This invention relates to portable extension lamps.
An object of the invention is to provide a portable extension lamp of the type adapted to be connected to a suitable source of electrical current, with means on the lamp for readily supporting the same to project light at various angles, the lamp being provided with a handle which acts as a conduit for an electrical extension cord, and which handle is arranged to prevent the weight thereof from rocking the lamp on its supporting means.
Other objects of the invention will be manifest from the following brief description and the accompanying drawing.
Of the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a view illustrating a lamp embodying the invention, supported on one of its bases, to project light in a horizontal direction.
Figure 2 is a bottom view of the lamp shown in Figure 1, illustrating the lamp supported on another base to project light upwardly.
Figure 3 is an elevation of the lamp as viewed from the left of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral II! designates an annular casing, having the sides thereof tapering toward a fiat base portion II for supporting the lamp in one position on a flat supporting surface, indicated in chain-dotted lines at S. Formed in the tapered wall of casing I!) may be aportion I2, having one surface l2 in the plane of the fiat surface II, and another surface I2 in a plane at right angles to the surface IZ the portion I2 being adapted to support the lamp with the face l2 against supporting surface S, as shown in Figure 1, to project light from the lamp in a horizontal direction.
In the large open end of the casing I may be mounted a concave reflector I3, having a socket I fixed therein for removably receiving a suitable electric bulb I5. This reflector is held in position in the casing by means of an annular rim I6 having a lip portion I'I engaging under projection I8 on one side of the casing, and a clamping device I9 releasably engaging a lug 29 fixed on the casing at the other side thereof. An open mesh screen BI may be clampingly received between the rim It and the edge portions of the casing I 0, for protecting the bulb l5.
Secured to an apertured neck 22, integral with casing IIJ, may be an elongate handle 23 extending outwardly of the casing Ill at such an angle that the end portion of the handle will engage the supporting surface S when the lamp is supported, either on its side upon supporting base I2, as shown in Figure 1, or in an upturned position, supported on base II, as shown in Fig-' ures 2 and 3. The inner end of handl 23 is in substantially spaced relation to the planes of both bases I I and 26 so that the inclination of the handle to the respective bases ,will provide ample space between a substantial portion of the handle and a supporting surface to gfacilitate grasping the handle in either supported position of the lamp (see Figures 1 and 2).
The handle 23 may have an electrical extension cord 24 extending therethrough, the cord 24 being adapted to be connected to a suitable source of electrical current, such as a wall plug (not' shown) to connect the socket l4 and bulb I5.
The improved lamp is adapted for use by automobile mechanics, for example, while working on the under side of an automobile, in which case the lamp may be supported on base I I, to project the light from the bulb I5 upwardly, or in other cases, the lamp may be supported on its side on base portion I2 The lamp may readily be moved or adjusted by means of the handle 23 which also serves to maintain the lamp firmly in any given position.
Modifications of the invention may be resorted to without departing from the spirit thereof or the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A portable extension lamp comprising a casing, an electric light source in said casing for projecting light from one end thereof, a supporting base at the opposite end of said casing, a second base on said casing intermediate said ends thereof, the plane of said second base being at an angle to the plane of the first-named base, an elongate handle connected to said casing intermediate said opposite ends thereof, and an extension cord received through said handle to provide an electrical connection to said light source, the connecting end of said handle being in substantially spaced relation to the planes of both 4 said bases, said handle extending freely outwardly of the casing at angles to both of said planes and each of these angles being such with relation to the length of the handle that portions of the end thereof coincide with the respective planes, the end of the handle thereby being adapted to contact a supporting surface when the casing is supported on either of its bases to prevent tilting of the casing due to the weight of the handle and said angles of the handle also providing space between a major portion thereof and the supporting surface in either of said supported positions of the casing.
2. A portable extension lamp comprising a casing, a light source in said casing, a reflector mounted at one end of said casing for reflecting light from said source outwardly of said end, the wall of the casing being tapered from said reflector end toward the other end thereof to provide a relatively small supporting base at said other end, a second base on said casing intermediate said ends thereof the plane of which is substantially at right angles to the plane of the first-named base, an elongate handle connected to said casing intermediate opposite ends thereof, and an extension cord received through said handle to provide an electrical connection to said light source, the connecting end of said handle being in substantially spaced relation to the planes of both said bases, said handle extending freely outwardly of the casing at angles to both. of said planes and each of these angles being such with relation to the length of the handle that portions of the end thereof coincide with the respective planes, the ends of the handle thereby being adapted to contact a supporting surface when the casing is supported on either of its bases to prevent tilting of the casing due to the weight of the handle and said angles of the handle also providing space between a major portion thereof and the supporting surface in either of said supported positions of the casing.
