Patented June 10, 1941 UNETED STATES parser UFFICE CURTAIN AND sire-rhea DRAPERIES Rudolf Loeb, Jenkintowmfa. Application September 4, 1940, Serial No. 355,384
6 Claims.
My invention relates to curtains and/or similar draperies.
One object of my invention is to provide means whereby the vertical edges and other portions of curtains and/or similar draperies may hang or drape in perfectly straight lines.
A further object of my invention is to improve the side edges or .margins of curtains and/or similar draperies to effect this desired straight hanging.
And a still further object of my invention is to provide a relatively stout and more or less stiff filler which may be in the shape of a cord or a braid that will be arranged within the folded edge of the curtain or other drapery and be retained in position by a line of stitching disposed alongside the filler member paralleling the edge of the curtain or other drapery.
The cord or other filler may be of a neutral shade or substantially colorless, or of the color of the curtain so that no change in appearance so far as color is concerned will be evident. I may, however, provide a colored cord or other filler that will serve to enhance the ornamental appearance or character of the curtain edge.
These and other features of my invention are more fully set forth hereinafter; reference being had to the accompanying drawing, more or less diagrammatic in character, in which:
Figure 1 is a view of a portion of a curtain, partly broken away, illustrating the character of the improved marginal edge forming the subject of my invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary view of the curtain edge, partly in section, illustrating the manner under one arrangement of enclosing the cord or other filler member at the edge of the same.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line IIIIII, Fig. 2, and
Figs. 4 and 5 are views similar to Fig. 3, illustrating other types of construction within the scope of my invention.
Curtains and similar draperies, especially those made of silk, rayon, acetates, and similar natural or synthetic fabrics have a tendency to wrinkle at the vertical margins or edges of the same. For the purpose of preventing this wrinkling, I propose to stiffen to a certain degree and/or weight or stabilize the marginal edges of curtains of this type so that they may hang in straight lines from top to bottom.
In Fig. 1, a form of curtain is indicated at Ill, which may be hung from a rod I I, in any usual or effective manner, with or without a flounce or heading [2. The side or marginal edge of the curtain is indicated at l3, and in the present instance it consists simply of a turned over portion Ill of the material of the curtain; the free end of the same being simply turned in as indicated at lo and held to the body of the curtain by one or more rows of stitches, as indicated at M. While I have shown a single fold of the free edge as lfi it will be understood that such edge may be further folded against the body of the material without departing from my invention.
Within the folded edge of the curtain I introduce a cord or other similar member or element, indicated at l5, of relatively stout material of any suitable character. It will have slightly more weight than the amount of the curtain material directly adjacent the same, and it will be continuous. In all instances, however, it should be of such a nature as not to change its form or characteristics in any cleaning operation to which it may be necessary to subject the curtain if the same becomes soiled. It must be either nonshrinkable, or shrinkable in consonance with the curtain material with which it is used.
This cord or other filler is arranged directly adjacent the fold of the marginal edge, as clearly indicated in the drawing and it is retained in this position by a line of stitching l6, which parallels the folded edge of the curtain.
In Figs. 2 and 3, the filler is shown in the form of a cord of substantially circular cross section. It will be understood however that I may employ any suitable cross section for this filler, and in Fig. 4 I have shown a filler in the form of a braid, indicated at I5 which will be maintained in the desired position at the folded marginal edge of the curtain in the same manner as the circular cord illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3. In lieu of securing the filler in place by a row of stitches such as indicated at "5, I may stitch directly through the cord, as indicated at lfi This line of stitching may be in addition to the line indicated by the dotted lines, or may be the sole means for holding the filler in place.
The presence of the cord or braid filler or other similar element at the folded marginal edge of the curtain gives a body to such edge not possessed by the folded material itself, slightly weights such edge and effectually prevents wrinkling of the same; insuring that the edge will hang in a perfectly straight line.
It is within the scope of my invention to provide a plurality of filler members in the folded edge of the curtain, which may be in the form of cords or braids, and that such cords or braids may be relatively confined in pockets made by rows of stitching paralleling the folded edge of the curtain, but without passing thru the filler members. In all instances, I prefer that the filler members or elements shall be continuous from top to bottom of the curtain. In lieu of the pockets for the cord or other filler member, the stitching may pass through the same, If desired, the filler member, whether of cord or braid, may be continued in the same relative position in the lower hem or folded edge of the curtain, as indicated at 5 Fig. 1.
It will be understood of course that the accompanying drawing and description are for illustrative purposes only, and that modifications may be made in the improved arrangement I have disclosed without departing from the spirit of my invention; all of which is deemed to be within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a curtain structure having a folded edge at the vertical margin of the same, a continuous filler disposed within said folded edge, and a plurality of lines of stitching paralleling the folded edge and securing the same to the curtain body; one of said lines of stitching serving to maintain the filler against said folded marginal edge.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a curtain structure having a folded edge at the vertical margin of the same and a folded edge at the bottom thereof, a continuous filler disposed within each of said folded edges, and a plurality of lines of stitching paralleling each of the folded edges and securing the same to the curtain body; one line of each of said sets of stitches serving 'to maintain a filler against a folded marginal edge.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a curtain having an edge folded over against itself with the inner edge of said folded over portion again folded, a row of stitches securing said infolded edge, a filler element disposed within said folded over portion and engaging the fold at the marginal edge of the curtain, and a line of stitches passing through the curtain and paralleling the firstmentioned row of stitches and securing said filler element against said folded marginal edge.
4. As a new article of manufacture, a curtain having one of its side marginal edges and its bottom marginal edge folded over against itself with the inner edges of said folded over portions again folde'd, a row of stitches securing each of said infolded edges, a filler element disposed within each of said folded over portions and engaging the folds at the marginal edges of the curtain, and a line of stitches passing through the curtain and paralleling each of the first-mentioned rows of stitches and securing said filler elements against said folded marginal edges.
5. As a new article of manufacture, a curtain having a folded marginal edge, a continuous cord disposed within said edge, and a line of stitching passing through the cord to position the same with respect to the curtain and serving to cause the same to hang in a straight line.
6. As a new article of manufacture, a curtain having a folded edge at the vertical margin of the same, a continuous filler element extending lengthwise of said edge and enclosed within the same at the fold, and a row of stitches passing through the filler element and the curtain to retain the filler element in place adjacent to the folded edge.
