10 Claims.
My invention relates to display members, commonly called counter-shams, that are placed on the counters or display tables of stores and, more particularly; to clips for positioning the glass or other partitions between adjacent countersharns or between the endmost counter-shams and the marginal retaining wall of the counter.
My invention has for its principal objects a counter-sham and a clip therefor, which will permit the use of narrow partitions between adjacent counter-shams and between the endmost counter-shams and the marginal retaining walls of the counter; which will hold these partitions firmly, which will also retain the partitions extendingtransversely across the counter-shams thereby eliminating the use of additional clips to holdthe partitions between adjacent countershams and between the endmost counter-shams and the marginal retaining walls; and which maybe economically manufactured.
I The invention consists principally in providing Y-shaped clips having jaws in the branches thereof for holding transverse counter-sham partitions with a flanged retaining member on the opposite side thereof for holding partitions between adjacent counter-sh'ams and between the endmost counter-shams and the marginal retaining wall of 'a counter.

Fig. 10 is a sectional view taken on the line Hi -l0 in Fig, 9, I
Fig. 11 is a sectional view taken on the line Hll in Fig. 9,
Fig. 12 is a front view of a modified form of clip; and
Fig. 13 is a side view of the clip' shown in Fig.
In Fig. 1 of the drawings, there is illustrated an ordinary display counter I having the customary marginal retaining Walls 2 extending therearound and marginal walls 3 of glass or other suitable material extending longitudinally of the counter and marginal end walls-4 of glass or other suitable material extending across the ends of the counter, said glass walls being higher than the retaining walls 2. Extending transversely across'the counter and of a length equal to the width between the glass side walls are countershams indicated generally by S. Partition walls 5 of glass or other suitable material are held between adjacent shams.
The drawings illustrate a sham side rail and cover construction which is shown in my Patent No. 2,120,653 dated June 14', 1938. As shown, the individual counter-sham construction comprises side rails 6 held together by suitable cross memhers I that are secured to the sides by nails 8 or other suitable means. The outer faces of the side rails have alternating vertical grooves 9 and ribs I0, the grooves 9 of the side rails 6 being arranged in transverse alinement. Longitudinal strips ll of fiber, metal or any other suitable material extend along the upper portion of the side rails and project thereabove, the projecting portions of said strips forming a guide and retaining means for a cover member I2 which rests on said side rails and thereby dispenses with means for fastening the cover to the rails. These strips are held in place by tacks or nails l3 driven into the ribs IU of the side rails.
Y-shaped clips [4 similar to clips shown in my pending application for patent for Oounter-sham partition clip, Serial No. 326,887, filed March 30, 1940, and special Y-shaped clips l5 are provided for supporting inclined counter-sham partitions H5 at the points desired. The partitions may be of glass or any other suitable material. Each of the sham partitions is supported by a pair of opposed clips I4 and I5 held in opposed grooves 9 in the side rails, special clips I5 being used adjacent to the retaining wall and clips l4 being used opposite said special clips IS on said sham. Special clips 15 are used on the corresponding side of each sham and clips M are also used on the same side of each sham so that adjacent clips of adjacent shams comprise a clip l4 and a special clip 15. I
The Y-shaped clips l4 comprise a stem l1, an
angular portion l8 and branches I9 diverging therefrom. The end portions of said branches [9 are provided with jaws 20 projecting inwardly for supporting the partitions l6, each clip being adapted to support two oppositely inclining partitions.
The special clips l5 are generally similar to Y-shaped clips l4 having a stem 2!, an angular portion 22 and branches 23 diverging therefrom. The end portions of said branches 23 are provided with jaws 24 projecting inwardly for supporting the partitions l6, each clip being adapted to support two oppositely inclining partitions. Special clips I5 further have a flanged retaining member 25 secured to the rear side of said clip by means of a rivet 26 through said angular portion 22, this retaining member forming a jaw or channel for supporting vertical partitions 5 between adjacent counter-shams and marginal end walls 4 between the endmost shams and the counter retaining wall 2.
The stem 1! and 2! of clips 14 and i5, respectively, extend'into the side rail grooves 9, said stems being substantially the same width as the grooves and also being of angular cross-section whereby the stems engage the inner faces of the strips and the angular portions [3 and 22 adjacent to the stems wedging in the grooves, thereby maintaining the jaws 20 and 24 of the clips I4 and !5, respectively, a suitable distance above the cover member so that the lower edge of the bottom of each partition l6 abuts against the cover and the upper edge of the bottom of each partition abuts against the upper bottom edge of the adjacent oppositely inclining partition.
The hereinbefore described invention has numerous advantages. The flanged retaining member 25 of the special clip l5 cooperates with the branches 23 thereof to form a jaw or channel for supporting the vertical partitions 5 between adjacent shams S and the marginal end walls 4 between the endmost shams and the marginal retaining wall 2. Use of these special clips eliminates the use of additional clips for supporting these partitions and walls, and also permits the use of narrower partitions 5 and marginal end walls 4 by reason of the fact that they do not have to extend to the bottom of the counter. This results in considerable savings of material.
Figs. 12 and 13 showa modified form of clip generally indicated by 21. This clip is straight having a stem 28 of angular cross-section and a jaw 29 on the upper portion therefor for supporting a partition. Secured to the rear of said clip by a rivet 30 is a flanged retaining member 34 forming a channel or jaw for supporting a partition 5 between adjacent shams or the marginal end walls 4.
The modification shown in Figs. 9, l and 11 is similar to the arrangement described above except that in this modification, clips 21 are used in place of special clips I and clips 32 are used in place of clips Hi, clips 32 being plain straight clips similar to clips 21 except that they do not have the flanged retaining member 3| secured to the rear thereof.
Obviously, numerous modifications may be made and I do not wish to be limited to the precise construction shown.
What I claim is:
