Description

. v J. P.-MARTIN.
Push-Key Attachment for Annunoiators.
No. 225,843. Patented Mar. 23, I880.
N- PETERSA PHOTWUTNOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON. D. C.
UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN F. MARTIN, or oHIoAeo, ILLINOIS.
PUSH-KEY ATTACHMENT FOR ANNUNCIATORS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,843, dated March 23, 1880.
Application filed December 17, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN F. MARTIN, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements on Push-Key Attachments for Annunciators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the ac companying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.
The nature of my invention relates to an nunciators for hotels and other buildings; and it consists in an attachment for annunciator-keys whereby a connection may be made with the room or closet doors, so that when anybody opens such door notice will be given at the office, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a persective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a detailed view of a part thereof.
A represents the ordinary an nunciator -key, such as ordinarily used in hotels and other buildings, and arranged in a base, B. O is the cap for inelosing the base and key.
On the base 13 is a post, a, in which is pivoted one end of a lever, D, and this lever is passed through a slot in an auxiliary key, F, as shown. The auxiliary key is provided with a plate, E, which has holes in its ends for the passage of guide-pins I) b fastened to the base. The plate E bears against the end of the main key A, while the auxiliary key F projects through a circular opening in the cap 0. The other or free end of the lever D has attached to it a cord, (1, which runs around a roller, 0, and through grooves in moldings Gr, attached to the wall in any suitable manner.
If it should be necessary to carry the cord by a corner, it is done by attaching a metal guide, H, in the corner, and in said guide is a roller, 6, for the cord to pass around. The cord will then run into the keeper J for the lock-bolt, around a roller, 6 applied therein, and the end of the cord secured to one end of a pivoted lever, 1, within said keeper.
L represents the lock-bolt of the lock on the door M. In the end of this lock-bolt is a spring-latch, h, which, when the door is closed, catches on the end of the lever I in the keeper. In opening the door this latch turns the lever I on its pivot sufficiently far to pull the cord at so as to operate the lever D and press the auxiliary key F against the main key A, and thus work the annunciator.
This attachment may be arranged to connect with the door of the room, or the door of any closet in the room, and will thus give notice of the opening of such door by any unauthorized person. It may also be arranged with a pull-cord, to be convenient for invalids to call the attendants.
In some cases I may dispense with the lever used in connection with the auxiliary key and in its place, and to accomplish the same purpose I cut a slot from the lower end of the key up half-way, large enough to receive a small roller or pulley. The cord then passes out from under the molding, around a small roller in its end at its connection with the cap, passing under the cap at its base, running up over the push-key proper, over the roller in the auxiliary key, and down on the opposite side, and fastened to the cap.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. An attachment for an annunciator-key consisting of an auxiliary key mounted upon a pivoted lever, and said lever connected by a cord with a device in the keeper of a doorlock to be operated by the opening of the door, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination of the annunciator-key, A, base B, post a, pivoted lever D, auxiliary key F, with plate E, guide-pins b b, and the cap 0, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
3. The combination, with the annunciatorkey A, of the lever D, auxiliary key F, with plate E, cord 01, pulleys c e, &c., keeper J, with lever I, and the spring-latch h in the lockbolt L, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set myhand this 5th day of December, 1879.
JOHN F. MARTIN. Witnesses:
