Another object of the present invention is to provide an improved device of the foregoing character which afiords two latching positions for the door to which the device is applied.
Another object of the present invention is to provide an improved device of the foregoing character including a rollback and one in which the rollback is mounted upon an axis extending transversely of the door and in which the latch bolt is mounted upon an axis extending longitudinally of the door.
A further object of the present invention is to provide an improved latch bolt structure having a case or mounting plate provided with a flange at one'of its edges for supporting the latch bolt in transverse relation with respect to the door' upon which the structure is mounted.
A further object of the present invention is to provide an improved latch bolt structure or device in which the latch bolt thereof is of suflicient strength and size so as to provide positive though releasable latching means for maintaining the door in closed position against rattling.
A further object of the present invention is to provide an improved latch bolt structure in which the latch bolt is mounted upon the inner face of the flanged portion of the mounting or case plate, and in which portions of the latch bolt are disposed on opposite sides of said flange.
Another object of the present invention is to provide an improved latch bolt device in which the latch bolt per se extends transversely of the door to which the device is applied and in which the latch bolt is provided with spaced portions locatedwon opposite sides of the flanged member of the mounting or case plate for the device.
Another object of the present invention is to provide an improved latch bolt structure of the foregoing character in which the latch bolt extends transversely of the door and in which the latch bolt is so constructed and proportioned as to provide a plurality of latching portions permitting the door to be releasably held in partially or fully latched and closed positions.
A further object of the present invention is to provide an improved latch bolt structure of the foregoing character in which the latch bolt is provided with spaced means for latching the door in preliminary closed or safety position and for latching the door in fully closed position.
A further object of the present invention is to provide an improved latch bolt structure of the foregoing character in which the latch bolt extends transversely of the door and is capable of being actuated by a handle member disposed on the exterior side of the door and by a-remote control device disposed upon the interior of said 1 door.
Another object of the present invention is to provide an improved latch bolt device having an actuator or rollback in which the latch bolt and the rollback are provided with separate and independent tensioning means for normally maintaining the latchbolt in projected or latching position.
A further object of the present invention is to provide an improved latch bolt device of the foregoing character which includes a rollback or actuating device for the latch bolt, in which the latch bolt and rollback are disposed in angular relation to one-another and in which said rollback or actuating device is provided with means cooperable with a remote control device for actuating the latch bolt or for preventing its unauthorized actuation.
The above and other objects and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description and appended claims when considered in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts in the several views.

Referring now particularly to the drawings, A represents as a whole a portion of a motor vehicle body of the enclosed type provided with a rear door B and a front door C. As shown in Fig. 1, the rear door is of the type which is hinged at its forward edge to a pillar or post of the body which is located between the front and rear doors.
The latch or look bolt mechanism embodying the present invention is indicated as a whole at D and, as shown, is incorporated with the rear door 13. The latch or look bolt mechanism D is adapted to be operated or actuated from outside the door by means of the usual handle E and is also operated from the interior or inner side of the door B by means of a remote control device, shown as a whole at F.
It will be understood that the front door C of the body, illustrated in Fig. 1, may be provided with a key actuated or locked latch or look bolt mechanism, shown as a whole at G,
their front edges, it will be understood that the latch bolt mechanism is equally well adapted for use upon doors which are hinged at their opposite or rear edges.
Referring now particularly to Figs. 3, 4, 5 and 6 of the drawings, the latch or lock bolt mechanism D, as shown, comprises a suitable upright mounting or case plate III having an end flange II which extends at substantially a right angle to the main portion of the case plate. The flange -i I, as shown, is provided with a pair of spaced apertured embossments I2 on its inner face and the main portion of the case plate III with one or'more apertured embossments I3, one such embossment being shown in the drawings.
A latch .or look bolt actuator or rollback device, shown as a whole at Il, is mounted upon the inner face of the case plate I0 and is provided adjacent its lower end portion with a round or circular rearward projection or embossment Ila which is adapted to be journalled in a similarly shaped 'hole or opening in the case plate so that the actuator or rollback may be moved from its full line position, shown in Fig. 6, to its broken line position shown in that figure. The embossment Ila is provided with a square opening or socket formed therein. As shown, the actuator or rollback ll is preferably of substantially triangular shape or formation and is provided adjacent the embossment Ila with a rounded or curved corner portion Ilb, see particularly Fig. 6. The left or normally vertical edge of the actuator is preferably straight, as shown at It and the lower or bottomedge, namely the heel portion II of the actuator is substantially flat and straight and extends in substantially a horizontal plane when. the actuator is in the position of Fig. 3. The actuator or rollback extends upwardly and outwardly from the heel portion I0, to provide a straight under edge I i which is adapted to be engaged by a preferably flat tension spring or the like to be described hereinafter. The upper portion of the actuator or rollback I l is provided with a horizontal slot or notch II which extends inwardly from the right hand edge of the actuator, as shown in Figs. 3 and 6. The slot I1 provides means for receiving a projecting portion or member formed on the remote control latch operating mechanismand the overlying portion I 8 of the actuator or rollback serves as a stop which also is adapted tocooperate with the remote control device as will be seen hereinafter. I
Referring now particularly to Figs. 3, 4 and 5, the actuator or rollback Il is adapted to cooperate with and actuate a latch bolt shown as a whole at 20 in these figures. As shown, the latch bolt 20 is provided with a relatively thin inner body portion 23 and a somewhat thicker and heavier outer body portion 24, which portions, as shown, are interconnected at their lower ends by a web portion 25. While the members or portions 2!, 2l and 25 are shown as being formed as one integral piece, it will be understood that the parts 23 and 2l may be formed as separate pieces and held together in spaced relation in any suitable manner. The body portions 23 and 24 of the bolt are separated or divided by a slot 26 and, as best seen in Fig. 3,
' when the bolt 20 is mounted upon the flange II of the case plate, the body portion 23 of the latch bolt is disposed at the inner side of the flange and the body portion 2l thereof at the outer side or face of said flange, the slot 26 in the bolt permitting the bolt to have an oscillating movement relative to said flange. The web portion 25 provides a stopto limit the downward movement of the bolt.
' The body portion 23 of the lock bolt is provided with a hole or opening 2| and with a smaller hole or recess 22. The inner end of the body portion 23 has a lateral extension or oifset portion 23a which, as seen in Fig. 3, underlies the flat surface or heel portion I! of the actuator or rollback and is in contact therewith when the parts are in the positions in which they are shown in this figure. The oscillatable lock belt 20 is mounted upon the flange II by means of a pivot pin or stud 30 whose outer end is preferably upset against the outer face of the flange to hold the pin in position. The pin or stud 30 is surrounded by a tension spring having a leg portion 3| provided with an oil'se't end 32 which is adapted to flt in the openingor recess 22 formed in the portion 23 of the bolt and with another leg portion 33 which is adapted to engage a bracket face of the flange and a substantially right angu-.
larly projecting body portion, 36 which extends in a plane substantially parallel to the plane of 'theactuator or rollback I4. The portion 35 of the bracket is provided with a round holeor opening 31 which registers with a square hole or opening formed in the embossment I4a ofthe rollback to receive the squareshank 9 of the handle E. As clearly seen' in Fig. 3, the leg portion 33 of the tension spring is held in contact with the portion 36 of the bracket and thus the spring serves to maintain the latch bolt 20 in the down position as shown in Fig. 3. i
It will be understood that by turning the handle E of the rear door B, the actuator or rollback I 4 will be oscillated in a clockwise direction about its embossment or pivot portion Ma and when so oscillated, the heel portion I9 thereof will move the projection 23 of the lock bolt 20 in a downward direction and thus elevate the lock bolt.
The actuator or rollback I4 is normally maintained in its full line position as shown in Figs. 3 and 6 by means of a fiat tension spring I40. As shown, one end of this spring is held by a substantially U-shaped clip or support I carried by the plate III. The spring is coiled and extends upwardly toward the rollback I4 'with its upper or free end I42 having a pressure contact with the edge I5 of said rollback. The

spring is of suflicient strength to maintain the r rollback normally in its upright position, yet permitting it to be operated by the outside door handle or the remote control device to release the latch member from looking position.
Referring now particularly to Figs. 3, 4 and 5 of the drawings, the latch, bolt 20 provided with a slightly curved outer or forward face portion 28. The under surface or face of the latch bolt 20 is of stepped formation and is provided with an angularly disposed abutment or stop 21. These portions or surfaces 21 and 28 are adapted to cooperate with a striker. member or the like shown as a whole at 43 in Fig. 4. This striker member is, as shown, of substantially oblong shape and has an upwardly projecting nose portion M which is located at the forward or outer end of the striker member. It will be seen that the top faces or surfaces of the projection M are inclined or angularly disposed as shown at 42 and 43. ,The striker member is attached to the rear door jamb or body member by 'means of bolts, cap screws or the like 44.
It will be understood that the latch bolt 20 and associated mechanism are, as stated above, mounted upon the rear door B of the body and move with said door, whereas the striker member 40 is fixed to the rear door jamb 45. As the door is swung inwardly toward closed position, the under surface or face 20a of the latch bolt 20 will engage the inclined top surface 42 of the striker member and ride thereover, the latch bolt swinging or pivoting about its supporting pin 30. As the door is moved further inwardly, the abutment or stop portion 21 of the latch bolt will ride over the apex or top edge of the projection 4| and drop into place against the inclined surface 43, as seen in broken lines in Fig. 4. This position of the parts represents the fully closed It will be understood that the spring 3|, 32, 33 is of sufli-, cient strength to maintain the latch bolt 20 in its various positions with relation to the striker member 40 to prevent the possibility .of accidental shifting of the parts. This spring likewise serves to maintain the parts in releasably locked condition and thus eliminates rattles or other noises. When the door is fully closed, with .the parts in their full line positions of Fig. 4,
the outside door handleE maybe actuated to shift the actuator or rollback I4 in a clockwise direction to depress the offset 23a and elevate the latch bolt 20 so as to release the latch from engagement with the striker member 40, thus permitting the door to be moved toward open position.
The latch bolt mechanism may also be actuated from the interior of the vehicle by means of a remote control device, shown as a whole at F, Fig. 8. As shown, the remote control device com.- prises a mounting plate having attached thereto a strap-like member 5| which provides, with the plate50, a housing or cage for a cam mem-' ber or actuator 52. This cam member 52 is rigidly mounted upon a short shaft or stud 53 which finds a bearing in the strap member 5| and which extends through and is journalled in an opening formed in the plate 50.- The inner end of the shaft 53 projectsbeyond the inner face of door B and is of preferably squared section to receive and support a conventional actuating handle M. The cam member 52 is provided with a notch or recess 54 with which a hump or, bend 55a of a preferably band-like tension spring 55 engages when the member 52 is in its substantially vertical position as shown. This tension spring 55 is attached adjacent one end to the member 5| and is so formed and shaped as to maintain its hump portion 55a in constant contact with the adjacent When the parts are in the position of Fig. 8, it will be noted that the spring is in engagement with the recess or notch 54 in the cam member 52 for the purpose of maintaining said cam member in its upright or vertical position. When, however, the
. cam member 52 is shifted to the left of Fig. 8, the
hump 55a enters a second notch 54a in the cam to hold said cam in an angular tilted position toward the left, which position is not shown. When in this latter position a lug or projection 52a engages the member 5| to prevent further tilting movement of the cam.
The cam member 52 is provided with an upward extension 56 which carries a stud having a fixed substantially rectangular head portion 51. This stud projects from the outer or rear face of the member 56.
The actuator or rollback I4, see particularly Figs. 3 and 6, is provided with a similarly formed and shaped stud and head portion 58 which projects from the inner face of said rollback. As seen in Fig. 1, the remote control device F is mounted upon the inner face of the door B at a point in advance of the lock or latch mechanism.
The remote control mechanism includes a connecting link or member shown as a whole at 60. As shown, the forward end of the link 60 is procam projecting portion 56, it will be seen that the lug 62 engages the adjacent edge of said upward extension 56. The rear or opposite end of the link 60 is provided with an elongate longitudinally extending 'slot 63, see particularly Fig. 3. This end portion of the link member 60 is provided with a lug 64 which is located at a point adjacent the forward end of the slot 63. As shown, this laterally extending lug is formed'by slitting the metal of the link and bending it inwardly at a substantial right angle to the body of said link. When the rear end of the link 60 is assembled with the headed lug or projection 58 of the actuator or rollback it, it will be seen that the lug 64 is positioned in substantially horizontal alignment with the slot l1 formed in the rollback it. Thus, when the handle of the remote control device is shifted in one direction, namely in a clockwise direction with relation to the inner face of door B, the cam member 52, 56 is rotated about its pivot 53 to shift the link rearwardly in the direction of the latch bolt mechanism. When the link is so shifted, the lug or projection 64 carried thereby enters the slot l1 and thus locks the bolt against actuation by means ofthe outside door handle E. It will be understood that when the lug 64 moves into position within the slot II, the overlying portion is of the rollback will engage said lug and thus the lug serves as a stop to prevent the clockwise movement or oscillation of said rollback.
When it is desired to release the locking mechanism from within the vehicle, the remote control handle is shifted in the reverse or counterclockwise direction to shift the link 60 forwardly toward the front of the body and thus remove the lug 64 from its position within the slot I]. With the parts so released, the outside door handle may be actuated to shift the rollback in a clockwise direction and release the latch bolt 20 from engagement with the striker member 40, allowing the door B to be opened. It will be understood further that the latch mechanism may be released and operated independently of the outside handleE by the continued movement of the inside remote control handle M in a counterclockwise direction to shift the link 60 in a forward direction and thus move the rollback it about its pivot to release the lock bolt 20 from engagement with the striker. Therefore, it will be seen that the latch bolt mechanism of the present invention may be operated by means of the exterior handle E and also by means of the remote control handle M located on the inner face of the door B. Moreover, the remote control device provides locking means to prevent unauthorized actuation of the latch bolt from the exterior of the body. While not shown in the drawings, a. key actuated device may be associated with the latch bolt mechanism herein disclosed.
I claim: 4
1. In a latch assembly adapted to be mounted on a swinging door, a. mounting plate having an angularly disposed flange. located at an edge thereof, a latch bolt mounted upon said flange for oscillatable movement relative thereto, tension means for maintaining the bolt normally in latching position, a. rollback for actuating the bolt to retract the same, an operating handle for said rollback, and a pivotpin for said latch bolt secured to said mounting plate flange, said latch bolt having portions thereof disposed on opposite I sides of said flangathe inner portion only mounted on said pin.
'2. In a door latch assembly, a mounting plate having an angularly disposed flange located at an upright edge thereof, a latch bolt mounted upon said flange for oscillatable movement relative thereto, tension means for maintaining the bolt normally in latching position, a rollback for actuating the bolt to retract the same, said bolt being slotted and having a portion disposed at one side of said flange and another portion disposed at the opposite side of the flange, and a pivot pin for said bolt secured to said flange and to the inner portion only of said bolt.
3. In a door latch assembly, a mounting plate having a base portion and an angularly disposed flange located at an upright edge thereof, a bifurcated latch bolt mounted upon said flange for oscillatable movement relative thereto, tension means for maintaining the bolt normally in latching position, a rollback mounted upon said base portion adjacent said flange for actuating the bolt to retract the same, said bolt having portions thereof disposed on opposite sides of said flange and one of said portions being adapted to engage a striker, and a pivot pin for said bolt carried by said flange and secured to only one of said bolt portions.
4. In the door latch assembly, a mounting plate having a base portion and an angularly disposed flange located at an upright edge thereof, a latch bolt, a pivot for said bolt mounted upon said flange to permit oscillatable movement of the bolt relative to the flange, tension means for said portions only being secured to the pivot,
and means for operating said rollback.
5. In a door latch assembly, a mounting plate having an angularly disposed flange located at in latching position, a rollback for actuating the bolt to retract the same, a pivot pin for said latch bolt projecting from the inner face of said flange and fixed to the flange, said latch bolt being mounted upon said pin and having spaced 4 portions thereof disposed on opposite sides of said flange, a bridge piece interconnecting said spaced portions, and an operating handle for said rollback.
6. In a latch assembly for a swinging vehicle door, a mounting plate having a base portion and an angularly disposed flange located at the forward upright edge thereof, said plate being adapted to be mounted upon said door adjacent the swinging edge of the door, a latch bolt mounted upon said flange for oscillatable movement relative thereto, tension means for maintaining the bolt normally in downward projected position, a rollback oscillatably mounted upontbe base portion of the mounting plate, means for maintaining said rollback in position upon said base portion, said bolt having an inwardly projecting portion in engagement with said rollback, said bolt also being slottedwhereby spaced portions thereof are disposed on opposite sides of said flange. pivot means for the bolt secured to the inner of said spaced portions only, and an operating handle for shifting said rollback whereby to move said bolt to released position.
'7. In a latching mechanism, the combination of a case plate having a flange formed along one edge thereof, a latch bolt mounted for oscillatable movement upon said flange, a rollback mounted upon said case plate for operating said latch bolt, said latch bolt being in the form of a bifurcated member having spaced portions disposed on opposite sides of said flange and having an offset portion in engagement with said rollback, means interconnecting the spaced portions of said latch bolt and providing a stop to prevent the movement of said bolt beyond a predetermined point toward latching position, and a handle shaft associated with said rollback for oscillating the same whereby to move said bolt into released position.
8. In a latching mechanism adapted to be mounted upon a swinging door, the combination of a case plate of substantially L-shaped cross section having a base portion and an outwardly projecting flange located at one edge of the base portion, an oscillatable bifurcated latch bolt mounted upon the inner face of said flange and having spaced portions disposed on opposite sides of the flange, means interconnecting the spaced portions of said bolt and providing a stop engageable with said flange for limiting the movement of said bolt toward its projected position, a bolt actuating member oscillatably mounted upon the base portion of said case plate and having a portion engaging a portion of said latch bolt, means for maintaining said bolt actuating member in position upon said base portion, tension means for maintaining said bolt normally in projected position, and means engaging said bolt actuating member whereby to actuate the same and move said bolt into retracted position.
9. In a door latch, a mounting plate having an angularly disposed flange projecting from an edge thereof, a latch bolt slotted to receive said flange and provide a striker engaging portion at the outer side of the flange and a supporting portion at the inner side, a pivot pin secured to the flange and providing a mounting for said supporting portion independently of the striker engaging portion, and means for oscillating the bolt.
10. In a door latch, a mounting plate having an angularly disposed flange projecting from an edge thereof, a latch bolt-slotted to receive said flange and provide a striker engaging portion at the outer side of the flange and a supporting portion at the inner side, a pivot pin secured to the flange and providing a mounting for said supporting portion independently of the striker engaging portion, and means for oscillating the bolt, said bolt portions being connected by a web at the bottom edges only of said portions.
11. In a door latch, a case plate, a latch bolt slotted to embrace an edge of said plate and providing a striker engaging portion at the outer side of the plate and a supporting portion at the inner face thereof, a pivot pin carried by the plate and secured to said last named portion to permit oscillatable movement of the bolt, said striker engaging portion of the bolt being supported entirely through said supporting portion.
12. In a door latch, a case plate, a latch bolt slotted to embrace an edge of said plate and providing a striker engaging portion at the outer side of the plate and a supporting portion at the inner face thereof, a pivot pin carried by the plate and secured to said last named portion to permit oscillatable movement of the bolt, and a member connecting the lower edges of said portions and providing the sole connection therebetween.
