CLOCK-CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,112, dated March 2, 1880.
Application filed May 16, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, HENRY J. DAVIES and DANIEL M. SoMnRs, both of Brooklyn, in Kings county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clock-Gases, of which the following is a specification.
The object of our invention is to supply a strong and highly-finished clock-case at a low price; and to this end it consists in a novel construction of a case ofseveral pieces of sheet or plate metal, which, by being separately stamped or pressed by dies or otherwise formed by the cheap processes used in fashioning sheet metal, and separately plated or lacquered, enable the desired result to be produced, one of the important features of the case being its hollow base, to which the sides and top are adapted, and which consists of a single piece of sheet metal struck up or stamped into the required shape, having a raised central portion, in the upper surface of which are indented grooves for the reception of the upright sides and back of the case and the dialplate of the clock, and in which are preferably bolt-holes for the reception of bolts for securing the parts of the clock-case together, surrounded by recesses, in which may be inserted the ends of tubular casings inclosing said bolts.

Similar letters of reference designate correspondingparts in all the figures.
A designates the base of the clock-case, and B the top thereof. The base A is hollow, and as it is stamped or pressed from a single piece of sheet or plate metal any configuration may readily be given it to imitate in appearance a solid base.
The top B is here represented as composed of two sheet or plate metal sheets, a, stamped or pressed with any ornamental moldings to suit the taste, and preferably also a frame or filling-piece, b, of cast metal, (shown detached in Fig. 6,) interposed between them, and having its edges shaped to conform to the shape of the metal shells a, which are here shown as secured to the body I), by having their outer edges bent and lapped one over the other, as represented at a in Figs. 1 and 2. As the body 0 conforms in shape with the shells a, the latter may be made of very light metal without danger of becoming bruised or dented. The upper only of the two shells (0 extends entirely over the top; but, if desirable, it may be provided with an opening, and a glass plate may be inserted.
I have represented the base A as having grooves c impressed or indented into its upper face, and the top 13 as having corresponding grooves d impressed or indented into its lower face. In these grooves the back, sides, dialplate 0, and glass front f may be inserted, and by them the said parts are held against lateral displacement.
C (see Fig. 5) designates a piece of sheet or plate metal bent so as to form the back and sides of the case, and having its front edges bent at g 9, so as to provide for securing the dial-plate c and glass front f in their proper positions. The sides of the piece 0 may have raised open panels h, in which glass plates 7t may be inserted and held in place by clips 7%. (See Figs. 1 and 2.)
D designates bolts, provided at their lower ends with nuts 5, and having their upper ends inserted in screw-threaded sockets in the top B. These bolts serve to secure the parts of the case together, and are exterior to the sides thereof, the piece 0 preferably having concave corners (clearly represented in Fig. 3) for the reception of the said bolts, which, in such case, have the appearance of an ornamental bead upon the corner of the ease. The bolts D are here represented as inelosed in tubular casings j, (see Fig. 3,) which may be richly ornamented to suit the taste, and which are preferably held transversely by recesses k in the base A and top 13.
E designates a handle by which the case may be lifted and carried. It is here shown as secured to the case by screws 1 passing through the top B.
It Will be seen that as nearly all the parts of the case are formed from sheet or plate metal, by stamping or pressing, they may be made at a small cost, and, as all said parts are separate, they may be linished and ornamented by plating, lacqnering, or in any desirable manner before putting the ease together, and that a case may thus be made equal in appearance to a case formed in one piece by casting, and at a very much less cost.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A sheet-metal clock-case composed of a struck-lip sheet-metal base, a sheet-metal top, and sheet-metal upright sides and back formed in one piece, the base having grooves indented in its upper surface, the top having similar grooves indented in its lower surface, and the sides and back having their end edges inserted in the grooves in. the base and top, respectively, and secured by any suitable means, substan tially as described.
2. A clock-ease composed of a grooved hollOW base, a grooved top, a single plate of metal forming the back and metal parts of the sides, a dial, and a glass front, the said plate, 'the dial, and the glass being inserted into grooves in the said base and top, and the dial and glass front being held by the turned-in edges of the said plate, substantially as specified.
