SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,917, dated June 15, 1880.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, J OSEPH (J. MILLER, of Malden, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self-Closing Fau- The object of my invention is to provide means for opening the spring-valve in an easy and expeditious manner, so as to avoid the friction and wear attending the opening of this class of faucets as now in use or as here- Y Iofore constructed, wherein slidingincline surfaces are brought in contact in opening the usual; and it consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the several set forth;
Figure 1 is a partial sectional view, showing a self-closing faucet constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the position of the parts when the valve is closed. Fig. 3 is a detached View, showing a modification of the same.
A represents the body or shell of the faucet, provided with an outlet or spout, B, as usual. The interior or central bore of the body A is provided with a water-way and seat of any desired form or construction which may be desired, such seatbeing adapted to form a water-tight joint with a packing, T, provided upon the lower end of the valve-rod O, as heretofore, this vertical valve-rod being provided with a suitable coiled spring, D, which has a hearing at its lower end upon the top of the packed valve T, and at its upper end against the interior of the screw-cap E, which. is screwed upon the top portion of the valvecase A, and is provided with a central hole or opening to permit the said valve-rod G to be drawn upward through it sufficiently to open the water-way, as shown, by compressing the Now, in order to raise said valve from its seat, so as to allow a free discharge of water while the valve is held open, and to insure its instant closing by the recoil of the spring, I extend a frame or casing, F, upward from the. top of the usual screw-cap E, and provide said frame or extended case F with a horizontal shaft, H, which has a bearing in opposite sides of said frame or case F, so as to permit of being turned or partially revolved in either direction by means of the cross-handle J, secured to one end of the said horizontal shaft H, which extends outward from the case F for the purpose. To this shaft H is rigidly secured a short arm, L, within the said case F, and projecting downward at a right angle from the shaft, and to this short arm L is connected a link or swivel piece, N, by a hingejoint, and this link or swivel piece N is in like manner connected to the upper end of the vertical valve-rod O.
To the upper end of the case Fis screwed a cap, P, thus inclosing the connections between the horizontal shaft and the upper end of the valve-rod.
It will be seen that in Fig. 1, by simply turning the cross-handle J in either direction the valve will be fully opened, and that when released the recoil of the spring Dis sufficient to close the same. As there is no friction to overcome, the spring is certain to act, even when constructed quite light.
In Fig.3 is shown a modification of the connecting parts between the horizontal shaftand the upper end of the valve-rod; but I do not consider this device as desirable as the previously-described attachment.
I am aware that heretofore reciprocating valves have been constructed with a jointed connecting -rod between the valve and the horizontal shaft, provided with an arm connected thereto. Therefore I do not broadly claim such.
Having thusdescribed my invention, what I claim is The combination, with the faucet-shell A, having a casing, F, secured to the top of the packing-cap E, of the horizontal shaft I-I, provided with a handle, J, and short arm L, and the link-piece N, connected to the upper end of the valve-rod 0 within said casing, substantially as shown and described, as and for the purposes set forth.
