This invention relates `to scissors and more particularly to offset scissors in which the 'blades of the two pivotal components are offset from the respectively associated handles in the direction of the axis of the pivot or pintle. The
invention further relates to an improved scissors assembly including a novel form of pintle connection between the pivotal components. The
improved pivotal connection,- although especially suited for embodiment in oiset scissors also may be used in scissors or shears of the more conventional kind.
As is now well known, the offsetting of scissors blades and handles enables the operator to cut more Aconveniently and accurately because the line of vision may coincide with the line of cutlting without being obstructed by the operators hand.. Moreover, the scissors may be used withdetachable connection between the pintle 5 andV out the operators `hand being held in a strained or uncomfortable position. 'I'he better vision and ease of operation are advantageous i for nearly all, if not all kindsA of cutting work but these advantages are of particular and sometimes crucial importance in surgical work in cavities.
' An object of the present invention is toprovide an improved offset scissors construction in which the parts are ,so assembled and related as to provide better and more permanent alignment tegrally with the sleeve at its other end. The outside diameter of the sleeve is approximately equal to the maximum width of the blade, and
the length of thesleeve is substantial, the exact length depending upon the amount of offset de-` sired. y l The component B comprises ablade 4, a hollow pintle integral with the blade 4, and a handle 6 detachably connected tothe pintle adjacent the outer end thereof. In the form shown, the
handle 6 is provided by forming the pintle endi portion which lprojects beyond the handle 3 with a pair of open end slot's 1-1 adapted interlockingly to receive lugs 8`B on the handle 6 when the handle bore 9 is passed over the pintle end portion.
The diameter of the pintle throughoutits length is lessthan :the opening within the sleeve 2` so that, in assembling the components A and B. the pintle 5 is simply passed up through the jslee've 2 until the blades I and 4 are in proper of' the cutting blades than has been possible with Figu're is an enlarged fragmentary vertical;

The pivotal component A comprises a blade if cutting contact, and the handle 6 is slipped on the projecting end of the pintlewith the lugs 8--8extending radially into theslots I--1.` The pintle is of sufficient length to includea journal portion having bearing within the Vsleeve 2 and a projecting portion adapted to receive the handle 6 and a retaining device adapted to maintain the components in properly assembled relation.
v In its preferred form, the retaining device comprises a split washer or snap ring Il) which is l slip-tted over the pintle end and received in a Figure il is a section onthe line 2-i-2 of lFigure i' circumferential groove -II formed in the pintle end. The oitermost wall of the groove provides a shoulder I2 under which the snap ring Il) extends and which prevetsvoutward movement of the snap ring. The width of the groove longitudinally of the pintle is greater than the thickness of the snap ringso that there is clearance at I3 between the snap ring land the inner wall of the groove il. Consequently the snap ring, which isnrigid axially of the pintle, hasvbearing engagement directly with the shoulder I2 and the adjacent' face of the nearer component B. `The `,parts are so formed as to permit the snap ring to a sleeve 2 formed integrally with theblade at one e'nd of the sleeve, and a handle lfm-'med in- *i the accurate and per be moved in and out of the groove Il when the Acomponents are assembled so that, when the "parts become worn, the wear may betaken up or compensated for byv removing the snap ring and replacing it Awith one of slightly greater thickness.
The construction disclosed herein provides for nentvalignment of the cutting blades without the necessity of including heel extensions provided in son@ oiset scissors herein embodies the invention in the now preferred form, it will vbe understood that changes may be made within the scope of the invention as dened in the claims. l
I claim: l
1. In scissors construction, the combination of a pair of pivotal scissors components; a pintle pivoting said 'components and having an end lportion projecting vaxially beyond said compoi nents and a shoulder facing in a direction opposite the direction of projection of said end portion and toward said components, the shoulder being radially entirely within the circumference of the pintle; and a retaining member interposed between said shoulder and the adjacent face of the nearer of said components and engaging said nearer component immediately adjacent said pintle. In scissors construction, the combination of a pair f pivotal scissors components; a pintle pivoting said components and having an end portion projecting axially beyond said components and a shoulder facing ina direction opposite the direction of projection of said lend portion and toward-said components, the shoulder being radially entirely within the circumference of the pintle; and a retaining member interposed between said shoulder and the adjacent face of the nearer of said components and engaging said nearer component immediately adjacent said pintle, said retaining member being rigid axially of said pintle.
3. In scissors construction, the combination of a pair of pivotal scissors components; a pintle pivoting said components arid having an end portion projecting axially beyond said components and a shoulder facing in a 'direction opposite the direction 'of projection of said end portion and toward said components, the shoulder being radially entirely within the circumference of the pintle: anda snap ring slip-fitted around said projecting en'd portion and between said shoulder and theadjacent face of the nearer of said components.

5. Scissors construction as defined in claim 1 in which the pintle'is formed integrally with the blade of one of the components.

In scissors construction, the combination of a pair. of pivotal scissors, components; a pintle pivoting said components and having an end portion projecting axially beyond said components and a shoulder facing in a direction opposite the direction of projection of said end portion and toward said components,v the shoulder being -radially entirely within the circumference of the pintle; and a snap ring slip-fitted around said projecting end portion and between said shoulder and the adjacent face of the nearer ofl said components, said snap ring filling the axially`extending space between lsaid shoulderv and the adjacent face of the nearer of said coml ponents and being removable for replacement by a similar but thicker snap ring to take up wear.
8. Scissors construction as defined in claim 3 in which the two pivoted components each includes a blade and a handle mutually offset axially of the pintle.
9. In scissors construction, the combination of a first pivotal component comprising a sleeve, a blade at one end of the sleeve and a'handle at the other end of the sleeve; a second pivotal component comprising a blade, a pintle connected to said last named blade and having a portion extending through and journaled in said sleeve and an end portion projecting past the handle of said iirs'tA component, and a handle on said pintle end .portionoutwar'dly beyond said first named handle, all portions of said pintle being of sufficiently small diameter to pass through said sleeve for assembly, said end portion of the pintle being formed with a circumferential groove; and a snap ring fitted in said groove and projecting radially from said pintle and overly- `ing the handle of said second component.
