EXCAVATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,873, dated March 23, 1880. Application filed November 8, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL W. RoHN, of Defiance, in the county of Defiance and State of Ohio, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Ditching-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a top view of my improved ditchingmachine, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section thereof.
This invention has relation to improvements in machines for cutting trenches for draintiles; and it consists in certain novel combinations of the trench-scoop, the elevator, and dumping device, as hereinafter fully shown and described.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates a strong wooden or metallic axle,
having at its ends arms, upon which rotate the transporting-wheels B.
G indicates a strong rectangular frame, suitably braced transversely, the side bars, a, of which are generally passed through mortises in said axle, but may be bolted thereto, if desired, in any suitable manner. To this frame is, secured the draft tongue a, having the double-tree and its appurtenances, by means of which the ditching-machine is drawn.
D indicates a master-gear, secured in any suitable way to the inner end of one of the transportingwheels B, and meshing with a pinion, b, secured to a short shaft, 1), having its bearings in arms 0, extending horizontally to the rear from the axle, and provided at its inner end with a chain-wheel, c.
D indicates a standard extending up vertically through the axle, and vertically adjustable relative thereto by means of a set-screw, d, extending through the said axle and hear ing against the standard. The sides 0 are carried to the rear in two wings, 7, to which is pivoted to vibrate vertically the elevator-leg F, whereof the upper end is supported from the slotted uprights G, erected on the axle by means of the bars 9. These are pivoted in rear to the elevator-leg,
' and their front ends are carried through the slots h of the said uprights and secured thereto by means of the pins h. At the bottom and top of the log are journaled the rollers k around which passes the endless belt I, provided with the buckets n, and the shaft of the upper roller is provided with a chain or sprocket wheel, a, in the same vertical plane with the wheel 0 The elevator is actuated by an endless chain, 0, passing around the wheels 0' n, through the medium of the shaft 1), its pinion b, and the master-gear D.
The bars 9 are provided with numerous spaced perforations t", by means of which the elevator may be adjusted as the standard D is raised or lowered.
'As shown in Fig. 2, the shovel or scoop is directly under the axle, and hence it follows the movements of ascent and descent of the trans portin g-wheels. Consequently the trench is of equal depth throughout its entire length.
The scoop is secured to the tongue by means of a chain, 19, and raised when the'set-screw is loosened by means of a second chain, 12.

At the rear end of the frame are arranged, in suitable bearings, a number of forked horizontally-vibrating brackets, H, in which is supported a dumping device, J, consisting of an open-ended trough, K, having near each end a roller, around which is passed an endless belt, r, having buckets s or their equivalent arranged at intervals thereon. This dumper is arranged transversely 011 the frame and in an inclined position, and its lower end extends out beyond the wheel, so as to discharge the earth out of the way.
The arms or tines of the brackets are provided with a series of hooks, 2 arranged in pairs, and the dumper-trough is supported by rods a7, extending through these hooks and capable of being shifted from a higher to a lower series, or the reverse, by which means the inclination of the dumper may be regulated at pleasure. The earth, in falling into the dumper by its gravitation, naturally causes the belt to move over its rollers and carry the earth to the end of the said dumper, whence it falls to the ground.
What I claim as new, and desire to by Letters Patent, is
1. In a ditching-machine, the combination, with the slotted axle A, of the standard D, carrying the scoop E and extending through the slot of said axle, the adjustingscrew d, the slotted uprights G on the axle, the conveyerlegs F, pivoted to the scoop, and the perforated bars g, pivoted to said conveyer and adjustably secured to said uprights G, by means of which the elevator may be adjusted as the standard D is raised or lowered through the slot of the axle, as shown and described.
