Claims. in]. 29-90) This invention relates to finishing and burnishing tools.
An object of this invention is to provide a tool for both finishing and burnishing on new or old crown bearings without chattering or showing tool marks on the bearing.
A further object of this invention isto provide a highly improved tool of the characterdescribed, which shall be relatively inexpensive to manufacture, which will eifect a saving of time and do better work and which shall yet be practical and efiicient to a high degree.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.

The same comprises a housing It having a longitudinal tubular portion l2, formed with an internally screw threaded portion l3 at its rear end. The front end of tubular portion I2 is constricted, as at l4, for the purpose hereinafter appearing.
Extending from said tubular portion I2, is a rear, downwardly extending, wall I5 formed with a central, vertical slot l6 and with a. pair of parallel, downwardly extending, walls l8 formed with inwardly extending. flanges l9.
Screwed to the rear, screw threaded portion l3 of the tubular portion II, is a screw plug 20, having a nut-head 2| formed with a longitudinal slot or kerf 22.
Disposed within the opposite end of the tubular portion I2, is a burnishing ball 24, held therein by the constricted portion l4 projecting from said tubular portion, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing.
Within the tubular portion I2 is a pusher roller 28 having a-concavesurface 23 at its front end, carrying a plurality of rollers 30 contion 42. Mounted between the members 28 and 40, is a coil compression spring 44, received on the reduced portions 33 and 42 of said members.
. The spring 44 keeps the rollers 30 in contact with the ball 24.
The inside of the tubular member l2 may be filled with grease or other lubricant to keep the parts well'lubricated. The lubricant may pass through the openings 32 and 4| of members 28 and 40.
Slidably mounted between the guide walls l8 and resting on the flanges IQ of the latter, is an elongated cutting tool 50, having a screwthreaded opening 5| at its rear end. Screwed within said screw threaded opening 5|, is the shank 52 of an adjusting screw 53. Said adjusting screw is formed with a head 54 at one end and with a collar 55 adjacent said head. The shank 56 interconnecting the head 54 with the collar 55, is slidably received in the slot I6 of rear wall 15. The front end of the tool 50 is provided with a cutting portion 60. The screw may be provided with micrometer readings on the head 54 thereof, if desired.
The ball 24 and spring 44 save the machine from wearing.
It will now be understood that the cutting tool may be adjusted by turning the screw 53. For this purpose, the slot 54 .may be formed with a slot or kerf 62.
The tubular portion [2 may be substantially square at the exterior thereof, but has a substantially cylindrical inner bore I2a.
It will now be understood that the improved finishing and burnishing tool may be used for simultaneously finishing and burnishing new or old crown bearings. These bearings have semi-cylindrical surfaces and parallel side walls extending from the semi-cylindricalportion of the bearing, Heretofore, the semi-cylindrical surfaces of ground bearings were separately finished and burnished in two successive operations. With the present device, the finishing and burnishing is accomplished in one operation. The tool embodying the invention may be mounted on a Bullard machine with the crown bearing mounted on the'machine with its axis Bullard machine in horizontal position, with the cutter below the burnisher. The semi-cylindrical surface is thus cut and the cut surface is burnished.
It will be further noted that the ball 24 keeps rolling through the burnishing operation so that the contact of the burnishing tool with the interior surface of the crown bearing is not at one point on the burnishing tool. Since the ball' keeps rolling it lastsv longer because the contact point, keeps changing. Furthermore, with the old burnishing tool which consisted of a bar of steel rounded at one end, it was impossible to burnish crown bearings after the grease grooves were cut because the contact of the tool with the edges of the grease grooves caused chattering, which is eliminated with the present device because the ball may be pushed back against the spring.
It' will be noted further that the relationship between the'cutter 50 and the ball 24 is adjusted by the screw 53. The ball in practice is kept between fourteen and twenty thousands of an inch further out than the edge of the cutting tool, although any suitable adjustment may be made. The ball is above the cutter so as to burnish the cut surface. I
It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of theabove invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In combination, a finishing and burnishing tool of the character described, comprising a housing having a tubular portion, and parallel guide walls extending therefrom and disposed longitudinally thereof, and co-extensive therewith, a ball within said tubular portion and projecting therefrom, spring means within said tubular portion to urge said ball in one direction, a cutting tool slidably mounted between said guide walls, and means to adjust said cutting tool longitudinally thereof, the cutting end of the cutting tool projecting from the same end of the housing as the ball. l
2. A burnishing tool of the character described, comprising a housing having a tubular portion, constricted at one end, a ball within said end and projecting therefrom, and held from coming out by said constricted portion, a member within said tubular portion carrying a. plurality of rollers contacting said ball, a spring within said tubular portion adapted to press against said member, and means to adjust the pressure of said spring,

A burnishing tool of the character described, comprising a housing having a tubular portion, constricted at one end, a, ball within said end and projecting therefrom, and held from coming out by said constricted portion, a member within said tubular portion carrying a plurality of rollers contacting said ball, a spring within said tubular portion adapted to press against said member, and means to adjust the pressure of said spring, said member being formed with a longitudinal through opening.

A burnishing tool of the character described, comprising a housing having a tubular portion formed with an internally screw threaded portion at one end, and a constricted portion at the other end, a screw plug within said screw threaded portion, a ball within said constricted end projecting beyond said tubular portion, and held from coming'out by said constricted portion, a pusher within said tubular portion, a plurality of rollers carried by said pusher and contacting said ball, a second pusher within said tubular portion, contacting said screw plug, and a spring interposed between said pushers.
5. A burnishing tool of the character described,
comprising a housing having a tubular portion formed with an internally screw threaded portion at one end, and a constricted portion at the other end, a screw plug within said screw threaded portion, a ball within said constricted end projecting beyond said tubular portion, and held from coming out by said constricted portion, a pusher within said tubular portion, .a plurality of rollers carried by said pusher and contacting said ball, a second pusher within said tubular portion, contacting said screw plug, a spring interposed between said pushers, and said pushers being formed with longitudinal through openings.

A burnishing and finishing tool of the character described, comprising a housing having a tubular portion formed with an internallly screw threaded portion at one end, and a constricted portion at the other end, a screw plug within said screw threaded portion, a ball within said constricted end projecting beyond said tubular portion, and held from coming out by said constricted portion, a pusher within said tubular portion, a plurality of rollers carried by said pusher and contacting said ball, a second pusher within said tubular portion contacting said screw plug, a spring interposed between said pushers, and said pushers being formed with longitudinal through openings, said tubular portion being formed with a plurality of longitudinal, parallel walls, and a wall perpendicular to said parallel walls, and disposed at one end thereof, said parallel walls being formed with aligned inwardly extending flanges, .a longitudinal cutting tool slidably mounted on and between said parallel walls and resting on said aligned flanges and being formed with a cutting portion at one end, the ball and the cutting end of the cutting tool projecting from the same end of the housing.

A burnishing and finishing tool of the character described, comprising a housing having a tubular portion formed with an internally-screw threaded portion at one end, and a constricted portion at the other end, a screw plug within said screw threaded portion, a ball within said constricted end projecting beyond said tubular portion, and held from coming out by said constricted portion, a pusher within said tubular portion, a plurality of rollers carried by said pusher and contacting said ball, a second pusher within said tubular portion, contacting said screw plug, a spring interposed between said pushers, and said pushers being formed with longitudinal through openings, said tubular portion being formed with a plurality of longitudinal, parallel walls, and a wall perpendicular to said parallel walls, and disposed at one end thereof, said parallel walls being formed with aligned, inwardly extending flanges, a longitudinal cutting tool slidably mounted on and between said parallel walls and resting on said aligned flanges and being formed with a cutting portion at one end, and a member slidably and rotatably mounted on said perpendicular wall, and having a screw threaded shank having screw threaded engagement .with
said cutting tool, said ball and the cutting end of the cutting tool projecting. from the same end 01 said housing.
8. A combination finishing and burnishing tool comprising a housing, said housing having parallel co-extensive guide portions, a cutter within one of said guide portions, the cutting end of said cutter projecting from one end of said guide portion, a ball mounted in the other of said guide portions and projecting therefrom, the projecting portion of the ball being disposed adjacent the projecting cutting end of the cutter.

A combination finishing and burnishing tool comprising a housing, said housing having parallel co-extensive guide portions, a cutter within one of said guide portions, the cutting end of said cutter projecting from one end of said guide portion, a ball mounted in the other of said guide portions, and projecting therefrom, the projecting portion ofthe ball being disposed adjacent the projecting cutting end of the cutter, and means for adjustably moving the cutter relative to the housing, to vary the position of the cutting end thereof relative to'the ball.
10. A combination finishing and burnishing tool comprising a housing, said housing having parallel co-extensive guide portions, a cutter within one of said guide portions, the cutting end of said cutter projecting from one end of said guide portion, a ball mounted in the other of said guide portions, and projecting therefrom, the projecting portion of the ball being disposed adjacent the projecting cutting end of the cutter, means for adjustably moving the cutter relative to the housing, to vary the position of the cutting end thereof relative to the ball, a spring within said second guide portion to press against said ball, and means to adjust the tension of said spring.
