Description
UNITE STATES PATENT ()FFIGE.
JOHNL. BATES, OF FRANKLIN, ARKANSAS.
wATER-wHE EL SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 224,128, dated February 3, 1880. Application filed September 25,1879. I
' Be it known that I, JOHN L. BATES, of-
Franklin, in the county of Izard and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new-and useful Improvemen ts in Water-Wheels; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accom panyin g draw ings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in turbine water-wheels; and it has for its object to utilize the hydraulic pressureor head of the water derived from a suitable source or supply, and after this pressure has been fully exerted to utilize the weight of the water to exert additional power; and-to this end my invention consists in a vertical shaft mounted or journaled in a suit-ablecasing, and
carrying .two wheels, the upper one of which is provided with a series of radial bladesand the lower one with a series of spiral blades,
the casing being divided by a partial horizou- 7 ml partition in such manner that the inflowing water will act on the upper wheel and the outflowing water on the lower wheel, as more fully hereinafter specified.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a top view of my improved vapparatus with a portion of the casing broken away, and Fig. 2
a side elevation opened to illustrate the working parts of the wheel.
The letter A indicates the .casin g, which is made in two parts, a and b. B indicates a vertical shaft, journaled in bearings c d in the casing A. j o
- The letter 0 indicates a series of radial blades secured to the upper part of the shaft B, and adapted to rotate in the upper part of the casing A, the said blades thus mounted constituting the upper wheel. 4
The letter 1) indicates the water-inlet, which may be connectedwith any suitable watersupply in any convenient manner. Said waterinlet is provided with a gate, e, which is mounted on a suitable shaft extending through the top of the casing, and provided with gearing g,.by which said gate may be opened or closed. portion of the casing A, the said upper portion being partially separated from the lower por- .tion by means of a horizontal half-partition, E.
The letter G indicates aseries ofspiral blades secured to the shaft B in the lower portion of the casingA, the said casing being open at its bottom to provide for the ready escape of water.
Theoperation of my invention is as follows: Water being let in at tlle-water-inlet enters the upper chamber in the casing formed bythe half-partition and exerts its hydraulic pressure upon said wheel. Escaping, it reaches the point h, and falling upon the spiral wheel in the lower part of the casing, its weight causes said wheel to move'in the same direction 'as the upper wheel, thus augmenting the power of the apparatus.
Having thus described my invention and its mode of operation, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is---- of said shaft, the casing being provided with a water-inlet in its upper part and an outlet at its bottom, and partiallydivided by a horizoutal half-partition, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as The water-inlet leads into the uppermy own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. I
JOHN L. BATES.
