UNITED STATES PATENT OEEicE.
WILLIAM A. COOKE, JR., OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 227,098, dated May 4, 1880.
Application filed 'March 6, 1880, (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LWILLIAM A. COOKE, Jr., of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Memorandum-Book Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in fastening memorandum -books, tablets, and other blank or printed pages to covers or backs for the same; and the object of the in vention is to furnish a fastener which will confine the memorandum-book securely to the back or cover, and at the same time will permit it to be quickly and easily attached to and detached from the cover or back.
The invention consists, first, of a metal fastener attached to the back or cover having a projecting flange, which is bent down so as to press on the book, and a metal rib on the bottom plate for taking hold of the bound end of the book, and thereby prevent it from being drawn out from the fastener.
It consists, secondly, in providing the under side of the bound end of the book with a groove or recess to receive the metal rib of the fastener.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a plan view of the memorandumbook and fastener with the cover open. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same, taken on line m a: of Fig. l. Fig. 3 represents aplan View of the under side of the memorandum-- book, showing the groove or recess for the rib of the fastener; and Fig. et is a cross-section of Fig. l, taken on line y y, showing also a front view of the fastener.
Referring to the drawings, A A are the side covers of the book, hinged together by a flexible back, B. Adjacent to the iiexible back B, and parallel to the same, is placed the fastener C, composed of a top plate, a, bottom plate, b, and upright portion or plate d, connecting plates a b at one side, made from a single piece of sheet metal.
The fastener is applied to the cover by placing its bottom plate, b, thereon, and fastening it either by rivets passed through it and the cover, or by providing the said plate with prongs, and passing them through the cover 5o and clinching them against the opposite side,
or in any other convenient or efficient manner.
yess
d is a rib, formed on the bottom plate of the n fastener by stamping up the said plate, or in -formed at about the middle of the bottom plate, b.
The top plate, a, has its freeedge bent downward slightly, as shown, for the purpose of forming a spring-lip, c, which presses on the upper side of the book just beyond the binding f,- but the lip c may be dispensed with.
D represents tlie memorandum-book, formed of any number of leaves joined together at one end, which end is covered with the bindine f In the bound end of the book a recess or groove, h, having parallel sides and closed ends, is formed by cutting through the binding and into the stock, so as to remove a portion of the material. This recess or groove h is parallel to the end of the book and of about the same length as the rib d.
The manner of fastening the book to the cover or back is as follows: The book D is turned over parallel to the cover A, and with the groove h downward. When in this position the bound end of the book is inserted, on one side or the other, between the top and bottom plates, a b, of the fastener, and with f the end close to and parallel with the plate d. In this position the book is pushed sidewise across the cover-say in the direction of the arrow l, Fig. l. The top plate, a, rises or springs sufficiently to allow the end to pass freely under it, and also to allow the said end to rise up on the rib d. The recess h being in line with the rib d', when the end of the book is inserted between the top and bottom plates 0f the fastener the rib passes into the said recess as the book is pushed in, and as soon as the inner end of the recess passes the far end of the rib from the side on which the book is entered the rib drops into the recess, and the lip e presses down on the book and holds it in place in the manner shown in Fig. 2.
rIhe pressure of the top plate, a, combined with the hold which the rib takes on the book by means of its position in the recess h, prevents the book from slipping out from the fastener in the direction of its length, while the rib d', by its ends abutting against the ends of IOC the recess h, prevents the book from slipping out sidewise. At the same time, however, the elasticity of the top plate, a, and of the bound end of the book, by yielding when the proper amount of force is exerted, allows the book to be drawn or disconnected from the fastener without injury to it or to the fastener.
The lip c of the top plate, a, in addition to clasping the book downward and binding it against the edge of the bottom plate, d, serves also as a cutting-edge, again st which the leaves ofthe book are torn off, and also as a guidingedge for severing the leaves.
I do not wish to confine myself to the use of the fastener in connection with memorandum-V books, or in connection with double covers or sides, as it is equally applicable to backs or boards for holding blank-paper tablets, bound sheets of writing-paper, and other packages of paper when they are provided with a recess or groove, h, in the bound end, and I do not, therefore, limit myself to the exact form of the fastener G herein described, as any fastener which is adapted to receive the bound end of the memorandum-book D, or other similar article, and hold it through the connection it forms with it by means of the recess h, can be used in place of the specific construction of fastener shown.
kthe cover A, of the fastener C, provided with a top plate, a, and rib d', and the book D, provided with the recess h, substantially as described.
5. As a new article of manufacture, a book, D, provided with a channel or groove,.h, on one side only, saidr groove having parallel sides and closed ends, to adapt the said book to be applied to and held by a suitable fastener, in the manner substantially as described.
