ADJUSTABLE BOAT SEAT Filed Feb. 24, 1941 Patented Oct. 2o, 1942 UNITED STATESv PATENT OFFICE t ADJUSTABLE BOAT SEAT Lambert Reiter, Minneapolis, Minn. Application February 24, 1941, Serial No. 380,262
Claims.
This invention relates to a seat construction and particularly to a construction of a seat for a boat.
The ordinary rowboat is usually provided with one or more seats extending between the side walls thereof and usually has seats at the end portions of the boat. The seats are often not in the position desired by the occupant or operator. It is now a common practice to use an outboard motor and propeller with rowboats which is seseoured at the stern and the seat at the rear end of the boat is usually not in a desirable position for the operator of the motor.
It is an object of this invention to provide a boat seat which can be disposed between theV side walls at various points along the boat length and which may be be secured adjacent the ends of the boat.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a boat seat adapted to extend between the side walls, said seat having provision for being used with boats of different widths and being suitably constructed to be efliciently supported adjacent the ends of the boat.
It is another object of the invention to provide a boat seat which can be supported between the side walls at different points on the boat, the same having means extending over the top of the boat wall and having provision for accommodating different thicknesses of boat wall.
These and other objects and advantages of the invention will be fully set forth in the following description made in connection with the accompanying drawing in which like reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views and in which:
Fig. l is a top plan view of a portion of a boat having the invention applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation of the seat showing the boat walls in vertical section;
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the boat seat;
Fig. 4 is a partial bottom plan view, a portion of the boat wall being shown in horizontal section; and
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4 showing the parts in a different position.
Referring to the drawing a portion of a boat is shown having side walls I 0 extending substantially vertically and which will convergesomewhat and join with the bottom wall II. Spaced ribs I2 are shown extending along the inner sides of walls II) and a strake or strip I3 extends longitudinally along the outer side of wall I0 at the top thereof.
In accordance with the present invention a seat Construction is provided comprising a seat portion I4. While this could be variously made, in the embodiment of the invention illustrated it is shown as comprising a board of general rectangular form having slightly tapering ends. A reinforcing plate I5 extends transversely of board I4 at the center thereof, the same being secured by screws I6. Strips II preferably formed of metal are secured to the bottom of seat I4 adjacent the ends thereof and are secured adjacent their ends by the headed and nutted bolts I8 having their heads countersunk into the top of said seat. Strips I'I are spaced from seat I4 by washers I9. Plates or strips 20 are secured to the top of seat I4 at the ends thereof by screws 2I countersunk therein. Bolts 22 extend centrally through strips 20 and seat I4, the same having flat rounded heads and said bolts project some distance below the bottom of seat I4. Plate-like members 24 are provided, the same engaging the bottom of seat I4 extending inwardly thereon under strips I'I and being tapered toward their inner ends. Members 24 have slots 24a extending longitudinally thereof through which bolts 22 pass. Bolts 22 are provided with wing nuts 25 disposed below plates 24. Members 26 are hingedly connected to members 24 by the headed pintles 2l. Members 26 can thus extend upwardly along the inner side of walls Il) substantially parallel thereto. Members 26 have top portions 25a which extend outwardly substantially at right angles so as to extend across the top of the side walls Iii. If desired, blocks 28 may be secured to members 26 by bolts 29 having their heads countersunk in the outer sides of blocks 28 and projecting through a strap or short bar 3G extending across the inner side of member 265. As shown in Fig. l, bolts 29 are disposed adjacent the sides of block 28 and are equipped at their inner ends with wing nuts 3l. Block 28 can thus be readily removed if desired. The portions 26a have bolts 33 extending vertically therethrough adjacent their outer ends, said bolts having their heads countersunk in their portions 26a. Angle members 34 have one arm overlying portion 26a, which arm is provided with a slot 34a extending longitudinally thereof and thus transversely of wall l0. Bolts 33 extend through slots 34a and are equipped with wing nuts 35. The other arm of members 34 extends downwardly at the outer side of the boat wall or of strip I3.
In operation, the seat I4 will be placed in the desired location between the boat walls I0. The nuts 25 can be loosened and plates 24 can be moved longitudinally so that the members 26 will be suitably positioned for the particular width of boat. It is thus seen that by moving members 24 the seat can .be readily used with boats of diierent Widths. The member 34 can be* moved relatively to member 26 by loosening nut 35 so that members 2S and 34 will snugly iit over the top of the boat Wall. The block 28 is provided for use particularly with boats having the ribs l2. Said block can be conveniently positioned between the ribs l2 and will hold member 26 away from said ribs so that they will not be marred or chaffed. It is often desirable to position the seat adjacent the ends of the boat where the boat Walls converge. When this is done the member 2li can be oscillated about the --axis of bolt 22 and positioned so that member 25 lies substantially parallel to the inclined side of the boat.
From the above description it will be seen that I have provided a simple and efcient boat seat which can be placed in various positions in a rowboat 'and can be adjusted to t various sizes and shapes of boats. The seat can be placed adjament the seat in the rear end of the boat and the operator of an outboard motor can conveniently and comfortably occupy the seat while operating the motor and steering the boat. The seat can be placed where the operator can conveniently straddle the same and thus face the side of the boat while operating the motor and being in a convenient position for fishing. The device is easily made, is rugged in structure and will withstand long and rough usage. The same has been amply d-emonstrated in actual practice and found to be very successful and efficient.
It will, of course, be understood that various changes may be made in the form, details, arrangement and proportions of the parts, without departing from the scope of applicants invention, which generally stated, consists in a device capable oi carrying out the objects above set forth, in the parts and combinations of parts disclosed and dened in the appended claims.
