It is another object of my invention to provide a new and improved excavating shovel and a new and improvedmeans for moving the shovel from onaiob to another.

A shovel constructed according" to my invention has an upperrevolving frame ID on which aboom ii is pivotally mounted. The A-frame legs I2 and I3 are adapted'to support the boom by means, of boom hoist cables ll. The shovel 22, of the usual type, is adapted to be swung for digging by means of the cables and sheaves indicated generally at 23 and these are actuated by means of the hoisting drum 24; The door 26 of the shovel 22 may be opened or tripped by means of the trip rope 21 which may be pulled 'bythe operator by hand.
Power for operating the various sheaves and driving the excavating shovel is ed by means of any prime mover such as the gasoline 3!. The upper. revolving frame is mounted for rotation on the turntable 32 and is preferably mounted on the turntable bymeans of rollers 33 which permit the turntable to rotate in accordance with the usual turntable drive hereinafter discussed. The turn-. table '32 is mounted on a lower frame 34 and A tread drive sprocket 31 at one end of each shaft I6I, called the swing shaft,
of the tread frames36, and tread rollers 38 at the other end of the tread frames 36, aiford means by which the endless tracks 39 may be rotatably mounted. The springs 4| serve as takeups for the idler wheels 38 and also serve to relieve stress on the idler sprockets in the event that any stones or the like get into the track. The portions of the tracks 39 which are in contact with the ground are held in relatively flat position by means of a plurality of rollers 43.
.Retuming now to the drive gearing, and referring more particularly to Figures 4 and 5, the
prime mover 3| is adapted to drive a large sprocket wheel 46 by means of a chain 41 or other suitable drive means. The sprocket wheel 46 is mounted on the main power shaft 46. The main power shaft 48 is adapted to drive a reverse shaft 49 by means of a pinion 5| on shaft 48 and a gear 52 which is mounted on the reverse shaft 49. The gear 52 in turn drives a front drum gear 53 and a rear drum gear 54, the front drum gear being mounted on a front drum shaft 56 and the hoisting drumgear- 54 being mounted upon a hoisting shaft 51. The crowding drum or front drum I8 is keyed to theshaft 56 but the shaft may be engaged or disengaged at will to the gear 53 by means of a clutch indicated at 63. The shaft 56 may also be engaged or disengaged to a reversing clut ch indicated at 64 to reverse the direction of rotation of the drum I8, the drive for reversing the drum being afforded-by means of a sprocket chain 66 and a sprocket gear 61 on clutch 64 and another sprocket gear 68 on the shaft 49. The hoisting drum 24 may be engaged to the hoisting drum gear 54 by means of a clutch indicated ,at 13.
Reverse action of the drum. of course, is afforded by means of the weight of the boom.
A boom hoist drum 12 is provided for winding the boom hoisting cables I4 and this drum is adapted to. be driven by means of a sprocket 14 .which maybe engaged .or disengaged to the shaft 49 by means of clutch 16. The sprocket 14 drives a chain 11 which in turn drives a sprocket 18 and this sprocket is mounted on a shaft 19. The shaft 19 rotates a pinion 8| which in turn drives a gear 82 to rotate the boom hoist drum 12.
The track 39 is adapted to be rotated by means of the shafting and gearing which I am about to describe. The reverse'gearshaft 49 has a pair of clutches 86 and 81 and these are adapted to rotate a forward drive bevel gear 88 and a reverse bevel gear 89/ These bevel gears rest on and drive horizontally disposed bevel gear 9| and this gear is pinned to'the ver'tical drive shaft 92. Normally the shaft 92 is engaged to a. drive gear 93 gear 94 and a third traction drive gear 96, but coupling of the drive pinion 93with the shaft 92 is afforded by means of a clutch 91, the jaws of which will either engage the low speed drive pinion 93 (Fig. 8) or a high speed drive pinion 98 (Fig. '1). The high speed drivepinion 98 in turn engages a high speed gear 99 and this gear 99 is fastened directly to the gear 94. g
In the high speed position of the clutch 91,
the gear 93 is disengaged by the clutch and the gear 98 is engaged in order to furnish a high speed of rotation to the traction gear 96.

Traction clutch I 68 is provided which is splined to the traction drive shaft I61 and in its engaged position engages the gear 96 to the shaft I61 to drive the crawler tracks, this drive being provided by, means of a bevel gear I68 on the lower end of the shaft I61 which engages the bevel gear I69. The bevel gear I69 is keyed to a shaft. II I and this shaft in turn drives cliain sprockets I I2 and 'I I3 located on the opposite ends of shaft I69. The chain sprockets H2 and I I3 are adapted to be driven by means of jaw clutches H4 and H6 andeither of the chain sprockets H2 or 3 or both may be driven by engaging the. clutches H4 or H6. The members II1 are stationary v brakes for preventing rotation of the respective shafts. The chain sprockets H2 and 3 drive chains 8 and "9 which in turn drive the large tread sprockets 31.
The train of gears 93, 94 and 96 will provide a low speed, suitable while the shovel is in use in excavating and where considerable power is required but low speeds are all that are necessary. In. transporting the shovel from one Job to another, it is desirable that a high speed be provided and this high speed is provided by meansv of the .high speed gears 98 and 99. In using the high speed gearing the jaw clutch 91 is raised to disengage the gear 93 and engage the gear 98.
Ifthe jaw clutch I64'is engaged to the gear 99 and the clutch 91 engaged to gear 98, the upper revolving frame will revolve at high speed. If the clutch I64 is engaged to gear 99 and the clutch 91 engaged to the gear. 93 the table wilL rotate at low speed. ,1: the clutch m is disengaged and the clutch I66 engaged and the Jaw 'engaged, the clutch I64 disengaged and clutch 91. engaged to gear- 93, the tracks will be driven at low speed with corresponding increase in power. Engagement and disengagement of the double. jaw clutch 91 1s accomplished by the' operator through manipulation of the lever I2| which is operatively engaged to the-clutch. The
machine is controlled by the group-of levers indicated generally at I22 in accordance with the usual practice.
Obviously, my invention may be applied to wheel type cranes and shovels, whether railway cranes, road type wheels, flanged rail wheels or various types of traction locomotion.
It is apparent that modifications may be made by those skilled in the art. Such modifications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope oi my invention as set forth in the I claim as my invention: I

In an excavating shovel, a lower frame, track rotatably mounted on the lower frame, means for driving the track, an upper frame shaft or the. swing shaft by rotatably mounted on the lower frame, a drive shaft for driving the track passing -down through the axis of rotation of the upper frame, a driven gear mounted for rotation on this vertical drive shaft, a clutch means for engaging th driven gear to the drive shaft, an idler shaft, a pair of gears on the idler shaft, one of which engages the. firstnamed gear, a a pair of gears on the drive shaft meshed with the first named pair of gears, and clutch means for engaging one or the other of the last named gears, and a prime mover operatively engaged for driving the drive shaft, the idler shaft adapted to be engaged with the pair of gears ounted thereon and cause the rotation of t e upper frame with respect to the lower frame.

In an excavating shovel, a lower frame, running gears on the lower frame, tracks on the running gears, and drive means for driving the track, a turntable rotatably mounted on the lower frame, a prime mover on the upper frame, .a power shaft. means for driving the power shaft/from the prime mover, ahoisting drum and crowd drum driven by the drive shaft, 9. reverse gear drive shaft driven from the main power shaft, bevel gearing, forward and reverse, driven by the reverse gear drive shaft, a first vertical shaft driven by the bevel gearing, a first gear train tical shaft.
