  • This invention relates to a grappling or lifting tool. It is desirable in such a tool to have gripping jaws arranged to exert great pressure on the object grasped, which pressure preferably increases with the pulling effort or force. It is also desirable to have a grappling tool having opposed jaws mounted to swing so that they can come into parallel or substantially parallel relation when an object is grasped. It is also desirable to have a grappling tool that can be moved vertically along the side of a wall or surface to engage an object between the jaws thereof. 7

3 Claims.
This invention relates to a grappling or lifting tool. It is desirable in such a tool to have gripping jaws arranged to exert great pressure on the object grasped, which pressure preferably increases with the pulling effort or force. It is also desirable to have a grappling tool having opposed jaws mounted to swing so that they can come into parallel or substantially parallel relation when an object is grasped. It is also desirable to have a grappling tool that can be moved vertically along the side of a wall or surface to engage an object between the jaws thereof. 7
It is an object of this invention, therefore, to provide a simple and efiicient grappling tool having gripping jaws, said tool being so arranged that the gripping pressure increases with the lifting or pulling force exerted on said tool.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a grappling tool comprising a pair of levers hinged together adjacent their ends, said levers having projections extending laterally at the same side thereof to which are connected swinging jaws, said jaws thus being oifset at one side of said levers.
It is more specifically an object of the invention to provide a pair of levers pivoted adjacent one end having flanges projecting laterally therefrom at said ends, lugs extending vertically from said flanges and jaws pivoted between said lugs and said sides, said jaws having opposed corrugated faces together with links connecting the other ends of said levers, which links are pivotally connected to a member adapted to be connected to a lifting means.
These and other objects and advantages of the invention will be fully set forth in the following description made in connection with the accompanying drawing in which like reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views and in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view largely in side elevation of the tool;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1 as indicated by the arrows;
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on line 33 of Fig. 1 as indicated by the arrows; and
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the jaws used.
Referring to the drawing, a lever Ill is shown and while this lever could be variously formed, in l the embodiment of the invention illustrated it is shown as made of a substantially flat bar rectangular in transverse cross section. One end of the lever is increased in thickness and the same has a slot, Illa extending therethrough. Lever I has a flange lllb extending laterally from one flat side thereof at its lower end. A flange-like lug me extends perpendicularly to flange Hlb substantially parallel to th adjacent flat side of said lever and another flange I M extends between lug I00 and the adjacent side of lever I0. Another lever II is provided, also illustrated as formed from a substantially flat bar rectangular in transverse cross section, said lever l-I extending through slot Illa. Levers l0 and H are pivoted together by a countersunk pivot rivet l2. Lever H at its lower end has a flange Hbprojecting from one side thereof in the same direction as does flange lllb. A flange-like lug Hc extends perpendicularly to flange l lb at the outer side of flange Nb and a flange Hd extends perpendicularly to flange Ilb between lug He and the adjacent side of lever I I, said flange being extended upwardly in tapered formation as a rib. As shown flanges l 00 and I la are in substantially the same vertical plane. Levers l0 and II have pivoted thereto respectively jaws l3 and I4. Jaw l3 has a fiat rectangular plate-like portion from one side of which projects a lug l3a disposed between lug' I la and the adjacent side of lever II, the same being pivotally connected to lever II by the pivot rivet l5. Pivot rivet I5 is countersunk at the outer side of lug llc. Jaw l3 has an outer gripping face l3b shownas corrugated and having V-shaped ribs extending substantially horizontally therein. Jaw I4 has a lug Ma disposed between lug 10c and the adjacent side of lever Ill and is connected to said lever by a pivot rivet l5. Pivot rivet I6 is countersunk at the outer side of lug lllc. Jaw l4 also has a rectangular plate-like portion having a gripping surface or face Mb illustrated as being formed with substantially horizontally V-shaped ribs. Levers l0 and II have pivotally connected thereto at their upper ends respectively links I! and i8, said links having their other ends in alinement and disposed between the arms of a yoke memher I 9. Links I! and I8 are pivotally connected to the lower ends of said arms by a pivot rivet 20. A filling washer 2| is disposed on rivet 20 between links I! and I8. The yoke member I9 is of inverted U-shape and its bight portion is disposed in a ring 22 connected to the lower end of a chain 23, which chain will be connected to some suitable pulling means.
In operation, when an object is to be engaged to be lifted the tool will be lowered so that the jaws l3 and [4 are disposed at either side of said object. Upon lifting of chain 23 links I! and I8 will be lifted and this will swing levers Ill and H toward each other until jaws l3 and I4 engage the said object. Said jaws l3 and Hi can swing so that the opposed corrugated surfaces of the jaws will come into substantially parallel relation at either side of a plate, pin or similar ob.- ject to be gripped. Continued lifting or pulling upon member 23 will tend to move jaws I3 and I4 toward each other and increase the gripping efiect. The chain 23 will be lifted until the object gripped is lifted or raised as desired. The lugs I Be and I I form stops at their adjacent edges which are engaged by the rear sides of the jaws l3 and I4.
From the above description it will be seen that pling tool. By having the jaws l3 -and l4voffset at one side of the levers the tool can be lowered along the side of a wall or surface sothat the jaws can engage with a pin or other object adjacent said surface. This is often important in pulling loose pins or plates used in concrete forms or othersimilar work.
The tool is very rugged in construction and can be used to exert great force upon an object which is to be pulled or lifted. The device has been amply demonstrated-in actual practice and found to be very successful and efficient.
It will, of course, be understood that various changes may be made in the form, details, ar'- rangement and proportions of the parts, without. departing from the scope of applicant's invention, which generally'stated, consists in a device capable of carrying out the objects above set forth, in the parts and combinations of parts disclosed and defined in the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A grappling tool having in-combination, a pair of levers connected by a pivot adjacent their ends, said levers having flanges projecting therefromrespectively at the same sides thereof and substantially parallel to the axis of said pivot, lugs upstanding. from said flanges respectively, jaws pivoted respectively to said lugs above said flanges aboutaxes extending parallel to the axis of said pivot, said jaws having opposed corrugated faces adapted to swing into parallel relation when an object is grappled, said flanges respectivelyforming stops for said jaws,,linksconnected at one end respectively to the opposite ends of said levers and means pivotally connected to the other ends of said links adapted to receive a support for said tool adapted to be lifted.
2. A grappling tool having in combination, a pair of levers connected by a pivot adjacent their ends and having projections extending laterally at the same sides thereof respectively so as to have portions disposed respectively at said side, a jaw having a portion pivoted to each lever in alignment with said projection and about a pivot extending parallel to said first mentioned pivot, said jaws having gripping surfaces disposed in single planes respectively and extending to the edges of said jaws and extending to one side of said levers so that no part of said tool extends beyond the edges of said jaws at said side thereof, said gripping surfaces being adapted to swing into substantially parallel relation at opposite sides of an object gripped whereby said jaws can be disposed with their sides against a vertical surface and an object close to said surface engaged by said gripping surface without the rest of said tool engaging said surface.
3. A grappling tool having in combination, a pair of levers connected by apivot adjacent their ends, said levers having substantially flat sides. and-each having a flange projecting laterally, at the bottom thereof from said flat sides, said flanges projecting in the same direction, a flange-like lug extending upwardly from said flange on each of said levers, said lugs being disposed in substantially the same plane, a jaw having a lug pivoted between said lug and said flange on each of said levers about a pivot the axis of which is parallel to the axis of said pivot, said jawshaving gripping surfaces thus disposed at one side of said levers, said gripping surfaces being disposed in single planes respectively having sides substantially aligned with one side of said levers so that no part of said tool projects beyond said side whereby said jaws can be disposed with the said sides adjacent a vertical surface and an object close to said surface engaged'by'said jaws without the rest of said tool engaging said surface.
