Specification of Letters `Patent No. 23,019, dated February 22, 1859.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES L. FAGAN, of Anaqua, in the county of Victoria and State of Texas, have invented a new and Improved Iump; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is ayert-ical central section of t-he principal working parts ofmy invention. This invention consists in having a hollow cylinder attached to a tubular shaft and giving the same a reciprocating partially rotating movement, the cylinder being provided with valves 'and .a vertical radial flanch or piston and in connection with a vertical stationary stop which is fitted within the cylinder, the whole being arranged as hereinafter fully shown and described, whereby a simple, eticient, and durable pump is obtained.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it. i
A, represents a hollow cylinder which is attached to the lower end of a tubular shaft B, the lower end of cylinder A, being fitted water tight in a circular step C, attached to a bed piece D, which is placed at the bot-tom of a reservoir or well from which water is to be elevated. The shaft B, has its bearing in a cross piece a, of a framing arranged in any proper way, and the upper end of said shaft is fitted in a hollow stationary cap E, which is provided with a nozzle or spout F.
The cylinder A, is made to communicate with the shaft B, by means of two curved tubes c, d, each one of which has a valve e, at its upper end opening outward into shaft B, see Fig. l. I/Vithin the cylinder A, a flanch or piston G, is secured. This piston is a radial plate attached permanently to the inner side of the cylinder and extending inward to a vertical shaft II, which is attached to the bed piece D, and extends upward centrally within the cylinder and is fitted loosely in the top of the cylinder. each compartment has an aperture h, made in it, said apertures being each provided with a valve z', opening inward, see Fig.. 2.
The tubes c, d, eachcommunicate with a compartment of the cylinder, the tube 0, communicating with the compartment f, and the tube CZ, with the compartment g.
On the upper part of the shaft B, there are placed loosely two bevel wheels 71,', L, into which a corresponding wheel z", on a horizontal shaft J, gears. To the shaft B, two pawls K, K, are attached which are made to catch alternately into their respective wheels h, L, and also are released alternately therefrom by means of springs j, y', and inclined planes ic, 7c. The springs y', being attached to the shaft B, and the inclined planes to the framing which supports the Working parta-horizontal pins Z, are also attached to the framing, the use of which will be presently explained. The pawls K, bear against the smooth surfaces of the bevel wheels L,-notches m, being made in them into which the pawls catch, at the proper time, see Fig. 8.
The operation is as follows: Power is applied to the shaft J, in any proper manner and a reciprocating partially rotating movement 'is given the cylinder A, through the medium of the gearing t, h, i, and ratchets K, K, the ratchets being made to catch alternately into the notches m, of their respective wheels by means of the springs j, and elevated therefrom by the inclined planes 7c, 7c, the pins Z, preventing the pawls from dropping into the notches during the return movement of the wheels L, when the notches pass under the pawls. The piston G, forces the water alternately from the chambers f g, through their respective tubes c, d, into the shaft B, from whence it is' discharged through the nozzle F. The valves It, of course close by the pressure of the` water under the action of the piston G.
By this simple invention a very efficient submerged pump is obtained. There are but few parts, very simply arranged and in such a way that they will not be liable to get out of repair.
