Description

2 I. KNNEY. PstOl-Re'st.
Patented Jan.- 27, 1880:.
WW? wa UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISRAEL KINNEY, or wINDsoR, ONTARIO, oANADA.
PISTO L- REST.
SPECIEICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 223,926, dated January 27, 1880.V
Application filed October 10, 1879.
T0 all 'whom it may ooncm'n Be it known that I, IsRAEL KINNEY, of Windsor, in the county of EsseX and Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented an improve ment in Pistol-Rests, of which the following is a specilication.
The nature of this invention relates to new and useful improvements in the construction of a pistol-rest, Whereloy a pistol may be tired from the shoulder-rest as a rille; and the invention consists in the construction of such a pistol-Test in the general form of a rifie or carbine, provided with sights at the usual distances apart, as is found in such rifles or carbines, and With an adj ustable c1amp,by lneans of wllich the pistol is secured to the rest, and provided with a gage, by means of which tlle range may be adjusted, substantially as hereinafter described.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my rest, with a pistol attached. Fig. 2 is a sectional perspective of the same, with pistol removed. Fi g. 3is a Vertical central cross-section through the rest and clamp. i
In the accompanying drawin gs, which form a part of this specification, A reprcsents a sham or wooden gun, provided with the rear sight, B, and front sight, O. The sight B is constructed substantially as shown in Fig.. 2, and consists of a notched plate with its lower end terminating in a circular or cylindrical' corresponding size, and both plates are secured to the rest by means of the screw Gr, which allows the plate F to be rotated, while the plate D is prevented from rotation by the spurs 'a projecting from its inner face into the wood of the rest.
The plate F is provided with graduated lines H, by means of which and the index E the range may he determined to suit varying distances. This plate is also provided with channeled studs I, rigidly secured in line with each other and with the central bolt, G. It is also provided with a slot, K, through which and the l'est A the bolt L passes, which bolt is adjustably secured in place by the Wing nut M against the washer N. The other end of this bolt terlninates in a hook, .0, which, When the pistol is in place, grasps the sides of the barrel thereof and forces it into engagement with the channeled studs I, as shown in Figs. 1 `and 3, Wherein P represent this pistol, the sides of the barrel of wllich are the parts brought into contact with the clamping device. The outer edge of this hook is provided Awith a groove, b, to allow the cartridges of the revolver to be readily witlldrawn without removing the pistol from the rest.
It will readily be seen that with a rest collstructed sllbstalltially as above described a pistol may he used with all the accuraoy of a rifle, and the revolver lnay be iired as many' times as it is provided with cartridges without being removed from the shoulder, which, if done, Would, as in a rifle, require a new sight and range to be obtained.
I do not desire to confine myself to the specific construction of the clalnp for securing the pistol in place, as desoribed, for clamps of other constructions may he used for the purpose.
What I claim as my invention is A shoulder-rest for revolvers o pistols, consisting of a: sham wooden gun having sights, in combination with a clalnping device collsist-ing of a fiXed and a rotary plate, constructed substantially as descrbcd, and secured to the side of such rest, and a bolt-c]amp, L, by
means of which a revolver or pistol is adjust-A ably attached to said rest, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
