Application January 3, 1940, serial N01' 312,204'
. 3 claims. k(ol. .3d-233)I Thisk invention relates to scissorsV and has'k for its main object the provision of a pair of scissors constructed and arranged to prevent accidental injury to the users thereof.
Another object of the invention is to provide safety scissors in which the safety feature results from the addition of a simple and inexpensive part to scissors of conventional construction. Said part can be formed integral with a part of the conventional scissors or can be initially separate and secured in position, either removably or non-removably.
The scissors of the present invention is designed primarily for use thereof with safety by children, but, of course, the principle of the invention is likewise applicable to scissors or shears intended to be used by adults.
In accordance with the present invention the scissors provided with the safety feature is designed to eliminate the usual V-opening between the cutting edges of the scissor blades when the latter are in wholly or partly open position, thus eliminating the possibility of the users finger or other part of the person getting caught between said cutting edges and injured when the blades are operated. Instead of said V-opening which varies in size depending upon the extent to which the blades are opened in operating the scissors, there is provided in the scissors a narrow slot of fixed width, in which the material to be cutis inserted for engagement by the cutting edges of the scissor blades. Said slot is sufficiently wide to permit the cutting operation on the material inserted in said slot, but is narrow enough to prevent engagement of the users finger or other part of the latters person with the cutting edges of the scissor blades. v
In the accompanying drawing I have illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention and by reference thereto and to the following description the invention will be clearly understood.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a view in elevation of one side of the scissors, the companion blades being in open position;
Fig. 2 is a view similar other side of the scissors;
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig./ l, blades in closed position; g
Fig. 4 is a sectional view,on an enlarged scale, on the line 4--4 of Figfl.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, the scissors I embodying the present invention comprises the blades I2 and I4 pivoted together at to Fig. 1 showiagth with the I6 and provided with handles I8 and 28, respec- 55 tively. ,BladewIZ isprovided with'a beveled cutting edge`22 which cooperates with a beveled out: ting edge'2'4 on companion blade I4 in the usual way.
The scissors is provided with means to obstruct the opening between the cutting edges of the scissor blades except a narrow slot in which the material is inserted for engagement by said cutting edges in the cutting operation. Thus, for this purpose blade I4 has a plate extension 26 which is preferably integral as shown but which can, of course, be separately formed and secured in position to said blade. A slot 28 is provided in blade I4 and the plate 26 thereof and extends longitudinally of the cutting edge 24 which defines one side of said slot. Said cutting edge confronts the other side of said slot. The inner surface of blade I2 lies, with slight clearance, close to the adjacent surface 3| of plate 26. Said surface 3| of .plate 26 is offset slightly from the surface 3Ia of blade I4 which is slidably engaged by the surface 3Ib of blade I2. The ends 30 and 32 of blades I2 and I4, respectively, are rounded as shown, and the outer end 34 of plate 26 being preferably formed as a continuation of the rounded edge of blade I4. Preferably, as shown, said ends of the blades do not project beyond end 34 of plate 26. An offset 36 is formed on plate 26 in position to be engaged by the outer end portion of blade I2 and provides an abutment stop to limit the opening movement of the scissor blades.
Thus it is seen that the scissors herein shown or described is well adapted to accomplish th/e/f/ objects of the present invention. It will/be understood, however, that While I. haveshown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, the scissors having Vthe safety feature of the present invention/may be constructed otherwise than as herelspecically illustrated or described. Therefore, I do not wish to be limited to the construction herein specifically disclosed except 'as/may be required by the scope of the appended claims.
/Ha'ving thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. Safety scissors comprising a pair of pivoted scissor blades having opposed cutting edges, respectively, operating handles carried by said blades at one side of the pivotal connection between said blades, and means carried by one of said blades independently of the pivotal connection between said blades, said means having an edge confronting the cutting edge of said last mentioned blade in xed spaced relation thereto and defining therewith a narrow slot open at the end of the scissors which is at the other side of the pivotal connection between said blades, said means overlapping the other of said blades to obstruct the opening between said blades when the latter are opened, except for said slot in which the material to be cut can be inserted through said open end of the slot for engagement by said cutting edges in the cutting operation.
2. Safety scissors comprising a pair of pivoted scissor blades having opposed cutting edges, respectively, operating handles carried by said blades at one side of the pivotal connection between said blades, and means integral with one of said blades and having an edge confronting the cutting edge of said last mentioned blade in spaced relation thereto to provide a slot extending longitudinally of the cutting edge of said last mentioned blade, said slot having an openend at the end of the scissors which is at the other side of the pivotal connection between said blades, said means overlapping the other of said blades to obstruct the opening between said blades when the latter are opened, except for said slot in which the material to be cut can be inserted through said open end of the slot for engagement by said cutting edges in the cutting operation.
3. Safety scissors comprising a pair of pivoted scissor blades having opposed cutting edges, respectively, operating handles carried by said blades at one side of the pivotal connection between said blades, and a plate integral with one of said blades, there being a slot formed in said last mentioned blade and plate extending longitudinally of the cutting edge of the blade, said slot having an open end at the end of the scissors which is at the other side of the pivotal connection between said blades, the cutting edge of said last mentioned blade confronting one side of said slot, said plate overlapping the other of said blades to obstruct the opening between said blades when the latter are opened, except for said slot in which the material to be cut can be nserted through said open end of the slot for engagement by said cutting edges in the cutting operation.
