6 Claims.
This invention relates to an improved side line or double pick eliminator for looms and has for an object to provide an improved attachment which may be applied to any desired construction of loom and which will function to eliminate the pulling in of the filling at the selvedge as the loom operates.
Another object is to provide an attachment for a loom wherein means will automatically function, when the loom is operating, to hold all of the lling yarns out of the way while the active shuttle functions.
Another object is to provide an attachment for looms adapted to be applied near the shuttle box and adapted to be automatically actuated by the shuttle box lowering and raising mechanism, when more than one shuttle is used, to hold out of the way all filling threads except the one from the active shuttle.
Another object is to provide an attachment for preventing the lling from the shuttles, which are not in use, from becoming drawn into the cloth or being entangled with each other during the operation of the loom and a flexible rconsection for operating said mechanism through the standard shuttle box operating mechanism of the loom Another object is to provide a device of the character described which is simple in construction and which may be readily attached to a loom without the necessity of providing additional and expensive operating mechanism Another object is to provide a mechanism of the character described with a connection with the standard operating mechanism of the shuttle boxes of the loom so constructed that positive movements of the respective shuttle boxes into operative position will impart direct and positive movement of the spacing means of the attachment which are adapted to cooperatively function with said respective shuttle boxes.
Other objects vand advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and it will be apparent that many Achanges and modifications may be made in the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as expressed in the accompanying claims. We, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction and arrangement of parts shown and described as the preferred form has been shown and described only by way of illustration.
We carry out our invention by arranging at the end of the lay a system of iilling-feelers adapted to raise and hold the iillings above the race-plate While the shuttle from the lower box is thrown back and forth, with the said feelers being operated automatically to rise and fall, as the different shuttle boxes are moved into operative position with the said feeler operating mechanism being operated by a flexible connection with the ordinary shuttle box motion imparting mechanism of the loom.

Referring more particularly to the drawings wherein like characters of reference designate like parts throughout the several views, the device embodying the invention comprises .broadly a pair of brackets I and 2 held in connected relation with each other by a tie rod 3 and a shaft 4. The said brackets I and 2 are connectedl through tie members 5 and 6 to a pair of spaced brackets 'I and 8 having slide slots 9 and I0 therein. The slide slots 9 and lil slidably support a slide bar I I having a tapered cam surface i2 intermediate the ends thereof and a riser surface I 3. The bracket 'I has an arm I4 secured thereto by rivets or bolts I5 adjacent one end of said arm and has a deflected end I6 adjacent its opposite end formed with an opening II- therein. A coil spring or the like I8 having hook-like ends Ii) and 2U is secured adjacent its end I9 in the perforation I I `and adjacent its opposite end 2B in an opening 2| formed in the slide bar II. The spring I8 normally urges the slide bar I I toward the deflected end I 6 of the arm I4. A iiexible strap-like member 22 is secured adjacent the opposite end of the slide bar II by a bolt or the like 23. This flexible straplike member may be formed of canvas, leather or any other suitable material and as shown in Fig. I is adapted to be secured to a chain 24 which forms part of the Standard operating mechanism of the shuttle boxes 26. The flexible strap-like member 22 is connected to said chain 24 by a bolt or the like 25 and the length thereof is so controlled as to move the slide bar II and associated parts thereof the proper amounts during the operation of the shuttle boxes of the loom. The shaft 4 carries a plurality of bearing members .21, 28 and 29. Each of the bearing members is rotatably supported on said shaft and are respectively provided with levers 30, 3| and 32. The said levers are respectively adapted to be urged into engagement with the slide bar I I by a plurality of coil springs 33, 34 and 35. Each of said coil springs is attached adjacent one end thereof to the tie rod 3 and adjacent its opposite end to a hook-like member 36 mounted on each of said bearing members 21, 28 and 29. It is also to be understood that the said levers 36, 3| and 32 may be retained in engagement with the slide bar I I by gravital action depending, of course, upon the weight of said levers. Each of said levers has attached thereto a rod 31 by means of holes and a screw connection or the like 38. Each of said rods 31 is provided with angled fingers 39a, 39h and 39e. The said fingers may be an integral angled portion of the rods 31, as illustrated in Fig. I, or may be separate bar-like members secured in suitable connection bearing members 40 mounted adjacent the upper ends of the respective rods 31. The said rods, as illustrated in Fig. I, may be slidably mounted in a suitable bracket plate 4I attached to the side of the lay 42 of the loom. If desired a suitable bracket plate 43 having a plurality of spacing fingers 44 thereon may be provided for holding the. free ends of the fingers 39 in spaced relation with each other. This bracket plate 43 may be secured to a portion of the loom adjacent the lay 42. The race-plate 45 at the top of the lay 42 is preferably provided with a recess 46 in which the fingers 39 of the respective rods 31 are adapted to move when the levers 30 to 32 inclusive engage the low portion 41 of the slide bar II.
The respective brackets I and 2 are provided with longitudinal slots 48 through which the bolts or connecting like members 49 which secure said tie members and 6 to said brackets extend. This arrangement provides means whereby the brackets I and 2 and the levers 30, 3| and 32 and associated parts carried by said brackets may be raised or lowered to adjust the initial height to which the fingers 39 are moved during the operation of the device. The brackets 1 and 8 have slotted connection end portions 50 by means of which the attachment may be secured beneath the lay 42 as by suitable connection bolts or the like not shown. It is to be noted that the slotted end of the bracket 8 provides means whereby the slide bar may be raised or lowered as desired. This end is connected to a bracket 5I by a bolt or the like 52 and the said bracket 5I is secured beneath the lay by a suitable bolt connection or the like,
A suitable collar 53 is secured to the shaft 4 by a screw or the like 54 to hold the bearing members 21, 28 and 29 in proper position and limits movement thereof in a direction longitudinally of the shaft.
The dash lines 55 show one position of movement of the slide bar II and the dash lines 56 show the position to which the respective rods 38 to 32 inclusive drop as the said bar II is moved in the direction of the arrow 51. This movement is imparted to said slide bar |I through the'flexible connection 22 with the chain 24 of the operating mechanism of the shuttle boxes 26.
The fillings carried by the respective shuttle boxes are illustrated at 58, 59, 60 and 6I. 'I'he filling 58 cornes from the uppermost shuttle box 62, the filling 59 from the shuttle box 63, the filling 68 from the shuttle box 64 and the filling 6I from the lowermost shuttle box 65. The filling 58 extends over the fingers 39a, b and c, the filling 59 extends beneath the finger 39a and over the fingers 39h and c and the filling 60 extends beneath the fingers 39a and b and over the finger 39e. The filling 6I extends beneath al1 of said fingers 39.
The operation of the device is substantially as follows:
When the various shuttle boxes 62 to 65 inclusive are raised, as illustrated in Fig. I, so that the lowermost shuttle box 65 is aligned for movement over the race plate 45 of the loom the various levers to 32 inclusive engage the high surface I3 of the slide bar II and thereby hold the fillings 58 to 6|) inclusive in a raised position and clear of the operating movement of the shuttle carried by the shuttle box 65 and which is adapted to be moved across the race plate by the standard shuttle operating mechanism of the loom. When the next adjacent shuttle box 64 is lowered to operating position in alignment with the race plate the chain 24 moves downwardly with the shuttle box operating mechanism and simultaneously causes the fiexible connection 22 to pull the slide bar I I against the pulling action of the spring I8 an amount sufiicient to cause the lever 32 to drop, as illustrated by the dash lines 56, an amount sufiicient to move the finger 39e downwardly into the recess 46 and simultaneously free the filling and hold the filling 6I downwardly in( said recess. When in this position the fingers 39a and 39h hold the fillings 58 and 59 upwardly and clear of the shuttle operating from the shuttle box 64. The slide bar II will be next moved an amount sufficient to cause both of the fingers 39e and 38o to engage the lower surface 41 of the slide bar and thereby move the fingers 39h and 39o inwardly of the recess 46. This releases the filling 59 for operation with the shuttle contained in the shuttle box 63 while holding the filling 58 in a raised position and the filling 60 and 6I in a lowered position Within said recess. A similar function takes place when the shuttle boxes are lowered an amount sufficient to lower the shuttle boxes 62 in alignment with the race plate 45. This arrangement denitely supports the fillings from the various shuttles clear of the respective operating shuttles in alignment with the race plate of the loom andprevents side lines or double picks. As the respective shuttle boxes 62 to 65 inclusive are raised and the chain 24 is simultaneously raised, the spring I8 urges the slide bar II in the direction indicated by the arrow 66 whereupon the cam surface I2 functions to raise they respective levers 38 to 32 inclusive depending upon the amount of movement imparted to said slide bar II by the coil spring I8 as permitted by the upward movement of the shuttle boxes and chain 24.
With the above arrangement it is only necessary to lengthen or shorten the flexible connection member 22 an amount suicient to obtain the initial set position of the slide bar II and the said portions of the levers 30 to 32 inclusive and the angle of the cam surface I2 is such as to cause each lever to operate at the proper time;l namely, when the respective shuttle boxes are aligned with the race plate of the lay. The operation is entirely automatic from then on and no adjustment is thereafter needed. To shorten or lengthen the flexible connecting member 22 it is only necessary to insert the connection bolt 25 in the proper link in the chain 24 when the attachment is initially secured to the lay.
It is to be understood,.of course, that the -bearings 21 to 29 inclusive supporting the levers 30 to 32 inclusive, are initially raised or lowered the proper amount to give the proper throw to the fingers 39a to 39e inclusive. The said fingers may be independently raised or lowered through the hole and screw connections 3.8.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that simple, e'icientand economicalrmeans have been provided for accomplishing all of the objects and advantages of the invention.
Having described our invention, we claim:
l. An attachment of the character described for attachment to a loom comprising .a pair of supporting brackets each having a guide slot therein, a cam bar having a riser portion slidably mounted in said guide slots, each of said brackets having a slotted portion for connection to the loom and each having laterally disposed tie members intermediate the ends thereof, a pair of intermediately slotted plate-like members adjustably attached to said tie members, a tie rod connecting said plate-like members adjacent one of the ends thereof and a pivot shaft connecting the opposite ends thereof, a plurality of lever arms pivoted to the shaft and having portions extending outwardly to overlie and rest on the cam surface of the cam bar, each of said lever arms having upright rods attached thereto adjacent the free ends thereof, each of said upright rods having angularly disposed fingers on the sides thereof in the direction of the lever arms and means for moving said cam bar in a direction longitudinally of the guide slots to selectively engage the riser portion thereof with the respective lever arms.

An attachment of the character described for attachment to a loom comprising a pair of supporting brackets, each having a guide slot therein, a cam bar having a riser portion slidably mounted in said guide slots, each of said brackets having a portion for connection to the loom and each having laterally disposed tie members thereon, a pair of plate-like members having slotted portions adjustably attached to said tie members, a tie rod connecting said plate-like members adjacent one of the ends thereof and a pivot shaft connecting the opposite ends thereof, a plurality of lever arms pivoted to the shaft and having portions extending outwardly and overlying the cam bar and resting thereon, resilient means connected adjacent one of the ends thereof with the tie rod and connected adjacent the opposite ends thereof to the lever arms so as to constantly urge the portions thereof overlying the cam bar into engagement with said cam bar, each of said lever arms having upright rods attached thereto adjacent the free ends thereof, each of said rods having angularly disposed fingers adjacent the free ends thereof, guide means for retaining said upright rods and finger members in spaced relation with each other and means for moving said cam bar in a direction longitudinally of the guide slots to selectively engage the riser portion thereof with respective lever arms.

An attachment of the character described for attachment to a loom comprising a pair of supporting brackets, each having a guide slot therein, a cam bar having a riser portion slidably mounted in said guide slots, each of said brackets having a portion for connection to the loom and each having laterally disposed tie members thereon, a pair of plate-like members having slotted portions adjustably attached to said rtie members, a tie .rod connecting said plate-like members adjacent one of the ends thereof and a pivot shaft connecting the opposite ends thereof, a plurality of lever arms pivoted to the shaft rand having portions extending outwardly and `overlying the cam bar and resting thereon, resilient means connected adjacent one of the ends thereof with the tie rod and connected adjacent the opposite ends thereof to the lever arms so as to constantly urge rthe portions thereof overlying the cam bar into engagement with said cam bar, each `of said lever arms having upright rods attached thereto adjacent the free ends thereof, each of said rods having angularly disposed ngers ladjacent the free ends thereof, vguide means for retaining said upright rods and finger members in spaced relation with each other, and means for moving said cam bar in one direction longitudinally of the guide slots to selectively engage the riser portion thereof with the respective lever arms and resilient means connected with said cam bar for normally urging said cam bar in the opposite direction.

In a device of the character described the combination of a loom having a lay with a race plate, a plurality of shuttle boxes and means for operating said shuttle boxes and a supporting frame having spaced supporting brackets, each of said brackets having a guide slot therein adjacent one end thereof and slotted portions adjacent the opposite end thereof adjustably connected with the loom, a pair of plate-like members attached in spaced relation with the bracket supports, a cam bar having a riser portion slidably mounted in said guide slots, a tie rod connecting said plate-like members ladjacent one of the ends thereof and a pivot shaft connecting the opposite ends thereof, a plurality of lever arms pivoted to the shaft and each having a portion extending outwardly to overlie and rest on the cam bar, means for resiliently urging said portions into engagement with said cam bar, each of said lever arms having upright rods attached thereto adjacent the free ends thereof, each of said upright rods having angularly disposed linger-like portions and means for moving said cam bar in a direction longitudinally of the cam bar to selectively engage the riser portion thereof with the respective lever arms.

In a device of the character described the combination of a loom having a lay with a race plate, a plurality of shuttle boxes and means for operating said shuttle boxes and a supporting frame having spaced supporting brackets, each of said brackets having a guide slot therein adjacent one end thereof and slotted portions adjacent the opposite end thereof adjustably connected with the loom, a pair of plate-like members attached in spaced relation with the bracket supports, a cam bar having a riser portion slidably mounted in said guide slots, a tie rod connecting said plate-like members adjacent one of the ends thereof and a pivot shaft connecting the opposite ends thereof, a plurality of lever arms pivoted to the shaft and each having a portion extending outwardly to overlie and rest on the cam bar, means for resiliently urging said portions into engagement with said cam bar, each of said lever arms having upright rods attached thereto adjacent the free ends thereof, each of said upright rods having angularly disposed fmger-like portions, guide means for retaining said upright rods and angularly disposed finger-like portions in spaced relation with each other and means for moving said cam bar in a direction longitudinally of the cam bar to selectively engage the riser portion thereof with the respective lever arms.

In a device of the character described the combination of a loom having a lay With a race plate, a plurality of shuttle boxes and means for operating said shuttle boxes and a supporting frame having spaced supporting brackets, each of said brackets having a guide slot therein adjacent one end thereof and slotted portions adjacent the opposite end thereof adjustably connected with the loom, a pair of plate-like members attached in spaced relation with the bracket supports, a cam bar having a riser portion slidably mounted in said guide slots, a tie rod connecting said plate-like members adjacent one of the ends thereof and a pivot shaft connecting the opposite ends thereof, a plurality of lever arms pvoted to the shaft and each having a portion extending outwardly to overlie and rest on the cam bar, means for resiliently urging said portions into engagement with said cam bar, each of said lever arms having upright rods attached thereto adjacent the free ends thereof, each of said upright rods having angularly disposed nger-like portions and means for moving said cam bar in a direction longitudinally of the guide slots to selectively engage the riser portion thereof With the respective levers and resilient means for normally urging said cam bar in the opposite direction.
