i portable steam-engine combining the features of lightness, durability, and cheapness to obtain the required strength with the least material and least labor in fitting.
The invention consists in a vertical steamengine having the base, column, pedestal, cylinder, and steam-chest cast in one piece and tted lwith the cylinder-head and cross-head guides, that are cast inone piece, whereby the required strength is obtained and there is but a single joint to be fitted also, in the construction and manner of applying the connectingrod, and in a novel construction of the crossliead guides and bearings, all of which features I will describe more particularly in con- `nection with the accompanying drawings,

'Ihe base c, column b, pedestal c, cylinder d, and steam-chest c are all cast in one piece in the form as shown.
The head f of the cylinder is cast with the vertical guides g g of the cross-head h, which guides are united at the top by an arch.
By this construction the casting is done and the engine can be set up and fitted with less labor than is required when the parts are made separate. l
The connecting-rod i is made in one piece, of malleable iron or steel, in the form of a yoke. The two upper ends are connected rigidly by nuts to the ends of a vibrating crossbar, k, that is held in an adjustable bearing, l, in the center of cross-head h, and the lower end of the rod i is connected with the crank of the main shaft a beneath the cylinder d.
By this constructionA there is less friction than when the bearing is at each end of a e cross-beam, and the application of the power is directly in line with the piston.
The guides g g of the. cross-head are each formed with a V-shaped groove, and instead of the common slide I make 'use of elasticfaced rollers m, made of steel coveredy with rubber, and held in slots in the cross-head by steel pins, on which they turn. These rollers m are of suchdiameter that they make one revolution at each stroke, and by their use there is but a small amount of friction.
The construction shown gives'a connectingrod longer than usual inproportion to the height of the engine, thereby reducing the side strain and friction on the guides and rollers of the cross-head.
The piston-head (shown separately in Figs. 4 and `5) consists of plates or disks a n, connected together by screws entering the posts o on one plate, and carrying between them the outer expansible packing-rings, p, inner ringsegments, q, and expansion-wedges r. These wedges r wedge between the segments q and posts o, and areretained in place by radial spring-arms s, that project from the central hub, and are set up by screws t.
The above-described construction furnishes an engine durable in all its parts, comparatively light, and inexpensive.
By casting the pedestal, cylinder, and steamchest in one piece there is a saving in bolts and the labor of fitting joints, and the structure is very lirm. Y
The construction described is especially adapted to a vertical engine, and the engine,
by reason of its lightness andcompactness, can be used to great advantge on steamboats.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- A l. In a vertical engine, the base a, column b, pedestal c, cylinder d, and steam-chest e, made in one casting, combined with the head f, cast with the guides g and attached upon the cylinder d, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2.' The elastic rollers m, in combination with the cross-head h and V-shaped guides g, substantially as and for the purposes described.
