Application January 28, 1941-, Serial N0. 376,395 5 Claims; (c1. 1e-1 3e) The present invention relates'to new and useful improvements in nut tapping machines and has for its primary object to provide means for feeding the .nuts to the tap with the aperture of,
the nut in alignment with the axis of the tapso that the tap will be properly centered with respect to the nut and for guiding the nut throughout the entire cutting area of the tap;
A still further object is to provide removable guide means for the interior of the driving head of the tapping machine designed to'prevent jamming of the nut whiie traveling through the head and also serving to center the stem portion of the tap; the said guide means being repla'oeabl'e should the same become worn;
A still further object is to provide a device of this character of simple andpractical construction, which is efii'cient andreliable in performance, relatively inexpensive to'manufacture and maintain in operationand otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended, f Y Other objects andiadvantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference'being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein likelnumerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through the housing for the machine, 7

Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates the housing for the nut tapping machine which includes the hinged guard 6 for the rotating driving head 1.
The nuts are fed by gravity in an upstanding chute 8 which is secured at its lower endto one of a pair of spaced parallel guides 9, the chute registering with the notches 10 formed on the opposed inner edges of the guides, the notches communicating with the V-shaped grooves ll of one section of the formed on the opposed faces of the guidesas shown to advantage in Figure 5 of the drawings. The guides 9 are secured to the respective sides of the housing 5 by bolts l2 which are inserted throughspacing blocks iii, the inner edges of the blocks having ledges guides 9. g
The reciprocating plunger which works between the guides 9 is shown at l5, and which is actuated in the usual manner by the rocker arm I 5'.
The rear ends of the guides 9 are formed with circular extensions (-1 forming a continuation of the channels H, the extensions being freely I 4 which underlie the 'mounted in the opening l8 at the front end discharge opening 23 extending laterally through the side ofthe head.
The opening 23' has communication with the chamber 24" inlthe head in which the curved stem portion 25 of the tap is positioned. The stem 25 has its rear end positioned in the opening 23 and has its front end projecting outwardly of the 7 head through the opening l8 into the guides 9, the front end of the tap being formed with the cutter 26 of conventional construction which terminates adjacent the notches M as shown in Figure 2 of the drawings.
The guide 23 includes the sections 21 and 21 secured respectively to the sections 19 and 20 of the head, each guide section including an attaching plate 28 having a threaded opening 29 through which the bolt 22 is inserted for aligning the guide sections, the plate being secured to the head section by bolts 3|. The plate has an inner edge portion 32 which forms one side of the opening I8 to snugly receive the extension I], the inner edge of the plate then extending at substantially a degree angle as shown at 34, in a direction toward the opening 23, the opening having a flared inner end 36. The nuts are of a diameter substantially equal to the diameter of the tubular opening 23 and accordingly serve to center the rear end of the stem in the discharge opening while the snug fit of the nuts in the guide channels II serve to center the front end of the tap therein.

vantages and manner of use of the device will be readily understood from the foregoing without further detailed explanation.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
1. A nut tapping machine embodying a driving head having a front opening and a tap arranged therein with its front end projecting forwardly of the opening and a guide for the nuts in advance of the head, said guide comprising a pair of spaced parallel members between which the tap is positioned, said members having a longitudinally extending channel in the opposed edges thereof for conformably receiving the sides of the nuts, a circular extension on the rear ends of the members freely positioned in the front opening of the head and projecting into said head, and spaced supports for the guide members carried by the machine and underlying the members and on which the members are secured.

A nut tapping machine embodying a driving head having a front opening and a tap arranged therein with its front end projecting forwardly of the opening and a guide for the nuts in advance of the head, said guide comprising a pair of spaced parallel members between which the tap is positioned, said members having a longitudinally extending channel in the opposed edges thereof for conformably receiving the sides of the nuts, said guide communicating with the front opening, said driving head comprising a pair V 2. A nut tapping machine embodying a driving of longitudinally split sections, means hingedly connecting one edge of the sections together, and a sectional guide removably secured within the head at the opposite edge thereof, said last named guide having one edge exposed at one side of the head and provided with a discharge opening for the nuts.
4. A nut tapping machine embodying a driving head having a front opening and a trap arranged therein with its front end projecting forwardly of the opening and a guide for the nuts in advance of the head, said guide comprising a pair of spaced parallel members between which the tap is positioned, said members having a longitudinally extending channel in the opposed edges thereof for conformably receiving the sides of the nuts, said guide communicating with the front opening, said driving head comprising a .pair of longitudinally split sections, means hingedly connecting one edge of the sections together, and a sectionalguide rem'ovably secured within the head at the opposite edge thereof, said last named guide having one edge exposed at one side of the head and provided with an inwardly flared discharge opening for the nuts.
