Patented Aug. 26, 1941 NT O FICE SNOW REMOVER Walter E. Klauer, Dubuque, Iowa Application February 15, 1940, Serial No. 319,133 11 Claims. (01. 3743) The invention relates to snow removers and more particularly to snow removers which are mounted on vehicles for up and down movement thereon.
My prior Patent Number 2,144,311 shows a snow remover so mounted on a vehicle. Means are provided therein for raising the snow remover, composed of hydraulic cylinder mechanism and control valves therefor. When the snow remover is merely to be carried by the vehicle in raised position for transportation from one point to another without operating to remove snow from the road in front of the vehicle, gradual leakage in the hydraulic mechanism might cause the snow remover to slip down gradually until it would strike the road.
To avoid this difficulty, and to take the load off of the hydraulic mechanism, my prior patent provides pins which can be inserted through the T-guides upon which the snow remover is mounted and below the guide blocks so as to provide a mechanical support for the snow rem-over. This arrangement ordinarily requires the presence of two men for its use, one to control the lifting mechanism from the driving seat of the vehicle, and the other to insert the pins. In practice it has been found difiicult for a single operator to carry out this procedure but it is obviously desirable to permit a single person to manipulate the snow remover.
' The primary object of the present invention is then to provide mechanism by which a single operator can mechanically look a snow remover in raised position.
A further object is to provide such an arrangement which can be preset to lock automatically when the snow remover is raised to a certain height.
Another object is to provide a construction of this kind'w'hich is combined in a simple and effective fashion with the guiding mechanism for the up and down movement of the snow remover.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will appear more fully from the following description, particularly when taken in conjunction with drawings which form a part thereof.

Theinvention is shown as applied to a snow from the side of the vehicle 2.
Mounted on the frame member 94 is a push block of rectangular shape having side walls I4 connected rigidly to frame member 94 and a rear wall It which slidingly engages the front face of guide M4 to transmit the force between the vehicle and the snow remover.
Extending through side walls I 4 is a pin I8. On this pin, and outside the side walls, are rotatably moun'ted plates 2B which extend past the edges of the bar of the T-guide and have flanges 22 extending behind the bar so as to connect the push block to the guide.
Turnably mounted on pin I8 between the side walls I 1 are the stems 24'. of two hooks 26. As shown in Fig. 3, hook 26 has a nose 28 and behind this nose a fiat portion 30. The width of this flat portion is slightly greater than the combined thickness of the upper edge of the bar of T- guide I! and a reinforcing block 32 mounted thereon. The top front edge of hook 25 is curved or inclined as shown at 3 3.
1 Extending through and rigid with each of hooks 26 is a pin 36 which extends beyond one of the side walls It. .Mounted on pin I8 outside of plate 20, on the same side of the push block, is a bell crank lever having an arm 38 provided with a handle 40 and a second arm 42 having a pin 44 connected by a coil tension spring 46 to pin 36.
The movement ofhooks 26 in the counterclockwise direction (Fig. 3) is limited by rigid projections 68 engaging the rear wall It of the push block.
The operation of this device is as follows: When the parts are in the position shown in solid lines and dashes, Fig. 3, the line joining pins 36 and 44 is in front of (or, in the drawing, to the left of). the axis of pin I8, which is thecommon axis of the hooks and the bell crank lever. The coil spring 45 will therefore hold the parts in the position shown, and the snow remover can be raised and lowered while the latching mechanism remains inoperative.
Ifnow the snowremover is to be heldin raised position, the bell crank lever is turned clockwise, Fig. 3, until the line joining pins 36 and 44 moves behind (or to the right of, in the drawing) the axis of pin [8. Hooks 26 are then moved by spring 46 towards the dot and dash line position, Fig. 3, in which their noses engages the face of T-guide H4, and are held in resilient engagement therewith by the coil springs.
The operator can now, from the control seat, operate the lifting mechanism. The push block and the latching mechanism slide up on the T- guide until the curved surfaces 34 engage the edge of block 32, thus pushing the hooks backward enough to let them slip over the upper edge of the bar of the T-guide to the position actually shown in dot and dash lines in Fig. 3 so that they will support the snow remover mechanically and independently of the lifting mechanism.
When the snow remover is to be operated, the bell crank lever is thrown back to the full line or normal position. Now, as soon as the snow remover is raised sufiiciently to permit nose 28 to clear the upper edge of the T-guide, springs 46 will throw the hooks back to inoperative position and the snow remover may be lowered.
While I have described herein one embodiment of my invention I wish it to be understood that I do not intend to be limited thereby except within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In combination with a vehicle, a snow remover, and means mounting the snow remover on the vehicle for vertical movement with respect thereto, including a guide on said vehicle, and a member connected to said snow remover and slidable on said guide, means mounted on said member to lock the member with respect to the guide, and means settable for selectively urging said locking means to locking and unlocking positions, said last means being selectively operable in all positions of said member.
2. In combination with a vehicle, a snow remover, and means mounting the snow remover on the vehicle for vertical movement with respect thereto, a hook pivoted on the snow remover and engageable with the vehicle upon movement of the snow remover with respect thereto, a lever mounted to turn about the same axis as said hook, and spring means connecting said lever and hook for selectively urging said hook to engaging and non-engaging positions.
3. In combination with a vehicle, a T-shaped guide mounted on the vehicle, a snow remover, a member connected to said snow remover and engaging the face of said guide to guide the snow remover for vertical movement with respect to the vehicle, a pair of hooks pivoted on said member, and means settable to urge said hooks into engagement with the face of said guide on opposite sides of the leg thereof, whereby said hooks may engage an end of said guide to lock said snow remover against movement.
4. In combination with a vehicle, a T-shaped guide mounted on the vehicle, a snow remover, a push block connected to the snow remover and having side walls and a rear Wall, said rear wall engaging the face of said guide, a pin mounted in said side walls, a hook pivotally mounted on said pin, and means settable for urging said hook into engagement with the face of the guide, whereby the hook may engage the top of the guide to lock the snow remover in raised position.
5. In combination with a vehicle, a T-shaped guide mounted on the vehicle, .a snow remover, a member connected to said snow remover and engaging the face of said guide to guide the snow remover for vertical movement with respect to the vehicle, a pair of hooks pivoted on said member, and means settable to urge said hooks into engagement with the face of said guide on opposite sides of the leg thereof, whereby said hooks may engage an end of said guide to lock said snow remover against movement, said last means comprising a lever pivoted to turn about the same axis as said hooks, and a spring connected to said lever on one side of said axis and to said hooks on the other side of said axis.
6. In combination with a vehicle, a T-shaped guide mounted on the vehicle, a snow remover, a push block connected to the snow remover and having side walls and a rear wall, said rear wall engaging the face of said guide, a pin mounted in said side walls, means mounted on said pin and engaging the rear face of the guide, a hook pivotally mounted on said pin, and means settable for urging said hook into engagement with the face of the guide, whereby the hook may engage the top of the guide to lock the snow remover in raised position.
7. In combination with a vehicle, a T-shaped guide mounted on the vehicle, a snow remover, a push block connected to the snow remover and having side walls and a rear wall, said rear wall engaging the face of said guide, a pin mounted in said side walls, a hook pivotally mounted on said pin, and means settable for urging said hook into engagement with the face of the guide, whereby the hook may engage the top of the guide to lock the snow remover in raised position, said last means comprising a lever pivoted to turn about the same axis as said hook, and a spring connected to said lever on one-side of said axis and to said hook on the other side of said axis.
8. In combination with a vehicle, a T-shaped guide mounted on the vehicle, a snow remover, a push block connected to the snow remover and having side Walls and a rear wall, said rear wall engaging the face of said guide, a pin mounted in said side walls, means mounted on said pin and engaging the rear face of the guide, hooks pivotally mounted on said pin, a rod extending through said hooks, and means settable for urging said hook into engagement with the face of the guide, whereby the hook may engage the top of the guide to lock the snow remover in raised position, said last means comprising a lever pivoted to turn about the same axis as said hooks, and a spring connected to said lever on one side of said axis and to said rod on the other side of said axis.
9. In combination with a vehicle, a road machine, and means mounting the road machine on the vehicle for vertical movement with respect thereto, a hook pivoted on the road machine and engageable with the vehicle upon movement of the road machine with respect thereto, and. means settable for selectively urging said hook to engaging and non-engaging positions, said last means being selectively operable in all positions of said road machine.
10. In combination with a vehicle, a guide mounted on the vehicle, a road machine, a member connected to said road machine and engaging said guide to guide the road machine for vertical movement with respect to the vehicle, a hook pivoted on said member, and means settable for urging said hook into engagement with said guide, said last means being selectively operable in all positions of the road machine whereby said hook respect to the vehicle and means mounted for movement with the locking means urging said locking means to locking and unlocking positions, said last means being selectively operable in all 5 positions of said locking means.
