Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JULIUS BERKEY, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
ORNAMENTATION OF FURNITURE-MARBLE.
SPECIFICATION 'forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,505, dated March 16, 18810.
Application filed January 5, 1880.
To au whom it may concern Be it known that I, JULrUs BERKEY, of Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigamhave invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Ornamentation of Furniture-Marble; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it Vappertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has relation to furniture-marble-that is, table-tops, tops and backs for wash-stands, dressing-cases, and similar articles; and it consists in a novel method of ornamentation of the same, having for its object to produce a ne and unique eect at a small expense, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.
Heretofore it has been usual to make marble tops or backs of this class with a plain molding, in place of which I simply bevel the edge, and then indent or engrave the said beveled edge with any-suitable ornamental pattern or design, as shown in the drawings. The bevel has the effect of 4setting off the pattern or design to much better advantage than if' this were engraved 011 a plain surface; and by cutting away portions of the polished beveled surface to produce the ornamental design, showing the natural color and texture of the stone, a very handsome and unique effect is produced.
I prefer to Lise a straight bevel, as shown in Figure l. of the drawings, inasmuch as the pattern is easier to work on this; but, if desired, a convex or concave bevel may be used, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 respectively.
I am well aware that it is not new, broadly, to ornament plain marble surfaces by beveling and engraving; but I am not aware that such ornamentation, produced in the manner hereinbefore described, has ever been applied to furniture-marble where it is desirable to have a correspondence or similarity of design between the wooden and marble parts of the article of furniture. My method of ornamentation admits, in a superiordegree, of such similarity. For example, a dressing-case, as shown at Fig. l, provided with a marble top ornamented with the beveled and engraved edge, may have the mirror-frame, which is of wood, engraved in a like manner. Hence What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
A new ornamentation of furniture-marble, the same consisting in first beveling the edge and then engraving or indenting the said beveled edge with any suitable ornamental pattern, substantially as set forth.
In testimon)T that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
