' GOPYHOLDER Filed April 1, 1940 k- //\9 f/J Il y I l ATTORNEYS.
Patented Feb. 17, 1942 UNITED g' STATE COPYHOLDER Mark D. Moore, Bloomington, Ind.
Application April 1, 1940, Serial No. 327,337
(Cl. .Z4-66) 1 Claim.
kThis invention relates to copyholders, the primary object of the invention being to provide a device of this character which may be readily positioned on a` supporting surface, such as a desk or table, and in an upright position to the end that the copying may be accomplished with facility and without strain on the eyes of the person using the device.
An important object of the invention is to provide a copyholder of this character having means to securelyy clamp the sheet containing the printed matter being copied, to the end that the copy `will be held at the proper angle for copying.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a clamp for clamping the work to the board, the clainp being so arranged that it may be held in its open position, permitting the sheets of paper or work containing the material to be copied, to be slid under the clamp with both hands.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein described, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing: Figure 1 is a plan View of a copyholder construeted in accordance with the invention. Figure 2 is a side elevational view thereof.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3-3 y of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is av sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Figure 1, and illustrating the clamp as held in its open position.
Figure 5 is a sectional view similar to Figure with the exception that the operating lever is shown as engaging the stop, restricting movement of the operating rod.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the copyholder comprises a support 5 which is in the of the clamp 6, as clearly shown by Figure 1 of the drawing, so that the easel member I may swing outwardly or inwardly, with respect to the support 5. I
As shown, the ends 8 are slightly offset, so that a clearance isprovided to allow the easel member 1. to move into close engagement with the support 5.
cushioning membersv 9 are provided on the easel member, and are adapted Ato contact'with the surface on which the copyholder is positioned, to insure against the copyholder marring or damaging the surface of the desk or table on which the device is positioned.
As clearly shown by Figure l of the drawing, the clamp 6 is formed with cut-away portions I0 for the reception of the righi; angled ends II of the clamp I2, which is in the form of a rod having its ends bent to t within the clamp 6, for pivotal movement with respect to the clamp 6.
Intermediate the ends of the clamp I2, is an offset portion I3 providing a nger piece whereby the clamp I 2 may be raised. Spring members indicated at I4 have their upper ends secured under the front edge of the clamp 6, the free ends of the spring members resting on the clamp I2, normally urging the clamp towards the support or board 5, to clamp an article between the member I2 and support or board 5.
An operating rod indicated at I5 is pivotally mounted in the bearings I6 secured to the clamp 6, the operating rod being formed with an offset end portion I'I providing a lever whereby the rod I5 may be rotated. The oiset portion cooperates with the right angled end I8 of the operating rod I5 in raising the clamp I2, as it will be seen that the right angled end I8 engages one end of the clamp4 I2.
A stop indicated at I9 is formed on the clamp 6, and is disposed in the path of travel of the offset portion I1 of the rod I5, when the rod I5 is moved to its elevated position, elevating the `clamp I2 so thatsheets or pages may be positioned under the clamp I2.
A ringer piece indicated at 20 is formed on one `end of the offset portion I'I, so that the person using the copyholder, may readily move the rod I5 to raise or release the clamp I2.
Fromthe foregoing it will be seen that due to the construction shown and described, I have provided a copyholder which may be readily positioned on a desk or table for supporting material to be copied. The copyholder will support; the pages or sheets at the desired angle to permit copying of the material with facility.
What is claimed is:
A copyholder comprising a support embodying a board, a substantially U-shaped vclamp fitted over one end of the board and having cutout portions, a clamping jaw embodying a length of heavy wire material of substantially U formation, the ends of the clamping jaw extending through the cut-out portions and disposed laterally, the laterally extended ends beingpivotally 10 held between said U-.shaped clamp and end of the board, said clamping jaw overlying the support and adapted to clamp an article on the
