This invention relates to an umbrella, holder designed primarily for attachment to a mail bag suspended from the shoulder of and for the purpose of holding an umbrella in protecting relation with respect to a letter carrier or postman and his mail bag, but it is to be understood that an umbrella holder, in accordance with this invention is for employment in any connection for which it may be found applicable.

The invention aims to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, an umbrella holder for detachable connection respectively to an umbrella and the mail bag of a letter carrier or postman for the purpose of maintaining the umbrella upstanding and in such relation to the carrier or postman whereby when the umbrella is open it will act as a. protecting medium, in inclement weather for the carrier and his mail bag.

The invention further aims to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, an umbrella holder for the purpose referred to which is capable of being expeditiously attached and detached to and from a mail bag and formed with a director portion to provide for the umbrellaor parasol being disposed in proper relation with respect to the carrier irrespective of suspending the bag from either shoulder of the carrier.

The invention further aims to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a holder for the purpose referred to which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, compact, thoroughly efficient in its use, expeditiously attached to and detached from a mail bag when occasion requires and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.

Embodying the aims aforesaid and others which may be hereinafter referred to, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications may be resorted to which fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.

Figure l is a side elevation showing an umbrella holder, in accordance with this invention, and the adaptation thereof with respect to an umbrella for holding the latter, and further showing the holder attached to and supported by a. mail bag. The latter being broken away and partly shown in vertical section,

Figure 2 is a fragmentary view partly in elevation and partly in vertical section illustrating the umbrella staff, the holder supporting the latter and a mail bag attached to and supporting the holder,

The holder, in accordance with this invention, is generally indicated at 5 and it is formed of a single body consisting of an attaching element 6 and a coupling element I extended from the outer end of element 6. The latter is for detachably connecting the holder 5 to a letter-carriers or postmans mail bag 8.

As is well known the body of mail bags, now generally used by letter carriers is formed of a pair of outer sections and a central section. The outer sections provide the sides and the central section, the bottom and ends of the bag. The marginal portions of the sides and bottom of the outer sections are secured to the lengthwise marginal portions of the central section in such a manner whereby the interior of the bag is formed with a pair of spaced parallel heavy seams of like form, one of which is indicated 9, Figures 2 and 4.

The element 6 includes a set of hollow coupling members or arms of bar-like form of the desired length and diameter. The number of the members of the set are four and indicated at i0, II, i2 and I3. The members Ill and II are disposed in parallel spaced relation. The members I2 and i3 are disposed in parallel spaced relation. The members I0, I I are disposed at right angles to and spaced from the members I2, I3. The inner or lower ends of said members preferably will be closed and they are so shown. The outer or upper ends of the members II, I2 and I3 are closed. The outer or upper end of the member I0 is open as indicated at I4. The members Ill, II, I2 and I3 at their upper or outer terminal portion are secured to and disposed relatively to a head piece I5 whereby the latter maintains said members in spaced relation with respect to each other. The head piece I5 is flush with the closed upper or outer ends of the members II, I2 and I3. The member I0 is of slightly greater length than and extends a short distance beyond the upper or outer ends of the others of the said members, as indicated at I6. A portion of the material forming the head piece I5 is secured to the extended end portion I6 of the member I0, as indicated at I'I. The members I0, I I, IZ and. I3 preferably will be formed from any light metallic material. The latter may be tubular or solid, but is shown by way of example as tubular. When the element 6 is attached to the bag 8 the head piece I5 is capable of seating on a top edge portion of the bag.

The element 'I is an integral continuation of the upper or outer end of the member iii; it is tubular and open at its upper or outer end. The element 'I is formed of a single length of material bent to form an elbow shaped inner or lower end part I 8, a flared yoke-shaped intermediate part i9 and a straight upper or outer end part 29. The bight 2l of the part EQ is curved substantially to conform to the segment of a circle. The arms 22, 23 of the part I9 are disposed at opposite outward inclinations and merge at corresponding ends into the bight 2i. The inclination of the arm 22 being less than that of arm 23. The arm 22 merges into the outer end of the part I8. The inner end of part I8 merges into the outer end of member i The arm 23 merges into the inner or lower end of the part 2t and is of greater length than the arm 22. The part 23 is formed lengthwise thereof with a series of spaced endwise aligned rectangular slots 2d. The part 2t constitutes a socket.

The umbrella or parasol which is torbe supported by the holder is to have its staff, stick or shaft cut off to a point in proximity to its resilient latch to provide for the staff to be extended into the socket provided bythe part 2G of element 1. 25, its cut-off staff at Z, its resilient latch carried by the staff at 2.1 and its extendible and retractible cover at 28.

The distance between members i6, I l is such Vthat when disposed interiorly `of the bag they will be positioned on opposite sides .of a seam of the bag, and this statement applies to the members i2, i3.

When the umbrella is to be supported by the holder, a portion of the stair 2E is insertedin the socket 29 and the latching member 2l is to oorrelate with a slot 2li, as is shown by Figure 3, whereby the umbrella will be latched to the holder.A

With reference toY Figures l and 2, there is shown one arrangement of the holder being attached to the bag, and in this connection the member Iii is arranged against the outer face of the bag body, the members I2, I3 against the inner face of the bag body on opposite sides of a seam, the head piece I5 over the top edge of the bag body and the member Ii rearwardly oi the members l2, i3.

Figure 4 illustrates another arrangement of `the holder relative to the bag body and in this connection member l2 is arranged exteriorly of the bag body, members it, II within the latter on opposite sides of a seam and member I3 rearwardly of the members I, lI.

In both positions aforesaid the substantially horizontally disposed yoke-shaped part i9 will be directed towards the letter carrier or postman and the umbrella or parasol is always disposed at proper positions irrespective of which seam of the bag the holder is correlated with when the latter is mounted in position.

Thevholder also constitutes a rest for the letter carrier or postman and in this connection he can have the palm of one hand on part I9, Which does not hinder holding letters in the same hand, and when the hand is in such position it serves to steady the umbrella Vor parasol more or to shift the latter to where rain is coming down.

The members l and Il correlate with the head piece l5 to form an inverted yoke. The members i2 and I3 coact with the head piece I5 to form an inverted yoke disposed at right angles f to the yoke formed by the members Ill, II and the head piece i5. The bight of each yoke is formed by the head piece I5 and the arms of a yoke by the members Id, l'i or the members i2, i3. The head piece l5 and members Il), II, i2 i3 provide the attaching element 'I and such element is formed with four selectable couplers, each coupler consisting of each arm of one yoke correlating with the arms of th other yoke.

Although the umbrella or parasol is shown as being detachably connected to the holder, yet it is to be understood that it may be permanently secured thereto.

What I claim is:

In an umbrella holder for letter carriers, an upstanding attachment element formed of a head piece and a series of arms extending downwardly from said head piece and disposed in spaced relation to one another and forming in connection with said head piece a pair of inverted yokes disposed at right angles to each other, each arm of one yoke being disposed in parallel spaced relation to and correlated with an arm of the other yoke to provide a coupler, said couplers being selectable for straddling and Vseating on a selected part of the top edge of the body of a mail bag to thereby dispose one such coupler with one arm thereof exteriorly and its other arm interiorly of said body and to dispose the other coupler within the bag body against the inner face of the latter to bind said element against said bag body, and a tubular upstanding umbrella supporting element of rod-like iorm having vertically disposed upper and lower terminal portions and an intermediate portion substantially of yoke-like form having a lower outwardly directed horizontal part merging at its inner end into the upper end of the lower terminal portion and an upper inwardly directed part merging into the lower end of lthe upper terminal portion, the said lower end terminal portieri of said supporting element being connected to and forming an upward continuation oi one of said arms of said series of arms` FRED KLAASSEN.
