Application February 3, 1940, Serial No. .':.1'l,12l 1 Claim. (o1. 31-15) 1 This invention relates to water main locks used in repairing lead or copper water mains.
It is well known that difiiculty has often been encountered in repairing a leak in a lead or cop per water main, so that a mechanic may sometimes have to work in a foot or two of water using a pair of hammers to make the repair and thereby getting drenched. Such mechanics usually have available a pipe cutter, which comprises a yoke on which one cutting wheel is rotatably mounted, and on which there is slidably mounted a bracket movable upon turninga screw screwed to the yoke, and carrying a'pair of rotary rollers.
It is an object of this invention to provide a tool of the character described consisting of the yoke, bracket and screw of the usual cutting tool,
ter described, whichshall be relatively inexpensive to manufacture, easy to manipulate, and which shall yet be practical and efiicient to a high degree in use. 7
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claim.
The portion 19 of the yoke H which interconnects the arms l4 and I6 has outwardly extending guide flanges 2!, on which the bracket 12 is slidably mounted. Said bracket I2 has a pair of parallel side walls 22 interconnected by a vertical web portion 23. The lower portions of walls 22,
' forwardly of the Web 23, are interconnected by a wall portion 22a formed with an opening 222),
rotatably and non-slidably receiving the upper end of the screw 13. The rear portions of the wallsZZ are formed with grooves 24 on the inner faces thereof to receive the flanges 2|. The forward portions of the walls 22 are formed with two pairs of aligned bearing openings 26, carrying a pair of horizontally aligned parallel pins 21, which in the ordinary cutting tool, carry a pair of rotary rollers.
In the tool embodying the invention, there is mounted on the pin ii, a lock element 30 comprising a flat horizontal wall 3| contacting the lower edges 32 of the bifurcated walls It, and disposed at right angles to said walls, and a vertical, upwardly extending web 34 disposed between the bifurcated walls IB and formed with a through opening receiving the pin I1.
Mounted on the bracket 12 is a lower lock element having a portion 41 received between the walls 22, and formed with through openings through which the pins 27 pass. As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the-embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A tool of the character described comprising a yoke having a pair of arms and an interconnecting portion, one arm having an internally screw threaded tubular portion, a screw screwed within said tubular portion and having a handle at one end, said interconnecting portion being formed with longitudinal ribs, a bracket having a pair of walls formed with grooves slidably receiving said ribs, said bracket having a pair of parallel transverse pins, a lower upwardly and last mentioned pin passes, said upper lock elemerit having a fiat wall perpendicular to said web and engaging the lower edges of the parallel walls of said last mentioned arm, the staight upper edge of said lower locking element being aligned with the web of said upper locking element.
