ATTORNEY yrepresents improvements over the Patented June 17, 1941 ori-TCE ROLLER Robert G.
R. G. Le fornia Application December 31, 193s, serial No.
. Z Claims. This invention relates to multiple-unit ground Le Tournean, Tonrneau, Inc
Peoria, ll., assignor to a corporation of Cali--4 rollers of the self adjusting type, and particularly my Patent No. 1,794,696, dated March 3, 1931. One of thev objects of the present invention is to simplify and yet strengthen the mounting of the alined rollers in iiexible connection with each other and to arrange the connecting and mounting-means so that one or more rollers may be added to or removed from the assembly easily and at will and as operating conditions may demand.
I Although by no means limited to any particular form ofroller, the structure is especially intended to be used with'sheeps-foot rollers such as are used in rolling and packing ground after grading operations on projects of various kinds. y
In a roller of this type, it is a further object speciiication and claims. f
In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views:
Figure 1 is a top plan of a mu1tiple-unit roller frame and tongue assembly, with one of the frame units disconnected. v
Figure 2 is a diagrammatic front view of the structure showing the rollers conforming to varying transverse ground contours.
Figure 3 is an enlarged foot roller and frame unit, shown in connectionV with the draft tongue.
Figure 4 is a top plan view of a roller foot.
Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmentaryvvertical section of the multiple unit structure, taken on line 5 5 of Fig. 3. l
Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawings, each roller supporting frame unit comprises front and back beams I spaced apart suiiicient to receive the roller 2 therebetween and longer than said roller, a side or end beam 3 connecting beamsl at one end and .on the level of said beams, and another side or end beam 4 connecting'thev beams l I at the other end and disposed below the same.
The beams 3 and 4 are provided centrally of their length and on their inner faces with hori- ,side view of a sheepszontally alined clamping supports 5 for the rollershaft` .6, the roller turning on the shaft with anti-friction bearings 1 therebetween as shown in Fig. 5.
The beams I at one end are provided with hinge ears 8 projecting so as tooverlap the outside of the relatively opposite end of the beams I of an adjacent frame unit, while cooperating hinge ears' 9 projectfrom the opposite ears 8. Removv project 'through correspondears. 'I'he length or jection of ears Bbeyond they beams I is such that when the hinge pins are in place the adjacent end beams 3 and 4 of adjacent frame units overlap each other as shown in Fig. 5, so that the rollers may come as close together as possible.
The frame units multiples of two with the center The draft tongue Il is connected to the central pair of frames these lugs as well as through the ears.y tongue is therefore rigid with the frames as longitudinal and lateral dis,- swivel in a vertical plane relative to each other and to the tongue.
From the above description it will be seen that all the roller frames are the case, each foot I3 is a hollow extent of proare preferably employed in the sheeps-foot type without being excessively heavy; shape insures a the present and From the foregoing description it will be read` ily seen that I have produced such a device as substantially fullls the objectsof the invention a as set forth herein.
While this specication sets forth in detail preferred construction of the device, still in practice such deviations from such v frames and termin overlaps the lower side beam resorted to as do not form a the spirit of the invention, as deiined by the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I and desire to secure by detail may be departure from claim as `new and useful Letters Patent is:
1. In a multiple unit roller, av pair in allned side by side side beam and another side beam tied to-the otlieberid of the front beam on a level above that of the first named side beam, the frames bein d1!- d so that the upper side beam of one frame of -the other frame. the front beams plane lengthand hinge means 'connecting for relative swivel movement in a wise of said front beam.
2.. A structure asfin claim 1, with roller-shaft e 'inner faces of the side beams, and extending `between -the side beams of th ting adjacent said inner faces of the beamsl f o ROBERT G. LE ".lOUl'tN'EAU.`
