Inventor F714 00/3 F /o/ve// zr Afton/e Dec. 1942- F. F. FLORS-HEIM 2,304,159 I COMBINATION OPENER Filed April 30, 1941 2 Sheets-Sheet Inventor A Home Patented Dec. 8, 1942 UNITED STT 2 Claims.
My invention relates to improvements in combination kitchen utensils and more particularly to combination openers.
The invention is designed with the principal object in view of providing an inexpensive, easily handled and applied opener adapted for opening all jars, bottles, cans and the like, quickly and easily and without breaking jars having glass or other tops.
Other and subordinate objects are also comprehended by my invention, all of which, together with the precise nature of my improvements, will be readily understood when the succeeding description and claims are read with reference to the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification.
In said drawings:
Figure l is a view in side elevation illustrating my improved opener applied to the cap of a Mason jar.
Figure 2 is a view in bottom plan of the opener.
Figure 3 is a View in transverse section taken on the line 3--3 of Figure 1 and drawn to an enlarged scale.
Figure 4 is a view in side elevation of the shank of the opener, drawn to an enlarged scale.
Figure 5 is a view in transverse section taken on the line 55 of Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a view in perspective of the slidable jaw member.
Reference being had to the drawings by numerals, in the illustrated embodiment thereof, my improved opener comprises, as its basic structure, an elongated, square sided, corner threaded,
straight shank I, a handle 2 extending from the rear end thereof in alignment therewith, a fixed right angularly extending clamping jaw 3 secured, as presently described to the other end of the shank, a movable clamping jaw 4 slidable on the shank l into and from clamping relation to the fixed jaw and a wing nut 5 backing the slidable jaw 4 for turning on the shank against said jaw 4 to force the same into clamping relation.
The handle 2 is preferably loop shaped with a lateral, bulging butt end '6 and front ends 1 straddling the rear end of the shank l and riveted thereto, as at 8. A corkscrew 9 is pivotally mounted at one end on one of the rivets B and in a slot Ill in the rear end of the shank l to swing into and out of the handle 2.
The fixed jaw 3 is provided with a transversely serrated, inner straight face, as at l l, and is preferabl formed as an integral part of a combination can and crown cap bottle opening unit l5 which is provided with a rear fiat shank l6 riveted, as at ll, in a longitudinally extending slot 5 8 provided in the front end of the shank l; The unit l5 embodies the usual can opener blade l9 and fulcrum member 28, a crown cap opener tongue 2i and related fulcrum finger 22 all extending forwardly of the fixed jaw 3 and disposed together with said jaw 3 and the shank l in a common plane.
The movable jaw 4 has the form of an oblong, rectangular plate provided with a square opening 23 therein, adjacent one end thereof through which the shank l is slidably extended, said plate depending from the shank l on the same side as the fixed jaw 3 and having a front face opposed to the face I! of jaw 3 and longitudinally serrated, as at 24, at right angles to the serrations of the jaw 3.
The wing nut 5 is of the usual construction.
In using the described utensil to open jars, the shank l is placed across the top of the cap 25 of a jar 26 diametrically, and said cap clamped between the jaws 3, 4 by moving the movable jaw 4 toward the fixed jaw 3 by turning of the wing nut 5 in the proper direction. The opener may then be turned around the jar 26 by means of the handle 2 to unscrew the cap 25, if the latter be a,
screw threaded cap, as shown, or the utensil may be used to pry the cap off, if it be merely fitted on the jar and in a manner which will be clear.
The can opener blade l9 and fulcrum tongue 20, and the opener tongue 2| and fulcrum finger 22, also the cork screw 9, are all used in the usual manner and therefore the use and operation thereof need not be entered into;
The foregoing will, it is believed, suflice to impart a clear understanding of my invention without further explanation.
Manifestly the invention, as described, is susceptible of modifications without departing from the inventive concept, and right is herein re served to such modifications as fall within the scope of the subjoined claims.
What I claim is:
1. An opener of the class described comprising a substantially transversely square shank having corner threads extending along its side edges, a handle secured to one end of said shank, a fixed jaw secured to the other end of the shank to extend laterally therefrom, a movable jaw comprising a flat plate slidably mounted on said shank in a plane at a right angleto the axis of the shank and extending laterally therefrom for cooperation with the fixed jaw, and a wing nut on said shank operative to force the movable jaw toward the fixed jaw.
shank and extending laterally therefrom for cooperation with the fixed jaw, and a wing nut on said shank operative to force the movable jaw toward the fixed jaw, the fixed jaw having a flat serrated working face, and the movable jaw having a square aperture therein fitting around said shank to slidably mount the same thereon.
