Description

Oct. 20, 1942. MUNDlNGER 2,299,489
SCREEN- FASTENER Filed Sept. 13, 1941 Inventor Zfarugy 1i Mama {inf Attorney Patented Oct. 20, 1942 SCREEN FASTENER Harvey A. Mundinger, Stevenson, Wash, as-
signor of one-half to Roscoe M. Wright, Stevenson, Wash.
Application September 13, 1941, Serial No. 410,775
2 Claims.
This invention relates to fastener means for window screens, storm windows and the like, the general object of the invention being toprovide two pairs of members, one pair connected with the top of the window screen or storm window and the other pair to the upper ends of the outer side trims of a window frame, the members on the screen or storm window sliding into engagement with the members on the frame when the screen or storm window is slid into place so that the fastening means connect the upper end of the screen or storm window with the window frame, and the parts being so arranged that access to the fastening means which fasten the members to the window frame and screen are hidden from view and are not accessible to one attempting to enter or remove the screen or storm window.
-This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is an elevational view looking toward the outer portion of a window frame having a screen held therein by the improved fastening means.
Figure 2 is an edge view showing the screen frame partly removed from the window frame.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view of a trim member showing one member of the invention attached to an edge thereof.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary view of a screen frame showing the other member of the invention attached thereto.
In these views the letter A indicates a window frame and the letter B a screen frame though it is to be understood that the invention can be used with a storm window if desired.
A plate I is countersunk in the inner edge of the top part of each outer trimming strip S of the window frame and said plate has upper and lower holes therein for receiving fastening means though if desired the nail or screw need only be passed through the upper hole, so that the plate is only held in place by this upper screw or nail, thus permitting the plate to have slight movement so as to facilitate the engagement thereof by the member on the screen frame. However,
can fasten the plate I in place by two screws or nails. The outer edge of the plate is formed with a tongue forming extension 2 which is bent over the plate at its junction with the outer side edge of the plate and this tongue has a flat upper edge, a short free side edge with the rest of the side edge sloping downwardly and outwardly to its point of junction with the plate, as clearly shown in Figure 3.
A plate 4 is countersunk in each side edge of the screen frame at the top thereof and this plate has upper and lower holes for receiving fastening means for holding it in place. The outer edge of each plate 4 is formed with a lip 5 which extends at substantially right angles from the plate and this plate is also provided with a tongue 6 which is connected with the inner edge of the plate and this tongue is made much shorter than the length of the plate and is provided with a substantially V-shaped upper edge 1, one limb being shorter than the other. Both tongues 2 and 6 are spaced from the plate so that the tongue 6 can slide under the tongue 2 in putting the frame B in place. In doing this the frame B has its upper edge placed against the window frame at the outer part thereof and between the trimming strips S and then the frame B is moved upwardly so that the tongue 6 of each plate 4 will pass under a tongue 2 of each plate I. The beveled lower edge of the plate 2 and the V-shaped part 1 of the tongue 6 will facilitate the passing of the tongue 6 under the tongue 2. Thus the upper end of the screen frame is held by the tongues in the upper part of the window frame and then the screen frame is swung inwardly at its lower end and this end fastened to the window frame in any suitable manner, such as the hooks 8 on the lower part of if the person installing the invention desires he the screen frame engaging eyes 9 on the sill of the window frame. As will be seen in Figure 1 only a small part of the fastening means will be visible from the exterior of the window frame and all the fastening means such as the screws or nails used to fasten the plates in position are covered thus preventing one, attempting to enter the window, from removing the screws or nails. The invention is wholly out of the way of the painter and leaves a smooth outside trim unmarked by the usual screen hangers. As the fasteners have about an inch of bearing surface when put together it makes little difference should one of the parts be installed a little too high or a little too low as they would simply shove a little further one through the other.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. Means for detachably holding a frame in a window frame comprising a plate fastened to the inner edge of the outer trimming strip on the Window at the upper end thereof, a tongue on said plate extending over the plate and slightly spaced therefrom, a plate connected to the upper end of the side edge of the first frame, a tongue connected with the last-mentioned plate and extending over portions of the plate and spaced therefrom, the tongue of the second-named plate extending under the tongue of the first-named plate when the first frame is placed between the strips and pushed upwardly, a lip formed on the plate of the first frame at the outer edge thereof and extending outwardly at right angles from the plate with the free edge of the tongue of said plate spaced from the lip.
2. Means for detachably holding a frame in a window frame comprising a plate fastened to the inner edge of the outer trimming strip on the window at the upper end thereof, a tongue on said plate extending over the plate and slightly spaced therefrom, a plate connected to the upper end of the side edge of the first frame, a tongue connected with the last-mentioned plate and eX- tending over portions of the plate and spaced therefrom, the tongue of the second-named plate extending under the tongue of the first-named plate when the first frame is placed between the strips and pushed upwardly, a lip formed on the plate of the first-named frame at the outer edge thereof and extending outwardly at right angles from the plate with the free edge of the tongue of said plate spaced from the lip, the tongue of the first-mentioned plate having a beveled lower end and the tongue of the second-mentioned plate having a pointed upper end] HARVEY A.
