This invention relates to drilling apparatus, and more yparticularly has reference to an mprovedV spray guard for intercepting the spray thrown off from the rapidly rotating drill rod at the mouth of the drill hole.
In rotary drilling apparatus, particularly that of the high speed diamond bit type, it is necessary to provide a steady flow of a relatively large quantity of water through the rod line to the drill bit to wash away the cuttings and to cool the bit. The mixture of water and cuttings at the bottom of the drill hole forms a sludge and the slugge-laden water emerges from the mouth of the drill hole as a steady stream, and the rapidly rotating drill rod throws off a portion of the water stream in the form of an undesirable spray. It is extremely important, particularly when drilling holes inclined upwardlywith respect to the horizontal, to provide some suitable means for intercepting this spray as rapidly as it is created, so that it will be made to join the main stream in flowing down the Working face or discharge through a suitable conduit to a suitable point of disposal.
A primary object of the present invention is to provide improved means for intercepting the water spray formed at the mouth of the drill hole by the rapidly rotating drill rod. Another object is to provide an improved detachable spray guard adapted for association with a rod line of a driling apparatus for intercepting the spray formed at the mouth of the drill hole. A further object is to provide an improvedv spray guard adapted for association with the rod line of a rotary drilling apparatus for intercepting the sludge-laden water as it emerges from the mouth of the drill hole and for conducting the water to; a convenient point of disposal. Yet another object is to provide improved means for securing the spray guard within a counterbore at the hole mouth. Other objects and advantages of the invention will, however, hereinafter more fully appear.
In the accompanying drawings there are shown forpurposes of illustration two forms which the invention may assume in practice.

In both illustrative embodiments of the invention the improved. spray guard is shown associated with a rotary drilling apparatus of the high speed diamond bit type which may be similar to that disclosed in my copending application Serial No. 268,792, filed April 19, 1939. It Will be. evident, however, that the invention may be associated with drilling apparatus of various other types.
The drilling apparatus herein disclosed comprises a motor I for rotating a drill rod chuck 2, said motor carried by a control head 3 which is in turn supported by an element of a hydraulic feeding means 4. The hydraulic feeding means comprises a feed cylinder 5 containing a feed piston (not shown) and said feed cylinder is slidably mounted in a trunnion support 6, the latter having a swivel plate 1 adapted to be clamped in a saddle mounting of a conventional drill support. Associated with the hydraulic feeding means 4 is a manual feeding means 8 f including a feed screw 9 operated by a hand crank I0. Byv means of this manual feeding means, the feed cylinder 5 may be adjusted into different feeding positions. relative to the drill support. Water may be conducted to the hydraulic feeding means 4 and through the motor shaft to the drill rod chuck 2 from any suitable source through a supply hose II. As the structure of the drilling apparatus disclosed is fully described in the copending application above referred to, further description thereof is unnecessary.
The drill rod chuck 2 of the drilling motor is adapted to receive the shank of either a starting and reaming bit, generally designated I2 in Fig. 2, or a core barrel and bit, generally designated I3 in Fig. 3. The constructions of the starting and reaming .bit and the core bit and barrel are clearly described in my copending application Ser.. No. 349,471, filed' concurrently herewith.
'I'he starting and reaming bit I2 comprises a tubular rod I4 having coupled thereto a tubular bit member I5 carrying an annular diamond bit I6 for forming a starting hole. Formed on the tubular rod I4 and surrounding the tubular bit member I5 is an annular diamond reaming bit I1 for enlarging the starting hole to provide a counterbore. The starting hole is designated I8, and the counterbore I9. The core bit and barrel I3 comprises a tubular rod 20 carrying a corereceiving barrel 2|, the latter having coupled thereto at its forward end a tubular bit member 22 carrying an annular diamond core bit 23. After the starting hole I8 and counterbore I9 have been formed in the working face, the starting and reaming bit shown in Fig. 2 is detached from the drill rod chuck 2 and in its place the core bit and barrel I3 is substituted. The core bit 23 is inserted into the starting hole so that it is adequately guided during the starting of the core drilling operation. When the core bit 23 is inserted in starting position within the starting hole, the improved spray guard is secured in the counterbore I9 in a position surrounding the drill rod at the mouth of the drill hole in a manner to be later explained.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in Figs, 1 to '1, inclusive, the spray guard is generally designated 25 and comprises a guard body 26 having a portion 21 of substantially semi-circular cross section. Projecting downwardly from the portion 21 is a discharge portion 28 to which a discharge hose 29 is coupled as at 30. A wedge is indicated at 3| in Figs. 6 and '1 and comprises a body 32 of substantially semi-circular cross section having a tapered wedge portion 33 and an end flange 34. In use the portion 21 of the spray guard portion is inserted in the lower portion of the counterbore I9 beneath the drill rod in the manner shown in Fig. 3, and the wedge 3l is driven into position in the counterbore above the drill rod to hold firmly the guard in position. The wedge has bottom side surfaces 35 engaging the top side surfaces 36 on the guard body 26 when the wedge is driven into its holding position. The wedge and guard body cooperate to provide an annular chamber 31 surrounding the drill rod, and as the sludge-laden water emerges from the mouth of the drill hole the rapidly rotating rod whirls the water in such manner as to form a spray, and this spray is intercepted by the walls of the chamber 31 and directed downwardly through bottom slots 38 into a discharge passage 39 in the discharge portion 28 of the guard body, and the discharge hose 29 conducts the sludge-laden water from the discharge passage 39 to a suitable point of disposal.
In Figs. 8 and 9 a modied form of spray guard is disclosed, In this construction the spray guard is generally designated 40 and has a circular body 4l provided with a cylindric portion 42 having a tapering end portion 43. Insertible within the counterbore of the starting hole and associated with the portion 43 is a split sleeve 44, desirably internally tapered and expansible into engagement with the walls of the hole counterbore for rmly securing the guard within the counterbore. The guard body encircles the drill rod, and secured as by screws 45 to the guard body are alternating pairs or" metal washers 46 and rubber baffle-like washers 41, the latter having their free inner portions embracing the body of the drill rod in the manner shown in Fig. 8. The guard casing has a bottom discharge opening 48 to which is connected a discharge hose 49. As the sludge-laden water emerges from the mouth of the drill hole, the spray formed by the rapidly rotating rod is intercepted by the walls of a chamber 5|] within the guard body and the water stream is directed downwardly to the discharge opening. The baille-like rubber washers 41 prevent the escape of water along the drill rod from the guard casing.
In both embodiments of the invention the water discharge openings in the guard body may open directly to atmosphere, so that the discharge hose may be omitted. In such a construction, however, the discharge opening would be so arranged as to direct the discharging water against the working face so that the same will flow down the face without forming any appreciable amount of spray. The use of the discharge hose is, however, preferable especially when drilling upwardly inclined holes,
As a result of this invention it will be noted that improved means is provided for intercepting the spray formed at the mouth of the drill hole by the rapidly rotating drill rod of a high speed diamond drill. It will further be evident that by the provision of the improved spray guard the sludge-laden water which emerges from the mouth of the drill hole as a steady stream and is in part in the form of a spray, is intercepted and conducted away from the drill hole to a suitable point of disposal. It will further be evident that the improved spray guard is simple and relatively inexpensive in design and may be readily placed in operative position with respect to a drill rod. Other uses and advantages of the invention will be clearly apparent to those skilled in the art.
While there are in this application specically described two forms which the invention may assume in practice, it will be understood that these forms of the same are shown for purposes of illustration and that the invention may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit or the scope of the appended claims.

In a drilling apparatus including a rotary drill rod carrying a drill bit and means for supplying cleansing liquid to the bit to remove the cuttings from the bottom of the drill hole, means located at the mouth of the drill hole near the working face and surrounding the drill rod for intercepting the spray formed by the liquid thrown off by the drill rod, said spray intercepting means comprising bodily separable parts whereby the same may be removed laterally from the drill rod without removing the latter 'from the drill hole.
2. In a drilling apparatus including a rotary drill rod carrying a drill bit and means for supplying cleansing liquid through the drill rod to the drill bit to wash away the cuttings from the bottom of the drill hole, a spray guard secured within a counterbore at the mouth of the drill hole and surrounding the drill rod for intercepting the spray formed by the liquid thrown off by the drill rod as it emerges from the drill hole, said spray intercepting means comprising bodily separable parts whereby the same may be removed laterally from the drill rod without removing the latter from the drill hole.
3. In a drilling apparatus including a rotary drill rod carrying a drill bit and means for supplying cleansing liquid through the drill rod to the drill bit at the bottom of the drill hole to wash away the cuttings, a receptacle located at the mouth of the drill hole and surrounding the drill rod for receiving the liquid as it emerges from the drill hole, and discharge means for said receptacle, said receptacle having a portion tted within the drill hole and a cooperating wedge portion entering the drill hole and movable bodily relative to said first portion for securing said portions within the drill hole.
4. In combination, in an apparatus for receiving and conducting away sludge-laden spray thrown off by a rapidly rotating bit-carrying rod line, a body providing a casing to surround the rod line outside of the working face and to intercept material thrown off by the latter, said casing having a lateral discharge between the face and its own outermost end, and means for fixing the body upon the face independently of the rod line including an element integral with the body adapted to enter an opening in the face surrounding the rod line and a cooperating relatively longitudinally movable element also adapted to enter such opening, said elements cooperating to provide a spray receiving chamber in said casing and formed to hold said casing on the face with aA wedging action in the opening upon .relative longitudinal movement of said elements in contact with each other.

Cuttings-intercepting means .adapted to be supported on a working face at the mouth of a drill hole for intercepting the cuttings as they are discharged from the drill hole and to be positioned to surround a drill rod which carries a drill bit and has associated with it means for supplying cleansing fluid to the bit to remove the cuttings from the bottom of the hole, said cuttings-intercepting means comprising separable parts for removing the same laterally from the drill rod without removing the drill rod from the drill hole, said separable parts having relative longitudinal bodily movement to effect securing of4 said intercepting means to the working face.
6. Cuttings-intercepting means adapted to be supported on a working face at the mouth of aV drill hole for intercepting the cuttings as they are discharged from the drill hole and to be positioned to surround a drill rod which carries a drill bit and has associated with it means for supplying cleansing fluid to the bit to remove the cuttings from the bottom of the hole, said cuttings-intercepting means comprising separable parts for removing the same laterally from the drill rod without removing the drill rod from the drill hole, said separable parts being provided with cooperating wedge-shaped portions and having relative longitudinal `bodily movement to effect securing of said intercepting means to the working face.
7. Cuttings-intercepting means adapted to be supported on a Working face at the mouth of a drill hole for intercepting the cuttings as they are discharged from the drill hole and to be positioned to surround a drill rod which carries a drill bit and has associated with it means for supplying cleansing iluid to the bit to remove the cuttings from the bottom of the hole, said cuttings-intercepting means comprising separable parts for removing the same laterally from the drill rod without removing the drill rod from the drill hole, said separable parts being provided With cooperating Wedge-shaped portions insertible in a counterbore at the mouth of the drill hole and having relative longitudinal bodily movement to effect securing of said intercepting means to the working face.

Cuttingsdntercepting means adapted to be supported on a working face at the mouth of a drill hole for intercepting the cuttings as they are discharged from the drill hole and to be positioned to surround a drill rod which carries a drill bit and has associated with it means for supplying cleansing fluid to the bit to remove the cuttings from the bottom of the hole, said cuttings-intercepting means compri-sing separable parts for removing the same laterally from ther drill rod without removing the drill rod from the drill hole, said separable parts having plane surfaces contactingin a plane substantially at the longitudinal center of said intercepting means and said surfaces disposed in sliding contact and said separable elements having relative longitudinal bodily movement to effect securing of said intercepting means to the working face.

Cuttings-intercepting means adapted to be supported on a working face at the mouth of a drillhole yfor intercepting the cuttings as they are discharged from the drill hole and to be positioned to surround a drill rod which carries a drill bit and has associated with it means for supplying cleansing liuid to the bit to remove the cuttings from the bottom of the hole, said cuttings-intercepting means Icomprising separable parts for removing the same laterally from the drill rod without removing the drill rod from the drill hole, said separable parts having plane surfaces oontacting in a plane substantially at the longitudinal center of said intercepting means and said surfaces disposed in sliding contact and said separable elements provided with cooperating wedge-shaped portions and having relative longitudinal bodily movement to effect securing of said intercepting means to theworking face.
10. Cuttings-intercepting means adapted to be supported on a working fa-ce at the mouth of a drill hole for intercepting the cuttings as they are discharged from the drill hole and to be positioned to surround a drill rod which carries a drill bit and has associated with it means for supplying cleansing fluid to the bit to remove the cuttings from the bottom of the hole, said cuttings-intercepting means comprising separable parts for removing the same laterally from the drill rod without removing the drill rod from the drill hole, said separable parts having plane surfaces contacting in a plane substantially at the longitudinal center of said intercepting means and said surfaces disposed in sliding contact and said separable elements provided with cooperating wedge-shaped portions and insertible in a counterbore at the mouth of the drill hole and having relative longitudinal bodily movement to effect securing of said intercepting means to the working f-ace.
11. In a drilling apparatus including a rotary drill rod carrying a drill bit and. means for supplying cleansing liquid to the bit to remove the cuttings from the bottom of the drill hole, means located at the mouth of the drill hole near the working face and surrounding the drill rod for intercepting the spray formed by the liquid thrown off by the drill rod, said intercepting means comprising bodily separable parts cooperating to provide a spray receiving chamber in said receiving means, said parts being separable to effect removal of said spray intercepting means laterally from the drill rod Without removing the latter from the drill hole.
