2 Claims.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in filling devices and more particularly to a funnel adapter to be used when filling drums or other receptacles.
An object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will be held securely in place in the bung opening of a drum when filling the same.
Another object of the device is to provide a funnel within itself or to provide a support to be used in conjunction with a funnel.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a device of the aforementioned character which will be eflicient and reliable in use, strong, and which may be manufactured at low cost.
Still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a vertical transverse sectional view of my invention.
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view taken substantially on the line 22 of Figure l, and
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view of the nozzle.
Referring now to the drawing, in detail, it will be seen that the reference numeral 5 designates generally an L-shaped funnel constructed from suitable material, such as metal.
The upright portion of the funnel 5 is elongated and has a flared top as at 6. The lateral portion of the funnel 5 is of substantially uniform diameter and has formed on its outside a tapered shape projection I which extends around the lower side of the same as shown in Figure 2 of the drawing. The upper edges of the tapered portion I provide shoulders 8. Projections 9 and II! are formed diametrically opposite the tapered portion I as shown in Figure 3 of the drawing.
When in use the lateral end portion of the device is engaged in the bung opening l2 of the drum I3 with the projections 9 and I0 engaged on each side of the top part of the opening l2 and the tapered portion I resting on the lower side of the opening I2. When pressure or force is exerted on the funnel 5 the tapered portion I tends to feed into the opening l2 and thus binds the funnel 5 within the opening I2. When in this position the space above the shoulders 8 between the same and the opening I2 permits the escape of air from the drum I3 when the same is being filled.
As shown in Figure 1 of the drawing a funnel M of the conventional type may be used in conjunction with the funnel 5.
Although I have shown and described herein a preferred embodiment of my invention it is to be definitely understood that I do not desire to limit the application of the invention thereto, and any change or changes may be made therein within the spirit of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
1. In combination with a receptacle having a bung opening therein, a funnel having a laterally extending nozzle end for insertion in said opening, a pair of laterally spaced members on said nozzle at one side thereof for straddling the edge of said opening and interlocking engagement therewith, and a tapered enlargement on the opposite side of said nozzle for wedging engagement with said edge of the opening to frictionally lock the nozzle to said edge.
2. In combination with a receptacle having a bung opening therein, a funnel having a laterally extending nozzle end for insertion in said opening, a pair of laterally spaced members on said nozzle at one side thereof for straddling the edge of said opening and interlocking engagement therewith, and a tapered enlargement on the opposite side of said nozzle for wedging engagement with said edge of the opening to frictionally lock the nozzle to said edge, said enlargement extending partway around said nozzle to form therewith and with said edge of the opening air vents upon opposite sides of the nozzle for the escape of air out of said receptacle.
