The principal object of my invention is to provide a' flat opening album or binder withv leaf holding means that permits expansion or contraction. Another object is to make such an a1 bum of such simple loose-leaf construction that the manner in which leaves may be added to or removed therefrom will be obvious to an ordinary layman.

A still further object is to make said album of such materials and parts as can readily be formed or cut into the desired shape, and that are of moderate cost, and are durable.

The foregoing and other objects which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, may be accomplished by a construction, combination and arrangement of parts such as is disclosed by the drawing and specification. The nature of the invention is such as to render it susceptible to various changes and modifications, and, therefore, I am not to be limited to said disclosure; but am entitled to all such changes therefrom as fall within the scope of my claim.

As illustrated, my album or binder has a top cover I and a bottom cover 8, each of which has a binding portion "Ia. and 8d, at the left edge thereof jointed thereto at 9. This permits the main portions of said covers I and 8 to be moved to open or closed position while said binding portions Ia. and 8a. can remain in their position. The join 9 permitting this movement is reinforced by covering it with a strip of material I such as cloth as shown. Both covers 'I and 8 have holes II in their said binding portions Ia and 8a to permit the usual telescopic posts I3 or screw posts, to extend therethrough.

I provide leaf holders I5 of any desired color which consist of a fiat supporting or main anchorage portion I6 which extends between the upper and lower edges of my album and which is preferably about the same size as said binding portions Ia and 8a, or a little wider. Extending from said supporting piece It are a plurality of sheet-holding tabs or arms II, a portion of each saidlarm I1 being formed into a loop or arcuate portion I8 in which the leaves 25 of my album are'r'etained, and are readily movable therein. Beyond said p I8 is an end portion I9 which extendsiover-said supporting piece I6, because said am H has been turned back upon itselfsas shown. By scoring. said arm IT as at 20 just beyond said supporting piece I6, and again scoring it, as at 2|, at a more distant point, said loop I8 is formed between said scores 20 and 2I in a simple manner. Said leaf holders I5 may be made of a flexible sheet material such as Celluloid, plastic, or thin metal, and said supporting piece I6 has holes 22 therein which correspond with said holes II, and through which said telescopic posts I 3 extend. To hold said free end portions I9 in place some of them may be provided with holes as at 23 and said posts B will extend therethrough so that said leaf holder will be held evenly in position.

The leaves or sheets 25 which my binder or album is made to hold consist of the usual sheets or leaves 25 of paper or thin cardboard, and at their left side a plurality of thin slots 26 are cut therein that are spaced only a short distance from the left edge of said sheets. Said slots 26 correspond with said arms I'I, being slightly larger to permit the free end portions I9 and loops I8 of said arms to be readily inserted thereinto and to provide for movement of said leaves 25 in said loops I8. Each said leaf holder I5 can receive a desired number of said leaves or sheets 25, such as twelve, and any leaf can be removed by sliding it and any leaf above it off said leaf holder I5, putting back the leaves 25 desired to be kept in the album. The leaves 25 normally rest in said loop or arcuate portion I8 and can freely move from open to closed position therein. Thus it will be seen that this album has the advantages of looseleaf binding, and said leaves 25, when the album is opened, will lie flat.

One or more leaf holders I5 may be used in my album, and between said leaf holder a spacer member 28 is placed, which rests directly on said free end portion I9 which lies flat on said fiat supporting piece I6. These spacer members 28 may be made of fiber, wood or other suitable material, and they have holes 29 therein to correspond with said holes II and 22 and 23, through which said telescopic posts I3 extend. There is a spacer member 28 that lies flat against said bottom cover binder portion 8a and another said spacer member at the top of the assembly of leaf holders that is directly below said top cover binder portion Ia. As pictures or other things are aflixed to said sheets 25 their thickness is increased, and the spacer members 28 serve to provide suflicient space between one said supporting piece l6 and another, so that the sheets 25 can be turned over freely even though they occupy considerably more space as they are increased in number or thickened as by pasting photographs or papers on them.

The whole assembly is fastened together preferably by a, cord 30 which extends through said telescopic posts 13, and the end portions of which are tied or otherwise connected together as indicated at 3|. As will be seen, it is a simple matter to remove one or more leaves 25 or add to them, or add to the number of leaf holders l5 and spacers 28 by merely untying said cordJ30, taking the top cover 7 off, removing whichever said spacers 28 and leaf holders l5, as is necessary, or adding to them, as desired. Said leaves 25 can readily be slipped over said end portions 19 to. remove them, or new sheets can easily be inserted in'placeby-inserting said end portions l 9 through said slots 26.

In this construction any part of my album can be opened thus presenting any single sheet 25 de+ sired in substantially fiat, visible position. It is adaptable to hold bookkeeping records and other papers in a loose-leaf form and so they can be opened to flat position.

What I claim is:

An album comprising a bottom cover, a top cover, each said cover having a binding portion at one side, theremainder of each said cover being movable relative to said binding portion from closed to open position, said binding portions having holes therein, leaves between said covers each having slots -at-aside portion thereof, a plurality ofleaf holding members 'between said covers, each embodying a supporting portion lying between said binding portions, and having a hole therein, tabs extending from said fiat supporting portion into said slots in said leaves and being turned back upon themselves and having free ends that extend to said supporting portion, one of said free ends having a hole therein, spacer members between said leaf holding members having holes therein, said holes in said binding portions, supporting portions spacer membersand free end being so positioned that they arerin alinement with each other, means extending through said'holes and holdingsaid covers, leaf holdingmembers and spacer members in assem bled relationship.
