8 Claims. ol. 248-153) The present invention relates to improvements in supports and has reference more particularly to a garbage can holder.

One of the important objects of the invention is to provide a garbage can holder which may be removably anchored in the ground and which embodies means for supporting the garbage can off of the ground to prevent rust and deterioration of the lower portion of the garbage can, such in the. provision of a garbage'can holder that can be readily and easily adjusted to accommodate garbage-cans of different sizes.

"Another objectof the invention is to provide a garbage can holder that comprises a pair of complementary members, each of which includes a pair of leg members, connected together at their upper endsby' a canencircling portion, the intermediate portions of said legs being offset laterally-to form supporting means for engagement with the bottom of the garbage can, and

the lower portions of the leg members terminating in ground penetrating portions.

A further object resides in the provision of a garbage can holder of the above mentioned character that can be readily and easily inserted "intoand removed from the ground, the can supporting portions forming handles whereby the device can begrasped for thrusting the pointed ends of the legmembers into the ground.

Still a further object is to provide'a garbage can holder of the above mentioned character which, due to its simplicity, can be manufactured and sold at a very low cost and will, at all times,

The positive and efficient in carrying out the purposes for which the device has been designed. Other objects and advantageswill become apparent from the following description when taken .in connection with the accompanying drawing.

With reference to Figures 1 to 3, inclusive, of the drawing, the numerals I and 2 designate a pair of complementary members, whichareof identical construction, so that the description of one will suffice for the descriptionof both.

Each of these members is formed of a single strand of thick wire or a thin metal rod of suitable gauge of such length that itmay be bent to form an inverted 'U-shaped member.

: The intermediate portions of the legs sand 4 are bent to form. laterally disposed shoulders B and 1, respectively. These shoulders are also disposed outwardly in the same direction as the crown portion 5. The shoulders are further disposedhorizontally at substantially right angles to the leg portions. .1

The lower extremities of thesev portions 8 ands are preferably pointed to facilitate easy insertion of such portions into the ground.

It will be noted that the ground penetrating portions. of the complementary members are located in a plane in close proximityto thevertical plane of the respective crown portions and also these ground penetratingportions are .dis-

As hereintofore men tioned, the complementaryimembers are disposed in opposed relation to one another and are spaced from another to snugly engage the sides of a garbage can A.

The pointed lower ends of the legs are driven into the ground so that the shoulders 6 and 1 will be disposed slightly above the surface. After the members have been properly anchored,

the garbage can can be readily and easily in-' serted into the holder with the bottom of the garbage can resting on the four horizontally disposed shoulders and the arcuate crown portions 5 will encircle the sides of the garbage can as clearly illustrated in Figure 1.

By thus supporting the garbage can, the bottom thereof will be maintained in an elevated position from the ground thereby permitting the free circulation of air beneath the bottom of the garbage can and further by keeping the bottom of the can ofi of the ground, the same will be prevented from rusting.

The holder will support .the garbage can firmly and will protect the same from being tipped over or otherwise displaced by prowling cats and dogs.

For the purpose of retaining. the cover B of the garbage can in place and from being lifted by dogs, cats or other animals, I provide a securing chain ID that is disposed through the looped handle C of the garbage can cover. One end of the chain is attached to the leg 3 of the member 2, while the other end of the chain is fastened to the upper portion of the leg 4 of the complementary member I. A hook I I may be associated with one end of the chain to facilitate disengagement with the can supporting members in order to remove the cover wherever necessary or any other suitable arrangement may be provided for accomplishing this purpose.

In lieu of a chain It], a coil spring [2 such as is shown in Figure 3 may be employed and the ends of the coil spring may be connected to the diagonally opposed legs of thecomplementary members I and 2 by having their extremities terminating in hooks l3.

Thus, the bottom of the garbage can will rest on the four points I8 and be supported in an elevated position off of the ground. By having 13515 the shoulders IS in this manner, the legs are braced and the garbage can held rigidly within the holder.

It will thus be seen from the foregoing de-' scription that I have provided a garbage can g holder that is not only strong and durable, but

due to its simplicity, the same can be readily and easily assembled and disassembled as well as adjusted to accommodate garbage cans' of various sizes and will be very inexpensive.

While I have shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that various changes in size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention and the scopev of the appended claims.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is: I

1. In a garbage can holder, a pair of opposed complementarv members, each including, a pair of legs, a can encircling portion connecting the upper ends of the pair of legs, means carried by the intermediate portions of the legs for engagement with the bottom of the garbage can for supporting the latter, andground engaging means associated with the lower ends of the legs.

2. In a garbage can holder, a pair of opposed complementary members, each including a pair of legs, a can encircling portion connecting the I upper ends of the pair of legs, means carried by the intermediate portions of the legs for engagement with the bottom of the garbage can for supporting the latter, and ground penetrating means extending downwardly from said can bottom engaging means for anchoring the holder.

3. In a garbage can holder, a pair of opposed of wire .bent into a substantially inverted U- shaped structure, and including a pair ofparallel legs interconnected at their upper ends by an outwardly and horizontally disposed canencircling crown portion, the lower ends of the legs terminating in ground penetrating portions, the intermediate portions of the legsbeingconstructed to engage and'support the bottom of the garbage can spaced from the ground;

In a garbage can holder, a pair'of opposed complementary members, each formed of apiece of wire bent into a substantially inverted U shaped structure, and including a pair of parallel legs interconnected at their upper ends by anoutwardly and horizontally disposed can c oir--- cling crown portion,-the lower-ends-of :the legs terminating in ground penetrating portions, the intermediate portion of eachleg being disposed outwardly toeform an offsetv can engaging ,and supporting shoulder, said shoulders being, disposed horizontally.

6. 8. In a garbage can holder, a pair of opposed complementary members, each formed of a piece of wire bent into a substantially inverted U- shaped structure and including a pair of parallel legs interconnected at their upper ends by an outwardly and horizontally disposed can encircling crown portion, the lower portions of the legs terminating in outwardly extending horizontal 10 shoulders adapted to engage and support the bottom of the garbage can, the outer ends of the shoulders terminating in ground penetrating portions for anchoring the holder, said ground penetrating portions being disposed in a plane parallel to the plane of the legs, and flexible means extending between the diagonal portions of the complementary members for holding the cover of the garbage can in a closed position.
