"Y v`""azsvsw.E "Y j 'SPRAYING DEVICE Edward Palmer,- Columbus, Ohio Application Deember 4, 1940, serial No. 368,521
Claims.
This invention relates to spraying devices and such as are designed to be used in apparatuses Where the water or other liquid under pressure contains solids or materials adapted to obstruct the flow of the liquid to be sprayed.
In such apparatuses the spraying devices heretofore employed have been of such construction as to become clogged with pieces of the solids contained in the liquid the same being difficult and time consuming to remove.
One object of the present invention is to provide a spraying device of simple and economical form whereby the parts can be easily and quickly manipulated or operated to cause the release and expulsion of the clogging portions by the pressure of the liquid.
Another object of the invention is to provide a spraying device in which the conical or spray forming portion can be easily adjusted to vary the quantity of liquid to be sprayed.
Other objects will be apparent from the disclosure herein.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is a view in front elevation of one construction according to the invention.
Fig. 2 is a central vertical section on the line 4 II--II Fig. 1 with parts in full.
Fig. 3 is a view in side elevation with a small portion in section of a modied form of the construction.
Referring rst to Figs. 1 and 2, the character 5 designates the head of the casing or bib, it having a threaded portion 5a for connecting it with the supply of the water or liquid to be sprayed. In the said head portion is a stem 6 having a thread I at its upper end, a iixed stop 8 and a thread 9 at its lower end. Said stem extends leak-prooy through an opening in the top of the head and has around it a coil spring I0 pressing against an adjustable nut Il engaging the thread 'I. The upward pressure of the spring Il) should be suiiicient to hold the stop 8 in position against the inner side of the head and prevent variation in the predetermined quantity or volume of the spray after adjustment of the spray member.
lOn the screw thread 9 is turned a conical spraying member I2 that, in the spraying operation, cooperates with the corner of the wall of the discharging opening of the head of the casing. By this means the spraying member I2 can be adjusted and xed on the thread 9 to vary the space between said corner and the cone I2 and therefore the volume of the spray or discharge, said portion I2 lbeing fixed in the adjusted position by means of the jam nut I3 pinching said portion I2. It Will be observed that such adjustment, because the parts I2 and I3 are exposed, can be made without taking the device apart and even while the device is functioning as a sprayer. Moreover, it will be observed that should the spraying operation become faulty or prevented by reason of clogging of the casing, the stem 6 can be pushed downward to enlarge the opening at the discharge either by hand upon a knob I4 or by any suitable power exerting means.
Referring now to Fig. 3 the spring I0 of Figs. 1 and 2 is omitted and the threaded stem at 9 4carrying the adjustable spray member I2 and jam nut I3 held yieldingly up with the stop 8 against the inner side of the head 5 by means of a lever I6 pivoted at I8 in a bracket 5b fixed on the head 5. The outer end of the said lever I6 can be suitably weighted or can, as shown, be provided with a weight I9 hung on the lever at 20 while the other end thereof extends into a slot I1 in the upper end of the stem, said slot permitting rocking movement of the lever and reciprocation of the stem. The Weight I9 should be sulcient to hold the stop 8 against the head and the spraying device in its adjusted position from movement by normal pressure of the liquid.
With the construction shown in Fig. 3 the fluid -passa-ge can be cleared of obstruction either by pressing down the stem 8 with the hand or by lifting the weight IS or that end of the lever I8 carrying the weight to depress the spraying device thereby enlarging the outlet for the exit of the clogging material.
The forms of the parts can be changed without departing from the invention as claimed.
What I claim is:
1. A spraying device including a suitable casing having a fluid intake and a discharge, a stem in said casing movable in line with the axis of said discharge, a fixed stop on said stem, means for yieldingly holding said stem with said stop engaged with the casing, said stem having thereon a spraying device, and means whereby said spraying device can be axially adjusted and iixed with respect to said stem and discharge.
2. A spraying device including a suitable casing having a fluid inlet and a discharge, a stem in said casing movable in line vwith the axis of said discharge, a xed stop on said stem, a spring for yieldingly holding said stem with the stop engaged with the casing, said stem having a threaded end projecting through the discharge of said casing, a spraying device adjustably engaging said threaded end, and a jam nut on said threaded end for holding said spraying device in adjusted position.
3. A spraying device including a suitable casing having a uid intake and a discharge, the axis of which is at an angle to the intake, a stem in said casing movable in line with the axis of the said discharge, a xed stop on said stem, means for yieldingly holding said stem with said stop engaged with the casing, said stem having thereon a spraying device, and means whereby said spraying device can be adjusted and iixed with respect to said discharge independently of said stop.
4. A spraying device including a suitable casing having a fluid intake and a discharge, a stem in said casing movable in line with the axis of said discharge, a fixed stop on said stem, gravity actuated means for yieldingly holding said stem with said stop engaged with the casing, said stem having thereon a spraying device, and means whereby said spraying device can be adjusted and fixed on said stem with respect to said discharge independently of said stop.
5. A spraying device including a suitable casing having a fluid intake and a discharge opening, a stem in said casing movable in line with the axis of said `discharge opening, a spraying member on said stem, and means whereby said spraying member can be axially adjusted and xed in adjusted position with respect to said stem and discharge opening, a stop on said stem to engage said casing, and means for yieldingly holding said stem with said stop engaged with said casing against longitudinal movement of the stem by a normal pressure of thev fluid.
