PORTABLE FENCE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,162, dated March 2, 15880.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that l, JOSEPH PEABODY, of Oonotton, in the county of Harrison and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Fences; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to t-he letters of reference marked thereon,

This invention has for its object to furnish a substantial portable fence adapted for fencing stock, and for various other uses peculiar to farming pursuits, and is also adapted for treeboxes.

It consists in the peculiar manner by which the several pickets are held together by staples and links arranged on the outer side thereof, as will be hereinafter fully explained.

In the drawings, Figure l is a plan of a scries of pickets united to vform an inclosure. Fig. 2 shows the pickets rolled into a small bundle. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section, showing the method of attaching the staples and links; and Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a single picket. i

c are the pickets or vertical rails which compose my fence; On the outer side of the rails or pickets I lix a staple, b, so arranged as to leave a small portion, b', of the rail between its ends-and the edge Vof said rail. In the staples I place links c, which unite the rails together, as shown.

If a number of rails thus united be bent inward or away from the links, the latter with the staples will form a chain surrounding on the outside the series of rails, as shown in Fig. 4.

When the fence is set up, as shown in Fig. 4, the links c come against the projecting' edges b' and bind the series of pickets into a rigid circle.4

The edges of the pickets, if desired, can be so formed that they will come together and thus make a strongerfence; but this is not necessary for the usual purposes for which the fence is intended.

The fence when not in use may be folded back into a close compact form, as shown in Fig. 8.

When the fence is set up the free ends are fastened together by a link, c, having on oneV end a hook, which is caught in the end of the staple b, and may be hooked or unhooked at pleasure.

The fence may be staked to the ground through the rings or eyes d, placed near the bottom of several of the pickets.

I have two series of staples and linksone placed near the top, the other nea-r the bottom, of the pickets, as shown in Fig. 1.

It will be understood that this fence when set up, as shown in Fig. l, is' seltsupporting and stands alone without posts, stakes, or other braces. The rings d are employed when the inclosure is small and the pickets employed are few in number.

It will be further seen that the series of pickets united as described, when turned inwardthat is, so as to bring the staples and links on the outer curve or side, as shown in Fig.1b ind together by the bite of links b on the shoulders or projecting' edges l1', and form a staunch circular inclosure, andlwhen turned in the opposite direction they fold together into a close compact bundle, as shown in Fig. 2.

I arn aware of the patent granted to Joseph D. Norman, August 4, 1868, and I do not claim the invention set forth therein; but

Vhat l do claim is- A portable fence composed of a series of pickets, e, having a series of staples, b, arranged all on the outer or same side thereof, and so Vdriven into said pickets as to provide bearing-edges b between their shanks and the edges ofthe pickets, and united by links c, vwhich bear on the projecting edges b and bind the pickets into a self-supporting circular fence, as shown in Fig. l, substantially as set forth.
