The present invention also relates to the construction of the/head itself. and is concerned with providing for a very thin cutting portion and a `strong truss-like central portion. For this purpose, the central portion oi the head is made plano-convex so that it gradually thickens from the center outwardly. and preferably the convexl 19 side is outside because the slight protuberance formed thereby, when applied to the face, tends to draw the skin inwardly toward the annular slotted marginal vcrtions.

.As above stated, the present invention is illustrated as applied to the type of shaving machine disclosed in my copending application Serial No. 192,765, :lied February 26, 1938. Within the head and casing there is rotatably mounted a cutter member I9 carried by a sleeve 20 rotatably supported in the casing and driven by the shaft II. The cutter member I9, in the form shown, comprises a at strip supported edgewise in slots 2i in the sleeve 20 and extends ead and casing. It is urged upwardly by a spring 22 so that its cutting surfaces 23 will engage the interior surface of the slotted portions of the head and cooperate with the walls of the slots I8 to shear olf hairs extending through the slots.

In the use of this device, as disclosed in my copending application Serial No. 192,765, filed February 26, 1938, hairs may enter the slots both from the face portion I6 and from the side wall portion l'I as the head is traversed over` the surface of the skin to be shaved. The slots in the side wall permit long hairs to enter with great facility, and also permit the hairs on the face, and other parts where the skin is rather tight, to be clipped very short, It may be used with equal facility in shaving the underpart of the chin and the vneck where the skin is tender, but

the skin should be held taut to prevent loose skin from entering the slots at the corner of the head-that is to say, the place where the portion4 or" the slot which is in the face of the head joins AWith the portion of the slot which is in the side 'f'ryall of the head. However, to avoid the necessity of using 'care and of tightening the skin on the neck and other parts where the skin is tender and loose, the present invention provides an auxiliary guard member which may be easily slipped into place when it is desired to shave those parts of the skin and which may be easily removed when'.

shaving the other parts of the skin, Since care and pulling of the iiesh and skin is not necessary when the auxiliary guard of the present invention is employed, the shaving operation may be performed much more rapidly and yet a satisfacv tory shave may be obtained, although, in many instances, the shaving of the tender parts with the auxiliary guard of the present invention will not be quite as close as the shaving of the other parts without the use of the auxihary guard oi this invention.

As shown in Figs. l, 2 and 3, the auxiliary guard may be in the form of a solid ring 26S, the inner surface of which is of such size and shape as to snugly t over the side Walls Si oi the head and substantially cover the side walls. The front surface 25 of the ring is preferably ush with the face I6 of the ring, or atleast the slotted portion thereof,\so that the ring will not interfere with theoperation of pressingthe face portion i6 'of the head close to the skin to be shaved. If desired. the inner portion oi' the ring may be slightly chamfered olf to provide a bevel 2S which will permit the hairs to stand up and be in position to enter the slots i8 in the face of the head as the head progresses over the skin to be shaved.

ciently to be engaged by the cutter member IS.

In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, it does, however, permit the hairs to enter the slots at the comer between the falce and the side walls.

As shown in Fig. 4, the ring 24 may have a wider bevel 2l which may be used by persons whose skin is not quite so tender and loose, or where the person is willing to exercise greater care in shaving the tender parts of the face, and other parts of the body.

'In the form of the invention shown ln Fig. 5, instead of having it solid, the ring 28 is made of a sheet metal piece having a portion 29 slidably fitting the side walls I1 of the head, and having another portion 30 substantially ush with the face portion I6 of the head. This ring has still another portion in the form of a flange 3l extending beyond the clamping ring I5, so that the guard ring may be easily stripped oif the head when it is desired to remove it.

As shown in Fig. 6, the guard ring 32 is also of sheetmetal, and has a portion 33 slidably ntting the side walls Il of the head, but, instead of the upper portion being spaced from the corner of the face and side walls, it has a flange 31| extending inwardly to cover the corner. The guard ring is comparatively thin and lies substantially in the plane of the face I6 of the head,

`but it positively prevents the slotted corner from being forced into the skin. This form of auxillary guard may be employed Where the skin is so tender that it must not be shaved too closely. The guard ring 33 also has a portion 35 extendlng beyond the clamping ring i6 so that the guard ring may be easily removed from the head.

In the form of the invention herein disclosed, the ring has a bottom portion 36 adapted to engage the top of the clamping ring I5 to thereby determine the normal position of the guard ring on the headthat is to say, that the outer surface of the guard is in predetermined relation to the faceof the cutter. However, if desired, the user may arrange for the outer surface of the ring to project above the face I6 of the head by not pressing the ring all the way on the head.

According to present invention, instead of having the central depressed portion Si?, the head may have a raised portion iid shown in Fig. 3. raised portion is preferably convex so as to press into the skin and flesh as the razor is traversedl across the surface being shaved. it is also preferably thicker at the center' than it is at the edges so as to give strength and rigidity to the head, and, as shown, it may be plain convex, having a fiat inner surface 3Q. in this case, so as to avoid the rictional contact of the entire movable blade with the head, the blade d@ has a central concave portion di.

Variations and modifications may be made within the scope of this invention and portions of the improvements may be used without others.

I claim:

l. A shaving machine for personal use comprising a holloar circular head having closely spaced narrow radial hairoreceiving slots in the annular marginal and peripheral wall portions thereof; a support for said head having a threaded portion and a flat end surface for engaging the inner end of the head; a ilange on the head; a clamping ring threaded on said support and asiatico having a flange to engage the flange on the head and secure the headto the support; a rotary cutter mounted within said support and head and having shearing edges cooperating with the interior edges of the walls of said slots in the annular marginal and peripheral wall .portions of the head to shear off hairs extending therethrough; and a guard ring slidably mounted on the Vperipheral wall ofthe head and having an inner. portion engaging said clamping ring to position the same on said peripheral wall, said guard'ring having an outer portion located closely adjacent the junction of the face and the slotted peripheral wall of the head to prevent loose skin from extending into the portions'of the slots in the peripheral wall of the head.

2. A shaving machine for personal use comprising a hollow circular head having closely spaced narrow radialhair-receiving slots in the annular marginal and peripheral. wall portions thereof; a. support for said head having a threaded portion and a flat end sur-face for engaging the inner end of the head; a flange on the head; a clamping ring threaded on said support and having a flange to engage the flange on the head and secure the head to the support; a rotary cutter mounted within said support and head and having shearing edges cooperating with the interior edges of the Walls of said slots in the annular marginal and lperipheral wall portions of the head to shear off hairs extending therethrough; 4and a guard ring slidably mounted on the peripheral Wall of the head and having an inner portion engaging saidclamping ring and an outer portion located closely adjacent the junction of the slotted annular and marginal peripheral wall portions 'of the head to prevent loose skin from extending into the portions of the slots in the peripheral wall of the head, said guard ring having a projecting flange by means of which it may be manually slid on and off the head.

3. A shaving machine for personal use cornprlsing a hollow circular head 'having closely spaced narrow radial hair-receiving slots in the annular marginal and peripheral wall portions thereof; a support for said head having a threaded portion and a flat end surface for engaging the inner end of the head; a flange on the head; a clamping ring threaded on said support and having `a flange to engage the flange on the head and secure the head to the support; a rotary cutter mounted within said support and head and having shearing edges cooperating with the interior edges of the walls of said slots in the annular marginal and peripheral wall portions of the head to shear off hairs extending therethrough; and a guard ring slidably mounted on the peripheral wall of the head and having an inner portion engaging said clamping ring and an outer portion located closely adjacent the junction of the slotted annular and marginal peripheral Wall portions of the head to prevent loose skin from extending into the yportions of the slots in the peripheral wall of the head, said guard ring at its outer end having a projecting flange -by means of which it may be manuallyv slid on and cil the head. l

4. A shaving machine for personal use comprising a hollow circular head having closely spaced narrow radici hair-receiving slots in the annular marginal and peripheral wall portions thereof; a support for said head having a threaded portion and a fiat end surface for engaging the inner end of the head; a flange on the head; a clamping ring threaded on said support and having a flange to engage the flange on the head and secure the head to the support; a rotary cutter mounted within said support and head and having shearing edges cooperating with the interior edges of the Walls of said slots in the annular marginal and peripheral wall portions of the head to shear oil hairs extending therethrough; and a guard ring slidably mounted on the peripheral wall of the head and having an inner portion engaging said clamping ring and an outer portion located closely adjacent thejunction of the slotted annular and marginal peripheral wall portions of the head to prevent loose skin from extending into the portions of the slots in the -peripheral wall of the head, said guard ring at its inner end having a projecting flange 'by means of which it may yloe manuallyslid on and off the head.

5 A shaving machine for personal use comprising aI hollow circular head having closely spaced narrow radial hair-receiving slots in the annular marginal and peripheral wall portions thereof; a support for said head having a threaded portion and a flat end surface .for engaging the inner end of the head; a flange on the head; a clamping ring threaded on said support and having a flange to engage the flange on the head and secure the head to the support; a rotary cutter mounted within said support and head and having shearing edges cooper-ating with the interior edges of the walls of said slots in the annular marginal and peripheral wall .portions of the head to shear off hairs extending `therethrough; and a guard ring slidably mounted on the peripheral wall of the head, said ring having a portion engaging said' clamping ring when mounted on said wall to position a portion thereof so as to lie substantially flush with the face of the head and closely adjacent the slotted peripheral wall thereof to prevent loose skin from extending into the portions of the slots in the .peripheral wall of the head.

6. A shaving machine for personal use comprising a hollow circular head having closely spacednarrow radial hair-receiving slots in the annular marginal and peripheral wall portions thereof; a support for said head having a threaded portion and a flat end surface for engaging the inner end of the head; `a flange onthe head; .a clamping ring threaded on said support and having a flange to engage the flange on the head and secure 'the head to the support; a rotary cutter mounted within said support and head and having shearing edges cooperating with the interior edges of the walls of said slots 1n the annular marginal and peripheral wall portions of the head to shear off hairs extending therethrough; and a guard ring slid-ably mounted on the .peripheral wall ofthe head and having an inner portion engaging said clamping ring and an outer portion overlying the junction of the `face and the slotted peripheral wall of the head to prevent loose skin from extending into the portions of the slot in the Peripheral wall of the head.
