Patented Feb. 24, 1942 UNITED STATES PAT ENT' OFFICE ASH TRAY SNUFFER.
Angelo Napolillo; Chicago, Ill;
Application. April22, 1940.,Serial No. 330;8611 6 Claims. (or. 131-2 37) This invention has as its. principal object the V provision of means for extinguishing; cigarettes and the like. and: adapted especially to the use. in connection with an. ashtray or similar receptacle.
A further object is the provision of an ashtray snuffer comprising coacting clamping members operable to. be spread to receive a lighted ciga Yet another object is. the arrangement of the coacting clamping members, on a rockable mounting. on they ashtray such that snufier may be rocked into a cigarette receiving position and be pressedv against the ashtray to: effect, an, opening of. the clamping jaws thus facilitatingthemanipulationof thedevice. v i
A still. further object is the construction of the. snuffer and particularly the clamping parts thereof to simulate certain. features of an animal or other creature, certain parts of. the. clamping members representing portions of the physicg'noe my or head of the animal or creature.
Other objects and; novel aspects of the invention reside in certain details of construction. of
the component-parts thereof as. well as the ap- I pearance and functional peculiarities of the: preferred structure, all of which will appear more particularly as, the following description proceeds in. view of the. annexed. drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective on one form of combination ashtray and snuffer;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary vertical section along lines 2.-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3' is a fragmentary horizontal section in the direction. of lines 3--3 of. Fig. 2;. Fig. 4 is a perspective detailof the: snufier or clamping jaws with portions broken, away; while Fig. 5 is an exploded perspective of the coacting clamping members.
the particular embodiment. shown. the; post portion hasbeen designed to, represent the forepart of an animals body with forepaws, l3: projecting into the. tray.
The upper part of the post H is. bifurcated to provideopposite, trunnion portions M (Fig, 3). in the. region adjoining the animalf's neck. The representation of the animal or other creature is completedv by providing ahead generally indicatedat. l5. having a neck portion I6 which is. pivotally mounted between the trunnion M by: pin means, IT.
The head portion l5v of; the; animal constitutes the. snuffer proper and. is constructed. from a stampingsuch as shown? in Figs. 4 and. 5 particularly... the; stamping being, preferably hollow or of a. shape so. as. to include a bottom part I8 flanked by opposite tapering side; walls IS. with oppositely positioned intermediate projection I366 forming the neck of. the animal.
The; snufling, mechanism. includes the head portionv I5 as one of a pair ofcoacting; clamping jaws, and a relatively movable jaw or clamp in the. form of, a strip 20 (Figs. 2 and 5'particu1arly) having opposite offset ear 2| between its ends and each provided with an arcuate pivot slot 22, there being also a transverse slot 23 between the ears and attached to fit more or less loosely over a lug 24, on the inside of the head portion of clamp illustrated in Fig. 2'. In assembly relation '21., pin 25 is passed through the opposite side [9 of the head clamp and through the arcuate slots 22 in the moveable; clamp, there beinga spring 26 fitted on a. pin 21 seated in theside wall portions. H! which normally urges 1 the moveable clamp member 20 into clamping relationship against the. bottom l8 of the head. as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 4.
One of the features of the invention resides in the; provision. of. a shiftable pivot. 22-25 for the. moveable clamp. whereby the latter may be spread to extend approximately in parallelism with. the. bottom portion I 8' of the, complementary clamp or head part to receive. the cigarette butt and to effect a substantial uniform clamping of the butt. throughout its length against the com.- plementary or relatively stationary bottom clamping portion l8; In this way the passage of air. through the butt. from either end is effective.-
ly prevented and. moreover variations in diameter as well as other. differences in variou brands of. cigarettes. are likewise accounted for.
A. further feature of the. invention. resides in the construction or formation of. the. various. parts of the snuffer to simulate an animal or other creature. It is observed in Fig. 1 that the extendin part 20a of the moveable clamp is de-v signed in relation with a similar part |8a of the head stamping to represent the animals ears, the lower parts of the stamping indicated generally at I8b representing the animals mouth, which is adapted to rest on the bottom of the tray when the snufier is rocked into snuffing position. Moreover, the spring mounting pin 21 has been properly situated to designate the animal's eyes.
Yet another feature of novelty resides in the mounting of the coacting snufiing members so that the same may be rocked back into upright position as illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 1
condition so that the cigarette butt may simply be dropped into place. It may be observed here that the lug 24 constitutes not only a rest and stop for the cigarette butt, but also prevents passage of ashes or the like through the snuffer when the same is rocked into receiving position.
It is intended that the lighted end of the butt shall be uppermost adjacent the mouth portion lab of the snufier so that when the latter is rocked back into normal full-line position as shown in Fig. 1, any protruding portion of the lighted end of the butt will be pressed against the bottom of the tray and be disintegrated to scatter the glowing particles and effect further extinction consequent upon this additional cutting ofi of air to the butt.
It will be appreciated that the snuffer may take other forms than that chosen for purposes of illustration herein and that the objects and advantages of the invention may be realized by variations of the particular construction discussed herein without departing from the essential novelty of the disclosure, it being the intention that all such variations and forms of the device shall be included within the scope of the patented claims.
Having thus described my invention, what are spread, said jaws cutting off passage of air through the butt by clamping action to extinguish the same.
