Description
E; E. STROM DOOR HOLDER March 24, 1942.
Filed Nov. 12, 1940 49 [NVENTOR Patented, Mar. 24, 1942 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE DOOR HOLDER Edwin E. Strom, Ely, Minn.
Application November 12, 1940, Serial No. 365,351
1 Claim.
My invention relates to door-holders and has as one of the principal objects thereof the provision of a door-holder so constructed and arranged whereby th same may be easily and conveniently disposed under the bottom of a door and in engagement with the floor to secure the door against swinging in either direction.
An important object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described which is simple in construction, durable in use, efiicient in operation and economical in manufacture.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, appended claim and annexed drawing.
Referring to the drawing wherein like reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a door having m invention applied thereto.
Figure 2 is an end elevation of a door equipped with my invention, the latter being disposed in non-operative position.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 1 but illustrating the invention in operative position for maintaining the door against swinging.
My novel form of door holder 5 comprises a strip 6 of resilient material, for instance, rubber, and. which has its upper endsecured to one face of a swingable door 1 above the bottom face 8 thereof. The lower end of the strip 6 extends through and is fixed to a member or ball 9 of compressible material, for instance, sponge rubber. The ball 9 is normally maintained by said strip slightly above the floor over which the door swings.
The upper end of the strip 6 is secured to the door by means of a screw Ill and interposed between the screw l0 and the upper strip 6, is a reinforcing metallic plate II for clamping the upper end of the strip in appressed relation with the door and to preclude tearing of the strip with respect to the screw. Subjacent the screw I0, the door is provided with a staple I2 through which the strip movably extends, said staple constituting a guide for maintaining the lower end of the strip against swinging movement with respect to the door.
In operation, the parts being in the positions illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, the door is swung to the approximately desired open position whereupon the foot of the operator forces the member 9 downwardly and between the bottom face of the door and the fioor and at the same time the operator moves the door in the direction toward the member 9 thereby compressing the member in a manner to dispose the same under the bottom face of the door wh'ereby the member securely holds the door in the desired position. To release the door, the foot of the operator is placed upon the member to hold the same in fixed position with respect to the floor and the door. is then moved in the opposite direction. Thus, the member will assume its decompressed shape upon the release of the foot of the operator therefrom as clearly illustrated in Figure 2.
Without further elaboration the foregoing will so fully explain the invention that others may, by applying current knowledge, readily adapt the same for use under various conditions of service. Moreover, it is not indispensable that all the features of the invention be used conjointly since they may be employed advantageously in various combinations and sub-combinations.
It is obvious that the invention is not confined to the herein described use therefore as it may be utilized for any purpose to which it is adaptable. It is therefor to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific construction as illustrated and described as the same is only illustrative of the principles of operation, which are capable of extended application in various forms, and that the invention comprehends all construction within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is:
In a holding attachment for a door, an elastic strip adapted to be fastened in vertical position to the lower portion of the door, and a member of resilient material easily yieldable to pressure secured to the lower end of the said strip, the said resilient member formed to assume a spherical shape in released inoperative position and compressible to a deformed fiat shape between the bottom of the door and a floor in operative door holding position.
EDWIN E. STROM.
