured the metal straps or bands A, on which the carriage M runs, the upper ends of said straps A being slightly curved upward, as shown at I), to prevent the carriage M from running off. On the lower faces of said skids A, and at the upper ends thereof, are the hooks H H, that are designed to hold the upper end of the device firmly on a wagon or in other desired position.
M is a carriage, consisting preferably of a square-barred frame provided with wheels or rollers M M, that rest on the straps A, and provided also with upward-projecting pins or (No model.)
stakes m, to prevent the goods that are loaded on it from slipping from it.
N is the endless rope, passed several times around the Windlass D, and then passed over 40 the sheaves O G, and made fast to the under side of the carriage M, so that on turning said Windlass D, by means of the crankshaft E, the said carriage M is moved up or down, be-
ing checked in its downward movement, how- 5 ever, if desired, by the engagement of the pawl I*" in the ratchet F.
In warehouses, cotton-yards, at hay and cotton presses, and anywhere for moving and elevating bales, &c., this device is mostvaluable.
The carriage M may be made of other shape than that shown in the drawings to accommodate any particular kind of goods.
Having thus fully described our invention, we claim as new and, desire to secure by Letters Patent t 1. In an elevator, the combination, with the skids A A, provided with straps A, having upward-curved end I), of the carriage M, provided with rollers or wheels IV M, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. In an elevator, the barred carriage M, provided with rollers or wheels M M and pins or stakes m m, substantially as herein shown and for the purpose described.
