UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEVI o.- BOYINGTON, or oHIoAeo, ILLINOIS.
CABINET-BED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 230,397, dated July 27, 1880.
Application filed March 22, 1880. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEVI O. BOYINGTON, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cabinet-Beds; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, and in which- Figure 1 represents a side sectional elevation of my improved cabinet-bed prepared for folding together. Fig. 2 represents the same partly folded. Fig. 3 represents the same entirely folded. Fig. 4 represents a side view of the hinge D turned down; and Fig. 5 represents an end view of the same, and also of the panel, with one of its hinged. supports.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts.
My invention is intended as an improvement upon the cabinet-bed as shown and described in Letters Patent No. 219,342, grantedto me on the 9th day of September, 1879; and my invention consists in the construction and combination of the several parts, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, A A represent the side rails, made in two parts, and when unfolded form the side rails, like an ordinary bedstead in general usethat is, narrow or low at the center and rising at the ends.
B B represent the bed-bottom; (J, the footboard; D, the head-board; E E, the legs; H H, rods or braces, all of which are fully shown and described in the aforesaid Letters Patent No. 219,342.
D represents a double or compound hinge, which unites the two parts of the side rails together, and permits of the opening or folding of the two halves of, the bed-bottom on the hinge a.
The two upper parts of the hinge D form a rosette, 1", which may be turned down against the side rail on the hinge b, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, which then forms an ornament to the side rail, and at the same time rigidly secures or looks the two portions of the side rails, A A, together, so as to answer the purpose of a' single or entire side rail. The upper or raised edges of the rails A A and center of hinge a are in the same straight line, so that when the cabinet-bed is folded, as shown in Fig. 3, the vertical sides will be parallel to each other.
To one of the wings of the hinge D is pivoted, at l, a curved and slotted bar, g, and to the other wing, n, is secured a stud, 'i, with a head extending beyond the slot h, and moves freely therein.
Tothe free end of the slotted barg is loosely 6o the bed-bottom B, and its free end is pivoted at f to the lower end of a panel-board, F. To the upper end of said panel-board or panel is also pivoted, at f, a bar, (1, of the same length as bar 01, and pivoted at c.
The operation of my improved cabinet-bed is as follows, viz: When the cabinet-bed is in use the rosette r of the hingeD is turned down, as shown and described in Fig. 4, and when it is desired to fold it the rosette r is turned up, as shown in Fig. 1, when the parts A A will be free to turn on the hinge a and joints of the legs E E and hinged rods H H. The parts thus moving around the hinge a cause the pivoted bar g, fastened on the wing at at l,
to draw the panelFfrom the position, as shown in Fig. 1, down and out of the way, successively, into the positions shown in Figs. 2 and 3. 1n the latter figure the panel F is shown in dotted outline, as also all the other described and operating parts connected therewith.
To the inside of the part A of the side rail is fastened a catch, 0, between which and the part A the panel F slips, andis held by the catch 0 snugly against the part A, and by the bars d and d against the part A, so as to form 0 a recessed panel, F, between the parts A A, as shown in Fig.3.
The bottom part of the recess is formed by the hinge D, the outer part of which is laid with wood facing a. 5
The hinge b on the part A has a spur, c, which enters a socket, c, on the side A, when the bedstead is opened, for the purpose of t preventing the pieces A A from slipping by bars at d, and automatic adjustable panels F,
each other laterally.
It is evident that the panel F may also be operated automatically as described, by connecting the legs E to the bar (I by a connecting bar or link passing through the bed-bottom.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. In a cabinet-bed, the hinged side rails, A A, in combination with slotted and pivoted bar g, pin i, pivoted link or bar j, pivoted all constructed and arranged substantially as shown and described.
2. In a cabinet-bed, the compound or double hinge D, provided with the facing a, in combination with the automatic adjustable panel F, whereby a base is formed to said panel upon closing the cabinet, substantially as described. 20
LEVI O. BOYINGTON.
