SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,126, dated May 25, 1880. Application filed April 20, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES R. SHAGKLETON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Masts or Standards for Vessels and other purposes, of which thefollowing is a specification.
My invention is adapted to ships masts, and also to standards for scaffolds and the like; and it consists in a mast or standard constructed in two sections, one fixed and the other movable, in combination with a sleeve fitted on the fixed section and supporting the movable section, vertical guides for the sleeve, and a mechanism acting on the sleeve for operating the movable section, so that the mast or standard is practically adapted to be shortened or lengthened at will. The mechanism referred to consist-sot a rack attached to the lixed section, a pinion or worm Wheel meshing with the rack, and a worm meshing with the pinion, both the pinion and the worm being mounted in the sleeve, and by this construction such mechanism is adapted not only to raise and lower the movable section, but also to check the same in the desired position.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a side view of my mast or standard, with portion of the sleeve broken away to show more clearly the operating mechanism. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section thereof.

The letter A designates the fixed section, and B- the movable section, of the mast or standard,- O, the sleeve fitted on the fixed section and supporting the movable section, and D D the vertical guides for the sleeve.
The fixed section A is cylindrical, and it is either fastened or simply rests on the ground, according to the use to which the whole is put, and to said section are attached two parallel tenons, which are adapted to mortises in the sleeve 0 and constitute the guides D D, one of such tenons forming also a rack and being a part of the operating mechanism for the movable mast-section.

It will be seen that if the worm H is turned in one or the other direction the pinion G travels up or down in the rack D, whereby the movable section B is raised or lowered and the mast or standard is lengthened or shortened, as the case may be, while the worm at the same time acts as a stop to the revolution of the pinion, so that the movable section is thereby firmly held in the position to which it may be adjusted.
For the purpose of steadying the sleeve 0 on the fixed section A, I arrange therein two supplemental pinions,j j, one above and the other below the pinion G, to travel in the rack; but it is not essential to use these supplemental pinions neither is it essential to use the precise mechanism herein described for operating the movable mast-section.
My invention can be applied with advantage to the masts of ships, and particularly those passing under bridges; but it is equally applicable to the standards of scaffolds and other structures.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a mast or standard, the combination of the fixed section A, the movable section B, the sleeve 0, the guides for the sleeve, and a mechanism for operating the movable section, consisting of the rack D, the pinion or wormwheel G, and worm H, substantially as shown and described.
