VELOCIPEDE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 225,771, dated March 23, 1880.
Application filed January 15, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ROBERT W. TEEsE, of Parkers Landing, in the county of Armstrong and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Manu- Motors or Hand-Propellers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description thereof, that will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The same letters and figures of reference are used to indicate the corresponding parts.
After describing the invention, its nature and extent will be shown in the claims.
The object of my invention is to furnish a I manu-motor or hand-propeller.
I am aware that inventions which require both hands to move the carriage have been patented; but this requires great skill in operating the motor. If one hand rotates the driving-pulley, to which the handle is attached, more rapidly than the opposite pulley is rotated, then an irregular or wabbling motion of the carriage is produced. In traveling over rough or uneven roads a slight obstruction will also give the carriage the same wabbling movement. On the other hand, my propeller is so constructed that it may be moved by one hand or by both hands. Both of thedriving-wheels are moved by the same hand-power. Consequently the driving-wheels must advance with the same impetus, or be equally retarded by the same obstruction or unevenness in the road. This is mainly accomplished by the use of a single motive shaft, which is rigidly attached to the two drivingpulleys.
I am also aware that an invention has been patented which is mounted on four wheels, and is also propelled by a single motive shaft. This propeller, however, requires two persons to operate it, and in other respects it is different from my invention.
Figure 1 is a side view of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of the same.
A A is the frame, on the rear of which is the seat 0, erected on the platform B, formed on the frame. D D are the driving-wheels, to the inner side of which are rigidly fixed the small pulleys E E. The driving-pulleys F F are connected by the bent motive shaft S, which is rigidly attached to them, the bearings of which shaft being in the top of the upright cross-posts H H. The belts G Gpass over the driving-pulleys F F and the pulleys E E. The steering-lever I is connected with the vertically-slotted guide-bar L, in which the guide-wheel M has its bearings. The bolt N hinges the guide-bar L to the horizontal cross-bars K K. 1
The circumference of the driving pulley is about three times the circumference of the pulley E.
It is evident that the driving-pulley F should be made of the largest practicable size in order to secure the greatest speed of the propeller.
The driving-wheels D D should be made as light as possible consistent with strength. I prefer to have them not less than four feet in diameter.
The operator and his companions are mounted on the seat C, while the platform B contains the baggage of the travelers. With either one or both hands the operator can rotate the motive shaft S sixty or seventy revolutions per minute. This will cause the propeller to travel from thirty to forty miles per hour.
The guide-lever I is operated by the feet and enables the operator to turn the propeller when desirable.
Having now fully described my invention and its mode of operation, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The motive shaft S, the driving-pulleys F F, and the belts G Gr, in combination with the pulleys E E, the driving-wheels D D, the steering-lever I, the guide-bar L, and the guidewheel M, substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes herein set forth.
