Patented PATENT ol-lflcls noon. HANDLE Antona Miguel.' San Francisco,- Calif. t Application July' lo, 1940, serlal No. 344,196
Claims.
The present invention relates to improvements in door handles andlis more especially directed to the type particularly applicable to the doors of the closed bodies of motor vellicles.
An importantA object ofthe invention is to provide a doorvhandle embodying meansiwhereby it .can be pushed into a recess in the door so as to lie substantially ush with the door body to preclude unauthorized opening of the door.
Another object oi' the invention resides in the provision of adoor actuating handle for motor vehicles, airplanes and the like in which the handle is made up of alplurality of telescoping sections surrounding thel door lock spindle, said handle being collapsible within a recess formed in the door body and locked therein to eliminate y the possibility of the handle catching in the clothes of a pedestrian while the vehicle is in motion and at the same time preclude unauthorl ized opening of the door.
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement o f the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated inthe accompanying drawing and speciilcally pointedout in the appended claims. Y.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like/5dr corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 i's Vfa longitudinal sectional view through a portion o f a car door and illustrating the invention in use.
Figure 2 is a detail sectional view taken sub- 'Figure 3 is a detail sectional view taken substantially on line 3-3 of Figure 1 Referring to the drawing for a more detailed description thereof, the numeral I generally designates a car door and the door'frame is generally designated by the reference numeral 6.
The interior of the door B is hollow and has attached to the inner face thereof a latching mechanisnisfl including a latch bolt I adapted to llt within a keeper recess 9 for maintaining' the door in closed position. The latch bolt l is actuated by means of. a spindle Ill and finaccordance with the present invention, said spindle is llollow and supports therein a coiled tension spring II for a purpose to be hereinafter described.
` The outer face I2 of the door 5 is formed with a depressedportion or recess I3 adapted to confine the'door handle I l' as said handle is-telescoped. In Figure 1 of the drawing the handle is shown in full lines resting within the -re- (cl. 'lo-120s) cess I3 and the broken lines illustrate the posi- I tion of the handle when opening the door.
As more particularly shown in Figure 3 of the drawing,.the hollow spindle I0 is substantially square-shaped in cross section and the means for actuating said spindle to release lthe latch bolt 8 from the recess 9 comprisessubstantially square-shaped sections I5, I6 and'il surroundving the spindle I0 and arranged in telescoping reextended position. .The inner end of the section i5 is also formed with an inwardly extending flange 22 and as shownV in broken lines-in Figure 1 of the drawing, when the sections are in extended position the outwardly and inwardly extending fianges and 22 of the sections I6 and I5, respectively, and the voutwardly and inwardly extending ilanges 20 and 2| of the sections I1 and I6,- respectively, will be in engagement. The actuatinglhandle I4 is attached by any desired means to the section I1.
A pair of plates 23 'are attached byuany de- I 3,v said plates being formed with inwardly extending lugs 25. When telescoping the sections of thedoor` handle or permittingthe extension thereof,lt is necessary to eilect a slight rotation of the -handle so as to permit the slots I! of the `flange I8-i;o align with the lugs 25. In other words, when the sections are telescoped, as shown in full lines in Figure 1 of the drawing and it is 40 desired to release said extensions so as'to open the door, the locking means for the handle, to be hereinafter described, is first released, and the coiled spring Il which is in engagement with the handle Il will urge said handle and thesections outwardly until the ilange Ilabuts 'the lugs 25.
the slots I9 into alignment with the lugs 25 permitting said flange to pass through the lugs and into engagement with the inner face ot the rev cess I3. Then a slight rotation of the handle in the opposite direction will' bring the slots I8 out of alignment with the lugs'25 to cause the ilange Il to be held within the lugs 25. In this position, the 'handle Il is engaged by the operator and rotation thereof will rotate the spindle I0 to relation. As more clearly shownsin Figure lof the drawing, th'e section I1 telescopes within the Aslred means to the inner facci ofthe recess I' pressed inthe appended tension of the spring I I.
' tially square-shaped spindle for actuating the A means has also been provided for locking the handle I4 within the recess I3, said means including a lever 26 adapted to fit within a slot 21 formed in the face 24. The lever 26 is carried on a. shaft 28 of atumbler lock 29 and is 'adapted' to be released by means of a key, not shown. 'Ihe lever 26 will be held Withinv the door and is formed with a flanged end 30 of a size to t within the slot 3|. The handle I4 is formed with a slot 3| in registry with the slot 21 when said handle is locked within the recess I3. The end 30 of the lever 26 projects through the slots 21` and 3| for lockingthe handle, it being understood that the slot 3| is of substantially the same shape and size-as the flanged end 30. Insertion of a key within the tumbler 29 and rotation thereof will release the slot 3|. l With the handle I4 disposed within the recess I3 unauthorized opening of the door 5 is pre# clu'ded, but the door can be opened and closed end 30 of the lever 26 from the from the interior of the vehicle in the conventional manner.
However, in order to open the door from outside of the vehicle, it is necessary to release the locking lever by means of a, proper key and as soon as the lever is released from the Y slot 3l, the spring II will urge the handle I4y and i sections I5, I6 and I1 outwardly. Complete extension of the sections is not accomplished, however, until the'lange I6 has been-connedwithin the lugs 25. Since the sections I5, I6 and I 'I and spindle I0 are square-shaped in cross section, `they will rotate in unison upon actuation of the handle Il. .Y v
Also it will be understood, of course, by Athose skilled in' the art that variations in the hereinabove described device involving the substitutiony of substantial equivalents for the devices described arelintended to be comprehended within the spirit .of the present invention and that the invention is capable of extended application and is not confined to the exact showing of the drawing nor to the precise construction described and,
handle for urging said sections to extended position, a pair of Aplates attached to the inner face of said recessed portion and having lugs surrounding said sections, one of said sections being formed with an aniiular ilange adapted to be held beneath said lugs when said sections are in extended position, and means for vlocking said handle in collapsed position.
3. In a door latch having a latch bolt and spindle means for actuating the same, said door having a recess in its outer face, the improvement which comprises interconnected telescopingsections surrounding saidA spindle means, a handle secured to one of said sections and adapted to be' coniined Within said recess upon collapsing stantially square shaped spindle for actuating the same, said door having a recess in its outer face, the improvement which comprises a multiplicity of interconnected substantially square shaped sections surrounding said spindle, a handle attached to one of said sections and adapted to be "confined within said recess when said 'sections are in collapsed position, spring means within said spindle having one end in engagement with said handle for urging said sections to' extended position, a Ipair of plates attached to the inner face of said recessed portion` and having integrally formed lugs surrounding said sections, and an -,annular flange formed on one oin said sections adapted to b held beneath said lugs when said sections are n extended position.
f 5. In a door having a llatch bolt and a substantially .square 'shaped spindle for actuating the therefore, such changes and modifications may be made therein as do not affect the spirit of the invention nor exceed the. sco'pe thereof as exclaims. What is claimed is: l 1.,In a door having a latch bolt and spindle l within said recess when said sections are in colmeans for actuating the same, said door having a recess in its outer face, the improvement which comprises interconnected telescoping sectionsA surrounding said spindle means, `a handle secured to one of said sections and adapted to be conned within said recess upon collapsing said sections,
same, said door having a recess in its outer face, the improvement which comprises a multiplicity of interconnected substantially square shaped sec'- tions surrounding said spindle, a handle attached to one of said sections and adapted tovbe conned lapsed position, a pair of plates attached to the inner face oi said recessed portion and having integrally formed lugs surrounding said sections, one of said sections 'being formed with an annular ilange adapted to be held beneath-said lugs when a plate attached to lthe inner face of said recessed v portion, means on vsaid plate for holding lone Aof said sections when in extended position, and means for locking said handle within said recess.
2. In a door having a latch bolt and a substansaidsections are in extended position, means for locking said handle in including a tumbler mounted in the door, and a lever actuated by said tumbler, said lever having la flanged end adapted to engage aslot formed in said handle when said handleis'disposed within said recess.
