Water heaters as heretofore generally manuihetured have comprised comparatively closely wound heating coils interposed in the path of the heating flame. Particularly with pot type 011 construction interferes with the natural flame pattern andcauses deposits of soot or carbon upon the burner structure and upon the colder, coil turns adjacent the burner. Coils so located also make it difficult to clean the coils or to reach the burner parts to disassemble the burner and clean it.
it is an object of the present invention to provide a new and improved oil burning hot water heater.
it is a further object to provide such a heater using a pot type burner with the heater parts so located as to maintain the natural flame pattern produced by the pot type burner,

The cross partition 24 is located in the lower portion 01' the drum ll, this partition supporting the pot type burner 25. This burner is provided with a pilot ring 2., a burner ring 21 and with primary air openings 28, together with secondary air openings 29. The burner itself is of usual construction and its details form no part of the present invention. The fuel pipe 30 leads from the fuel tank [3, flow through the pipe being controlled by the main valve operated by handle 1|. This pipe 30 leads to the constant level supply valve 32, the outlet pipe 33 of which is connected to the burner teed pipe- 34. This pipe 34 discharges into the pot burner adjacent its bottom in the usual manner.
The double water coil 35 is located within the drum l'l above the pot type burner and is connected to a lower intake fitting 38 as well as an outlet fitting 31. These fittings 36 and 31 extend through and are supported by the drum wall ll. It will be noted that the water heating coil 35 is located adjacent the drum wall I! and is 01' a greater diameter than the opening in the burner ring 21. It is also of greater diameter than the burner ring ll itself, so that that ring, as well as the pilot ring 26, may be removed upwardly through the heating coil. This removal can be accomplished through the opening normally covered by the cover plate 22. The heater is provided with the ofitake fine 38 which leads from the upper portion oi the drum and extends through the space 20. it will be noted that a part oi the upper portion of the heating coil 35 extends across the race oi the opening in order that the gases passing to the flue may pass directly over and between this section or the heating coils. The dead air space 20 between the heating drum H and housing it serves to reduce loss of heat and acts as insulation around the heating drum.
The entire assembly is simple and compact. and can be constructed commercially and is adapted for general use. Any periodic cleaning of the burner can be readily accomplished by removing the cover 22 and the rings 26 and 21. If required, the heating coils 35 and the interior of the drum can also be cleaned through this opening. The coil is not directly in the flame from the heater but is heated by radiant heat from the flame and from the products oi! combustion. With the coil located as shown, it is walls, which become hot also heated by the heat radiated from the drum upon continued operation of the apparatus. The placing of the coil out of the path of the flame itself serves to maintain the natural flame pattern produced by a pot type burner and insures efficient operation of the burner. The heating apparatus may be connected in,the usual wayto a. hot water tank and to the source of watensupply. The oiftake 38 (or products of combustion should be connected to a flue to supply draft suitable ior a pot type burner.
While I have shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, it is capable of change to meet dififering conditions and requirements, and I contemplate such modifications as come within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. In a water heater, a vertically extending heating drum, a pot type oil burner in the base of the drum, said burner having a top ring with a restricted central flame opening, a closed partition supporting the burner from the drum wall. a water heating coil located in the upper portion of the drum concentrically with the burner opening, the coil having a central opening greater in diameter than the burner top ring, and the drum having a removable upper portion whereby the burner ring may be removed through the coil for cleaning the burner.
2. In a water heater, a vertically extending heating drum, a housing surrounding the lateral walls of the drum and spaced therefrom, said housing being joined to the upper end of the drum, a removable cover for the drum, 8. closed partition in the lower portion of the drum, a pot type burner supported by said partition, said burner having a burner ring with a restricted central opening, and a heating coil fixedly secured in the drum above the partition, said coil having a central opening larger than the burner ring, whereby the burner ring may be removed upwardly through the coil for cleaning the burner.
