v This invention relates to a combined drawer pull and label holder adapted for use upon drawers, cabinets and the like constructed of steel.

An object of the invention is to provide an improved conveniently operable and simply constructed drawer pull and label holder adapted to be countersunk in the face of the drawer, or cabinet Another object of the invention is to provide an improved drawer having a front wall formed with an outer sheet-metal member and an inner sheet metal member arranged in spaced relation to the outer member, an opening formed in the outer member, and a member inserted in the space between the outer member and the inner member and surrounding the opening in such a manner as to provide a pull that is disposed entirely within the space between the two front wall members of the drawer.

Another object of the invention is to provide an improved drawer having a front wall formed with an outer sheet metal member and an inner sheet metal member arranged in spaced relation to the outer member and connected thereto by a top wall, an elongated slot formed in the top wall, an opening formed in the outer member below the slot, and means disposed in the space between the outer member and the inner member of the front wall and surrounding the opening in the outer member so as to provide a pocket for retaining an index card or label inserted through the slot in the top wall.

With these and other objects in view which will more fully appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the invention consists in the combination, arrangement and construction of parts hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes may be made in the size and proportion of the several parts and details of construction, without departing from the spirit, or sacrificing any of the advantages, of the invention.

Referring to the drawings, the invention is shown embodied in the construction of the front wall ll of a drawer I2 preferably constructed of sheet metal. However, it is to be understood that the invention is equally as well applicable to other articles, such as trays, cabinets, and the like, where it is desired to provide a pulling means or handle for the device, as well as means for mounting a card or label on the device.

The drawer l2 may be of any construction and may comprise, in addition to the front wall I I, a bottom 53, and side walls it.

The drawer l2 illustrated in the accompanying drawings is of a type adapted to be mounted in a cabinet, a safe, or the like, together with other drawers, either constructed like the drawer shown or otherwise constructed. Such drawers are adapted to hold documents, cards and other papers.

Heretofore, file cabinet drawers and the like, have been so constructed that the drawer pulls and label holders were attached to the front walls of the drawers and projected outwardly therefrom. Usually the drawer pulls extended approximately one and one-half inches beyond the front of the drawers. When these drawers were mounted in safes and cabinets having doors, obviously, in order to permit the doors to be closed, it was necessary to make the overall length of the drawers somewhat less than the depth of the interior of the safes or cabinets so as to allow plenty of space for the drawer pulls.

By the present invention, the drawer pull and the label or index card holder are constructed entirely uithin the front wall of the drawer, and consequently the drawers can be constructed of a greater length than those of the earlier types referred to above.

As shown best in Fig. 5, the front wall I l comprises an outer wall member 15 and an inner wall member It, said inner member being arranged spaced from, and substantially in parallel relatlonship to, the outer member iii.

In order to connect the two members [5 and l6 of the front wall ii together, the front or outer member I is formed around its periphery with a rearwardly extending flange ll.

Along the top of the front wall II, the inner portion of the flange I! is turned downwardly, as indicated at i8, so as to provide a flange that is arranged spaced from, and substantially in parallel relationship to, the outer member l5. However, the flange i3 is disposed in a plane intermediate the planes of the outer member I5 and the inner member iii.

In addition to the flanged portions l1 and i8, the bottom portion of the outer member i5 is also formed with a flange l9 which extends inwardly from the flanged portion l8 so as to provide means for connecting the front wall Ii to the bottom l3, as indicated at 20, Fig. 5.

The inner wall member I6 is formed at the top with a forwardly extending flanged portion 2i.

The outer portion of the flange 2i is bent upwardly so as to provide a flange 22.

The flange 22 is arranged in parallel relationship to the flange l8 and abuts said flange, and may be secured thereto by any convenient means, such as by welding. In order to provide for a smooth finish at the front of the drawer, the flange 22 may be disposed inside of the flange I8.

The outer wall member I5 is formed with an elongated opening 23 which constitutes a part of the drawer pull, and in addition to the opening 23, the member l5 may also be formed with one or more openings 24, which latter openings constitute a part of the label or index card holders, to be hereinafter more fully described.

While in the drawings the openings 23 and 24 are shown of rectangular form, obviously these openings may have any desired configuration.

In order to provide a frame for the opening 23 and also to provide means for rigidly retaining the members i5 and I6 in spaced relation, an angular member 25 is mounted in the front wall II, as shown in Fig. 5.

The member 25 is preferably formed from sheet metal so shaped as to have two portions 26 and 21 arranged substantially at right angles to each other, somewhat in the form of an angle iron.

In order to frame the rectangular opening 23, the member 25 is substantially U-shaped as viewed from the front, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3. The member 25 has an intermediate horizontal portion 28, and substantially vertical end portions 29, the portion 28 being arranged in proximity to the lower edge 30 of the opening 23, and the vertical portions 29 being arranged in proximity to the side edges 3| of said opening (see Figs. 3, 5 and 6).

The flanged portion 26 of the member 25 abuts against the inner face of the outer wall member l5, as shown in Fig. 5 and may be secured to said wall member i5 by any suitable means, such as by welding.

The flanged portion 21 extends from the front or outer wall member i5 rearwardly to the inner wall member i6 and thereby encloses the space between said members as defined by the outline of the opening 23.

The portions 29 of the member 25 extend upwardly into the interior of the front wall II and terminate a suitable distance above the upper edge 32 of the opening 23.

The top flanged portion I1 is formed with an elongated slot or opening 33.

The opening 33 may be disposed directly to the rear of the outer wall member l5, and said opening is arranged in vertical alinement with the opening 24, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and also in Figs. 3 and 4. If so desired, the opening 33 may be slightly longer than the maximum width of the opening 24, so that a label or index card having dimensions larger than the area of said opening may be inserted through the opening 33.

Mounted in the upper portion of the hollow front wall ll of the drawer, is an angular member 34 having a substantially horizontal bottom flange 35 and a substantially vertical flange 36 extending upwardly from the portion 35.

The vertical flanged portion 36 of the member 34 extends from the top ll of the front wall ll downwardly a suitable distance below the bottom of the opening 24, and the horizontal flanged portion 35 extends from the front or outer wall member l5 to the inner wall member IS. The member 34 may be connected to the outer wall member l5 by welding at the point indicated at 3'|,Fig. 5.

As shown in Figs. 3, 5 and 7, a portion of the leg 36 of the member 34 is outstruck, as indicated at 38, so as to provide a wall somewhat larger in area. than the area of the opening 24, and which wall is disposed in spaced relation to the outer wall member l5, thereby to provide a pocket enclosed at the sides and bottom for a label or index card inserted through the slot 33. The portion 38 is disposed in the space between the outer wall member l5 and the flange 22 and directly to the rear of the slot 33.

Beneath the flanged portion 35 of the member 34, the outer wall member l5 constitutes a depending lip, indicated at lip 39, Fig. 5, which lip affords a grip for the finger or fingers of the operator inserted in the opening 23.

In order to enhance the beauty of the device and also in order to reinforce the lip 39, a finishing strip 40 is provided.

The finishing strip 40 may be formed of suitable metal such as aluminum, brass, bronze, or the like, and comprises an inner flange 4i which abuts the flange 35 of the member 34 and is secured thereto by rivets, as indicated at 42, Fig. 5.

From the flange 4|, the member 49 has a flange 43 which extends downwardly behind the lip 33 and this flange 43 terminates in a flange 44 which extends around the upper edge 32 of the opening 23 and terminates a suitable distance above the edge 32.

It will be understood that the member 40 cooperates with the member 25 to form a pocket within the hollow front wall II, which pocket is entirely enclosed except for the opening 23 in the outer wall member l5.

It will be also understood that since the label holder, as well as the drawer pull, are both located entirely within the hollow space between the outer member l5 and the inner member ii of the front wall ii, the improved construction provides a novel, simple, neat, cheap andeasily constructed grip or handhold, together with a label or index card holder, so arranged as to present a pleasing appearance, and at the same time, provide very effective means for the purposes above set forth.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:

1. YA drawer comprising a front wall having an outer member formed from sheet material and an inner member formed from sheet material and arranged in spaced relation to said outer member, a rectangular opening formed in said outer member, and an angular sheet metal member arranged within the space between said inner and said outer members, said angular member being substantially U-shape in form and having flanges disposed substantially at right angles to each other, one flange of said angular member abutting the inner face of said outer member and extending around three sides of said opening, and the other flange of said angular member extending across the space between the outer wall member and the inner wall member and having its inner edges abutting the face of said inner wall member.

2. A drawer comprising a wall having an outer member formed from sheet material and an inner member formed from sheet material and arranged in spaced relation to said outer member, a substantially rectangular opening formed in said outer member, an angular member arranged within the space between said inner and said outer members, said angular member being substantially U-shape in form and having flanges disposed substantially at right angles to each other, one flange "of said angular member abutting the inner face of said outer member and extending around three sides including the lower horizontal side of said opening, and the other flange of said angular member extending across the space between the outer wall member and the inner wall member and having its inner edges abutting the face of said inner wall member, said angular member having a base portion lying in substantially the same plane as the lower horizontal side of said opening, said angular member having vertically dis'posed legs at each side thereof extending from its base portion upwardly along the sides of said opening and terminating at a point above the upper horizontal edge of said opening, and a finishing strip having a horizontal wall extending across the space between said outer member and said inner member, a vertical wall abutting the inner face of said outer member and a flanged portion bent around the upper horizontal edge of said opening.

3. A drawer comprising a wall having an outer member and an inner member, said inner member being arranged in spaced relation to and substantially parallel with said outer member, a rectangular opening formed in said outer wall member, a flanged member arranged in the space between both of said wall members and having a flange bearing against said outer member and a second flange extending from said outer member across the space between said members to said inner member, said opening having a periphery comprising upper and lower horizontal edges and vertical side edges, the flanged member being substantially U-shaped in form and having a lower base portion disposed adjacent to the lower horizontal edge of said opening and substantially vertical legs at each side disposed adjacent the vertical side edges of said opening, said flanged member being open at the top, a second flanged member arranged in the space between the two wall members and having a flange disposed in a horizontal plane above the upper horizontal edge of said opening and extending across the space between said wail members and also across the open top of said first flanged member, the portion of the outer wall member below said second flanged member and above the upper horizontal edge of said opening constituting a lip at the front of the drawer that affordsa grip for the fingers of the operator inserted in the opening, and a finishing strip having a flange arranged in juxtaposition to the v flange of said second flanged member and secured thereto, said finishing strip also having a wall abutting the inner face of said outer member and a flange bent around the upper horizontal edge of said opening.
