W. LONG TOILET SEAT AND HINGE COMBINATION Filed Jan. 16, 1941 Lgr Patented June 1 6, i942 Tons-r sear on cor/mansion William Long, Waldo, Wis.
Application January 16, 1941, Serial No. 374,620
&- Claims.
This invention relates to toilet bowls, and has for its object to provide means whereby perfect ventilation thereof may be had.
Another object of the invention is to provide means whereby bath rooms and the like may be ventilated through toilet bowls located therein.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for forced direct ventilation of toilet bowls.
Another object of the invention is to provide a forced draft through a toilet bowl and means whereby the foul air therein may be transferred to outside atmosphere without entering the room in which the toilet is located.
A further object of the invention is to provide Y automatically operated means whereby a toilet bowl may be ventilated while being used.
A still further object of the invention is, to provide a ventilating hinge for a toilet bowl seat.
Another object of the invention is to provide means whereby a toilet room may be ventilated withoutthe necessity f having a window therein.
And a still further object of the invention is to provide a new form of a durable and inexpensive hinge.
With the above and such other objects in view as may hereinafter more fully appear, I have invented the device shown in the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a toilet, embracing my invention;
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof;
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view of the toilet seat;
Figure 4 is a section on line 4-t of Figure 2;
Figure 5 is a section on line 55 of Figure 3;
Figure 6 is a section on line 6-6 of Figure 3; and
Figure 7 is a view, similar. to Figure 4, the seat being in raised position.
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the following specification and in the several views in the drawing in which I indicates a common toilet bowl having the usual rearwardly extending lugs 2 and 3 to which is secured a tubular hinge pintle 4 by means of L-bolts 5 and B. The tube 4 has end closure caps I and 8 which are held secured to said tube through the medium of the arms 9 and In of said bolts 5 and t, which aims project through aligning bores in the caps and tube; Encircling .and pivotally mounted upon the tube 4 are a pair of spaced apart band rings H and 12 which are provided with extensions, suitably shaped,,-hinge or hollow strap it. These hinge straps are mortised into the toilet seat it, their under surfaces H and i9 being flush with the under surface as of said when the seat l6 is closed down upon the bowl.
The members l3 and M are each provided with wings 23 and it with screw-openings 25 whereby the said strap may be secured by means of screws to the seat IS. The caps i and 8 seat against the members H and i2 and thus hold said members from sliding movement upon the tube a.
Centrally disposed on the tube i is a pipe coupling 26 the threaded nipple 2? of which opens into said tube, through a bore 28 therein. Screwed to the nipple 21 is a foul ,air take off pipe 29 leading to a casing 30 of a suction fan 32, which draws air from the bowl 22 through said above-described fixtures and forces the said air out through the outlet pipe 33 leading to outside atmosphere. The fan 32 (the blades of which may be formed of rubber to avoid noise) maybe driven by an electric motor (not shown) or otherwise. The members H and ii; are provided with openings 34 and 35 respectively which align with the openings l5 of tube 5 when the seat 16 is in raised position, as when the bowl is used as a urinal only, thus permitting foul air tubes 43 and M, opening into tube A as at to be drawn off in this case also. The members H and 12 are provided with hinge lugs 36 and 3'! to which the hinges 38 and 39 of the toilet lid 4 are pivotally connected. An electric switch 4| is connected to the bowl I so as to be automatically operated when a weight is seated upon the seat l6 sumciently heavy to force the seat down to make contact with'and operate the switch. A wire connection 42 connects the switch with the motor and fan casing 30.
Having now described my invention that which I claim to be new and desire to procure by Let-= tersPatent is: V
1. In a device as described, a tubular pintle, caps closing each end of the pintle, tubular hinge members held in position on the pintle by said caps, tubular extensions from said hinge members embedded in a toilet seat and having their outer ends opening substantially over the water seal of a toilet bowl and a common means for supporting said caps and holding the pintle against rotary movement.
2. The device as claimed in claim 1, said pintle having a plurality of openings under each hinge member with one of which said tubular extensionsare adapted to align in either vertical or horizontal position.
- tubular hinge members held in position 3. The device as claimed in claim 1, said pintle having a center outlet and take of! pipe connected thereto. a
4. In a ventilating device, a tubular pintle, caps supporting and closing each end 0'! the pintle, on the pintle by said caps, tubular extensions from said hinge members embedded in a toilet seat and having their outer ends opening into a toilet bowl when the seati down, said pintle having 0.
- gases through said 'aasasss 3 are adapted to align in either vertical or horizontal position, said pintle having a center outlet and a take on pipe connected therewithand a motor operated suction fan tor drawing oil pipe, said openings and said WILLIAM Lona.
