Gentry, Philadelphia, Pa,
Application March 31, 1941, Serial No. 386,166
4 Claims.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in registering devices of a type adapted for properly centering a photographic negative in a chase of a photographic reproducing machine, such as disclosed in my co-pending application Serial No. 3 filed December 21, 1938.
An object of the present invention is to provide a registering device by means of which the negative may be accurately centered in the chase before placing the chase in the camera so that the negative will be properly alined with similar registering marks on the table of the machine which holds the sensitized sheet on which the negative is to be reproduced.
A further object is to provide a register of this character by mean of which the negative may be centered with a minimum of effort and time and in which accuracy is assured in the results attained.
A still further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, efiicient and reliable in performance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts and in which- Figure 1 is a top plan View,
Figure 2 is a side elevational view,
Figure 3 is a top plan view with a chase mounted in position on the register,
Figure 4 is a longitudinal sectional view taken substantially on a line 44 of Figure 3,
Figure 5 is a transverse sectional view taken substantially on a line 5-5 of Figure 1,
Figure 6 is a group perspective view of the upper and lower aligning plates, and
Figure 7 is a vertical sectional view through one of the spacing supports for the plates.
Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates a bed plate of rectangular form supported on legs 6 adjacent each corner. The plate is formed with a rectangular central opening I having a plurality of rigid arms 8 projecting inwardly from opposed edges of the opening, the arms being arranged in spaced parallel relation and also with their ends spaced apar Upper and lower rectangular transparent plates 9 and III are supported respectively above and below the arms by screws ll inserted in openings I2 formed in theplates 9 and I0 and threaded into the arms 8, spacing blocks l3 supporting the plates 9 and H) in parallel horizontal relation'to the plate 5.
At one longitudinal edge of the plate 5 are a pair of stops l4 rising from the surface of said plate, the stops having longitudinally aligned front faces parallel to the adjacent edge of the plate. A stop [5 also rises from' the plate 5 adjacent a side edge thereof and at the front edge of the plate 5 is a set screw I6 threaded through an upstanding post I! and adapted to clamp a chase holder I8 against the stops.
The chase holder preferably embodies a construction disclosed in my aforesaid co-pending application and has the central opening in which the chase I9 is clamped by the set screws 20 and. 2] for centering the chase in the opening of the chase holder.
Positioned in the chase is a transparent plate 22 on which is placed the negative 23, the edges of the plate 22 and negative 23 being clamped under the rubber stops 24 by the clamp 25 and set screw 26.
The plates 9 and I0 are. marked with intersecting lines 21 extending from edge to edge of the plates, the lines of the respective plates being in vertical registry.
Likewise the negative 23 is marked at the edges of the image area 23 thereon with lines 28 adapted to register with the lines of the plates 9 and I0 when the chase is properly adjusted in the chase holder.
By providing the vertically spaced lines on the plates 9 and. I0 and the registering marks 28 on the negative, the thickness of which, plus the plate 22, spaces the mark slightly above the upper plate 9, will provide three spaced apart sight marks and accordingly, by sighting the several marks to cause an exact aligning thereof will insure the exact registering of the negative.
It will be understood the negative is of the usual translucent material so that when the register is positioned over a light, such as an electric lamp, the workman may look down on the negative and thus, by adjusting the chase in the chase holder, bring the lines of the negative into registry with the lines of the fixed plates 9 and I0 and accordingly, when the chase holder is placed in the camera the negative will be properly aligned with the sensitized sheet on the table of the reproducing machine for reproducing the image, or a desired portion thereof, at the desired position onto the sheet.
It is believed the details of construction and manner of use of the device will be readily understood from the foregoing without further detailed explanation.
What I claim is:
1. A register for negatives of a photographic reproducing apparatus, said register comprising a base plate having an opening therein, a plurality of transparent plates, means for securing the transparent plates in a fixed vertically spaced horizontal position in the opening and means for clamping a chase in position on the first named plate above said transparent plates, said chase being adapted for mounting a negative therein and said negative and said transparent plates having marks adapted to be registered upon adjustment of the chase relative to the said plates.
2. A register for negatives of a photographic reproducing apparatus, said register comprising a base plate having an opening therein, a plurality of transparent plates, means for securing the transparent plates in a fixed vertically spaced horizontal position in the opening and means for clamping a chase in a position horizontally 'on said plates, said chase being adapted for Mounting a negative therein and said negative and .said
transparent plates having marks adapted to be registered upon adjustment of the chase relative to said plates.
3. A register for negatives of a photographic reproducing apparatus, said register comprising a base plate having an opening therein, a sighting device, means for supporting the sighting device in the opening, said sighting device comprising a plurality of fixed spaced apart elements, and means for mounting a chase in a position relative to said sighting device, said chase being adapted for supporting a negative and said negative being adapted to have predetermined portions thereof registered with predetermined portions of the sighting device upon adjustment of the chase relative thereto.
4. A register for negatives of a photographic reproducing apparatus, said register comprising a base plate having an opening therein, inwardly projecting arms on an edge of the opening, a plurality of transparent plates secured to said arms in vertically spaced parallel relation, and means for securing a chase in position to said base plate, said chase being adapted for mounting a negative therein and said negative and said transparent plates having registerable marks thereon.
