With these and other objects in view, the-invention` consists of certain novel features of construction, as will beA more fully described, andv particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

These consist`- of.` ahbase which is usually bolted to the motor, usually thecrank case of a'motor, and provide for mounting a removable casing on this baseN which containsv a filter cartridge. Means for circulating oil through the cartridge, with a by-pass in the base' should the cartridge becomer clogged, isusually provided. The by-pass', by being connected directly` across the inlet and outlet openings with a resilient control, will operate upon a differential of pressures usually set at about four pounds differential. When the circulation of the engine commences there is no pressure upon the discharge iside of the base and consequently the bypass valve opens and by reason of its becoming unseated even thoughr some oil may pass through the cartridge, which is sometimes doubtful, the pressure fluctuates so that the valve is continually vibrating and the spring which operates it becomes-fatigued and inoperative.
Itis also desirable in many instances to pro-- vide a different size of casing to be mounted on thevbase and at times it also becomes necessary to sol shift the base that the filter will miss certain other essential parts of the motor upon which it is mounted which cannot be accomplished by means of the base and casing as a unit always in line in a single operating position, especially if the casing size is increased. Accordingly, I have provided a member which I call an adapter which enables the casing to be offset With relation to thebase and which may accommodate a different size of casing by providing different adapters. Also, the adapter provides a separate discharge conduit so that the oil does not pass again through the base and accordingly substantially no pressure in the discharge line is had rather than the necessity of operating by reason of a differential of pressures for thecontrol of the by-passvalve, and thus the by-pass valvespring may be made sufhciently strong so that thevalve will not operate upon a mere fiuctuation of pressures such as frequently exists in the system; and the following is a more detailed description of the present embodiment of this invention, illustrating the `preferred. means by which these advantageous results may be accomplished: f

The base Il! is bolted through openings I3 to the crank case of the engine so located that theoil supply conduit emanating from the cranlr case-will matchup with therecess I5 provided inthe face portion'- I4 `ofthebase. The=oilwill then pass throughthe conduit IB and up through the opening Il of the base and is usually discharged downwardly through central opening I8 through conduit to the conduit 22 and return 23. Recess I5 has opening I9 leading therefrom which connects by means of bore 2| with the opening 23. A by-pass valve 24 operated by spring .25 serves to control conduit I3, 2| connecting the recess from which the entrance conduit I6 leads and the discharge conduit 23 so that should too great a pressure exist on the supply side from that present on the return side the valve 24 will' open and permit the oil to by-pass into the discharge 23. This spring control is of such a character that the valve usually opens upon a diierential of four pounds pressure which almost always exists at the commencement of iiow of oil through the engine. The valve does not close readily due to fluctuations of pressure and because of the fact that once it becomes open it is dilicult for it to again close due to the fact' that the pressure keeps it open. It is of course understood that the iiow may be in the reverse direction through the base from the flow above described, whereby the oil may pass through the A cartridge in a reverse direction.
Mountedupon the base is the adapter I I which consists of a body portion 50 having a rib 3| to enter the recess 29 in the base which was formerly occupied by the cylindrical casing. This adapter is also provided with a bore 32 which is central with respect to the annular rib 3| hand accommodates aA bolt 33 equipped with an axial bore 34 controlled by `a ball valve 35 operatedv by a spring 35 held within the larger bore 31 and closed by the tubular `member 3S having opening 33 therein. Located alongside the bore 32 Aand its bolt 33, there is a bore I5 providing a valve seat il and a ball closure valve 132 which is urged by means of spring #I3 onto the seat. A tubular closure member l5 forms an -abutment forY the spring and also by means of its opening provides access to the bore. The bolt 33 threads into the central bore 2S of the base to fasten vthe adapter thereto with the rib 3| in the recess 29 forcing the same against a packing 116.
By means of the offset arrangement the adapter may be bound in any one of a variety of angular positions for accommodation of the casing in any one of a variety of angular positions.
Any liquid which has heretofore been delivered to the opening Il will now be delivered through the opening l5 in the adapter at one side of bolt 33, both of these being located closely adjacent one another, as indicated in Fig. 6. Should the flow have been in through the center at I8 oil would enter through opening 39.
The adapter is provided with a cylindrical wall portion IVI which is provided with a recess 48 at its upper edge for the reception of the Wall 5!) `of the cylindrical casing I2. A central tube 5I is threaded into an opening 52 in the boss 55 of the adapter and held in position by the lock nut 53, there being a washer 55 between the nut and the boss 55. This tube provides for the discharge of the filtrate oil from the casing and connects with a discharge conduit 56 formed as a bore in the adapter and enlarged as at 5l to provide for a threaded nipple or a like connection t0 a discharge 4conduit so that the discharge oil does not pass through the base. y
A lter cartridge 53 having its cylindrical wall 59 perforated is provided with a central opening .having anperforated wall` as at 6I, which central'opening receivesthe centra-l tube 5I With an annular space thereabout and with openings 62 leading into it. Cork washers 65 and 64 about the tube 5| seal the annular space at the center of the cartridge so that oil entering either through the passages 33 or 45 must pass through the cartridge lter medium $5 to the annular space to pass through the opening 62 and down to the discharge tube 6| and thence out through conduit 56. The casing I2 is held in position on the central tube 5| by means of a bolt 65 threaded into the tube 5| which forces this casing down into the recess 18 and against the packing therein and at the same time causes a spring 61 located about the guide collar 53 and also about the tube 5I to vforce the sealing member 54 down into rm engagement with the cartridge while also forcing A.the cartridge iirmly against the washer 63 supported vby nut 53.
In this manner the pressure is entirely relieved on the by-pass existent in the base and a stronger spring 25 may be utilized for holding the valve'ZfI closed and preventing any chattering of the same and yet allowing action of the by-pass shouldthe pressure build up beyondv a certain desired amount indicating a congestion o'f` the lter cartridge. It will thus be apparent that the adapter is bound upon the .base independently of the casing and the casing is bound upon lthe adapter independently of the base being itself bound upon the base and so arranged as to receive oil and pass it from the outside inwardly through the cartridge with the free unrestricted discharge therefrom.
The foregoing description is directed solely towards the construction illustrated, but'I desire it to be understood that I reserve the privilege of resorting to all the mechanical changes to which the device is susceptible, the invention being defined and limited only by the ter-ms of the appended claims.

In'a lter, a filter Ibase having inlet and. outlet conduits for connection into a circulating uid system, a casing above the base and detachably secured in place with respect thereto, an adapter member located between' said base land casing, said adapter member comprising a `body portion having annular portions projecting outwardly from opposite side faces thereof, one of said annular portionsbeing axially offset relative to the other and' serving to locate said adapter with reference to said base, the other of said annular portions to locate said casing with reference' to the adapter, an opening in said vadapter centrally of each of said annular portions, a hollow `coupling extending through one of said openings to form a conduit for inlet of uid to said casing from said inlet conduit in said base and to secure said -adapter to said base, and a central discharge conduit leading from the interior of said `casing and communicating with the other of said openings in the adapter member for separate` discharge of the ltered Iiuid independently of the outlet conduit in saidbase.

In a filter, a filter base having inlet and outlet conduits for connection into a circulating fluid system, .a casing above the base and detachably secured in place with respect thereto, an adapter member located between said 'base and casing, said adapter member -comprising a body portion having annular portions projecting outwardly from opposite side faces thereof, one of said annular `portions being axially oiset relative to the other and serving to locate said adapter with reference to said base, the other of said annular portions to locate said 4casing with reference to the adapter, an opening in said adapter centrally of each of said annular portions, a bolt having an axial bore extending through one of said openings to form a conduit for inlet of fluid to said casing from said inlet conduit in said base and to secure said adapter to said base, resilient valve means in said bore controlling fluid communication -between said casing and said base, and a central discharge conduit leading from the interior of said casingand communicating with the other of said openings in the adapter member for separate discharge of the filtered iiuid independently of the outlet -conduit in said base.

In combination, a lter base having inlet and outlet conduits for connection into a circulating fluid system, a casing above said base and detachably secured in place with respect thereto, and an adapter member between said base and casing, said adapter member comprising a body portion having annular Wall portions projecting outwardly from opposite side faces of said body portion, one of said annular wall portions serving to locate said adapter with reference to said base and the other of said annular portions to locate said casing with reference to the adapter, said wall portions having their axes offset with respect to each other, one of said wall portions also having an inlet opening through said body portion centrally of said wall portion, the other of said wall portions being provided with an outlet opening centrally thereof, a hollow removable tubular coupling engaging in the end of the inlet conduit of said base and extending through said inlet opening `of the adapter'member to hold said casing and said adapter in liquid-tight engagement and to provide communication between the interior of said casing and said inlet conduit in said base, a valvein said hollowcouplin'gtoprevent` return of fluid through said cou adapter into said outlet conduit in said base, andl a discharge conduit leading from the interior of said` casing and. communicating with said outlet opening for discharge of fluid therein.

An oil filtery comprising a lter base having inletand outlet conduits for connection into a circulating oil system, the conduits having upwardly extending openings, said base having an upper flange portion with an annular recess at its upper edge of a size to normally t and seal the end of a1 casing of one size, an adapter member having an annular rib projecting outwardly from one side face andv ofl a size to iit said recess in the base, said adapter member also having a cylindrical wall portion axially onset from the axis of said rib and projecting outwardly from the opposite side face of said adapter member with an annular recess in the upper edge of said wall portionof a size to iit a casing of a different size, aninlet opening through said adapter and central of said annular rib, a bolt having an axial bore to form an inlet of iiuid to said casing from said inlet conduit in said base, said bolt extending through the inlet opening in said annular member and securing the same to said base and in communication with the inlet conduit thereof, an outlet opening in said adapter located centrally of said cylindrical wall portion thereof, a casing above said base and detachably secured in place in said upper recess in said wall portion of said adapter member, said casing being open at the bottom for inlet of oil from said bolt, filtering material within said casing, and a central discharge conduit extending upwardly through said filtering material and communicat.. ing at its lower end with said outlet opening in said adapter to provide a separate discharge for the filtered oil independently of the outlet conduit in said base'.

In combination, a filter base having an enlarged annular portion, a cylindrical casing, and an adapter member located between said base and said casing for mounting the latter on said base, said adapter having an enlarged annular portion of a size to lit said enlarged annular portion of said base and locate and laterally retain said adapter thereon, and another enlarged annular portion of a size to receive and laterally retain said casing on said adapter and to axially onset said casing from said base in the assembled position of the parts.
8. In combination, a filter base having an enlarged annular portion, a cylindrical casing, and
an adapter member located between said base and said casing for mounting the latter on said base, said adapter having an enlarged annular portion of asize to fit said enlarged annular portion of said base and locate and laterally retain said adapter thereon, and another enlarged annular portion of a size to receive and laterally retain said casing on said adapter and to axially offset said casing from said base in the assembled position of the parts, said adapter member being movable on said b-ase about said enlarged annular portions of said base and the adapter into different adjusted positions to vary the extent and direction of offset of the casing with respect to said base.

In combination, a filter base having an annular portion oi a size to locate and laterally retain a cylindrical casing of one size, a casing of a size different than would normally t on said annular portion of the base, and an adapter member located between said base and casing, said adapter having an annular part of a size to locate and laterally retain the adapter on the annular portion of said base, and another annular part of a size to locate and laterally retain the casing on the first annular part of the adapter, said annular locating parts of the adapter being so disposed relative to each other that the casing Will be axially offset from said base when said casing and adapter member are mounted in assembled position on said base.

In combination, a filter base having an annular recess of a size to receive and laterally retain a cylindrical casing of one size, a casing of a size different than Would normally lit on said annular portion of the base, and an adapter member located between said base and casing, said adapter having an annular projection on one side of a size to fit into said annular casing-receiving recess on the base, an annular recess: on the opposite side of said adapter centrally offset from the center of said annular projection and of a size to receive and laterally retain said casing on the adapter and to axially offset said casing from said base when said casing and adapter member are mounted in assembled position on said base.
11. In combination, a lter base having an annular recess of a size to receive and laterally retain the open end of a cylindrical casing of one size, a cylindrical casing having an open end of a size different than would normally fit inside of said recess of the base, and an adapter member carried by said base and located between the base and said casing for supporting the latter, said adapter having on one side an enlarged annular projection of a size to t into and be laterally retained by the annular recess in said iilter base, and having on the other side an enlarged annular recess of a size to receive and laterally retain the open end of said casing, means for detachably securing said casing to said adapter, and means independent of said casing-securing means for detachably securing said adapter to said base, said adapter securing means having no attachment to said casing.
